    Learning t say “yes, and”
When I first heard abut the imprvisatin (即兴交流) class, I was hesitating. As a quiet and shy girl, I feared imprvising in frnt f strangers. Hwever, I knew I wanted t wrk as a science cmmunicatr after finishing my Ph.D., s it seemed like a perfect chance t learn hw t speak and cmmunicate with thers effectively. I signed up, knwing the experience wuld give me help.
During ur first class, we learned an imprtant cncept f imprvisatin: “yes, and.” It means that, as imprvisers, we’d better accept what fellw perfrmers say. If smene says that rhins (犀牛) are librarians, fr example, then rhins are librarians. We d nt questin the lgic; we say “yes” and then cntinue with the scene as if nthing is wrng.
The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned int mnths, I became mre cmfrtable and even started t enjy ur classes. I became better at listening, relating t my cnversatin partners, and cmmunicating clearly in the mment. Once when I was giving a presentatin abut my science, an audience member surprised me with a questin that didn’t grw ut f the infrmatin I’d presented. Instead f getting cnfused and nervus, I tk the “yes, and” apprach—accepting the questin and letting my mind fcus n why it was asked. That helped me find an apprpriate answer. I gt pretty excited abut it.
The benefits f imprvisatin g beynd cmmunicatin. Befre attending the class, I wuld get stuck when my experiments prduced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But nw, instead f getting discuraged, I will stay pen t the pssibility that the results are real, keep explring the data and end up identifying a new type f cell—ne that isn’t behaving as expected.
I think all scientists can benefit frm this lessn. If the data say rhins are librarians, then it’s wrth finding ut whether rhins are, in fact, librarians. As scientists, ur jb isn’t t challenge data that supprt, a precnceived stry, but t say “yes, and.”
    4. Why did the authr attend the imprvisatin class?
    A. T get a different experience.
    B. T finish her Ph.D. at university.
    C. T give up her jb as a science cmmunicatr.
    D. T imprve her speaking and cmmunicating ability.
    5. What was the authr’s change after attending the imprvisatin class?
    A. She frmed her wn idea quickly.
B She came up with lts f creative respnses.
    C. She paid mre attentin t the lgic f answers.
    D. She became a gd listener befre giving an pinin.
    6. The authr mentins applying the “yes, and” apprach t her scientific experiments t ________.
    A. explain the prcess f using the methd
    B. prve the benefits f the imprvisatin class
    C. share her wn research experiences with readers
    D. attract fellw scientists t attend the imprvisatin class
    7. What can be inferred abut scientists frm the last paragraph?
    A. They shuld attend the imprvisatin class.
    B. They shuld questin all precnceived ideas.
    C. They shuld carry n research by admitting earlier data.
    D. They shuld try t imprve their academic knwledge.
    【答案】4. D 5. D 6. B 7. C

When yu are stuck n a prblem, smetimes it is best t stp thinking abut it — cnsciusly, anyway. Research has shwn that taking a break r a nap can help the brain create pathways t a slutin. Nw a new study expands n the effect by using sund cues (提示) t fcus the sleeping mind n a targeted prblem.
When humans sleep, parts f the brain replay certain memries, strengthening and transfrming them. Abut a decade ag researchers develped a technique, called targeted memry reactivatin (TMR), aimed at further reinfrcing selected memries: when a sund becmes assciated with a memry and is later played during sleep, that memry gets reactivated. In a study published last Nvember in Psychlgical Science, scientists tested whether revisiting the memry f a puzzle during sleep might als imprve prblem-slving.
Abut 60 participants visited the labratry befre and after a night f sleep. In an evening sessin, they attempted spatial, verbal and cnceptual puzzles, with a distinct music clip repeating in the backgrund fr each, until they wrked n six puzzles they culd nt slve. Overnight they wre electrdes t detect slw-wave sleep and a device played the sunds assigned t three f the six unslved puzzles. The next day, back at the lab, the participants attempted the six puzzles again. All tld, the subjects slved 32 percent f the sund-prmpted puzzles versus 21 percent f the untargeted puzzles — a bst f mre than 50 percent.
The researchers “very bravely went fr quite cmplex tasks that invlved a lt f cmplex prcessing, and remarkably they fund these really strng effects in all f their tasks,” says Penny Lewis, a psychlgist at Cardiff University. “These are supercl results. Nw we need t g ut and try t understand them by firstly repeating the tasks and secndly trying t wrk ut the cmpnent prcesses that are actually being influenced.”
Beynd prviding new evidence that humans restructure memries while sleeping, the research may have practical implicatins. “In a futuristic wrld, maybe TMR culd help us use sleep t wrk n ur prblems,” says lead authr Kristin Sanders, wh was a graduate student at Nrthwestern University during the study. Sleep-mnitring technlgy is increasingly accessible — and even withut gadgets (小装置), prspective slvers can fcus n imprtant prblems befre bed.
Still, sleep is nt magic; peple need t d their hmewrk and lad their heads with the puzzle pieces invlved. “I’m nt ging t slve cancer with this technique,” Sanders says, “because I dn’t knw anything abut cancer research.”
    8. What is the functin f sund cues in the new study?
    A. T help the brain create pathways t a slutin.
    B. T direct the sleeping mind twards specific prblems.
    C. T mnitr slw-wave sleep and detect reactivated memry.
    D. T prvide backgrund music fr participants attempting puzzles.
    9. What des the underlined wrd “them” in Paragraph 4 refer t?
    A. The cmplex tasks.B. The strng effects.

Mst f us dn’t have any memries frm the first three t fur year f ur lives. And when we d try t think back t ur earliest memries, it is ften unclear whether they are the real thing r just recllectins based n phts r stries tld t us. The phenmenn, knwn as “childhd amnesia,” bas been puzzling psychlgists fr mre than a century.
It may seem that the reasn we dn’t remember being babies is that babies dn’t have a fully develped memry. But babies as yung as six mnths can frm bth shrt-term and lng-term memries. In ne study, six- mnth-lds wh learned hw t press a lever t perate a ty.
Of curse, memry capabilities at these ages are nt adult-like — they cntinue t develp until adlescence. In fact, develpmental changes in basic memry prcesses have been put frward as an explanatin fr childhd amnesia, and it’s ne f the best theries we’ve gt s far. These basic prcesses invlve several brain regins and include frming, maintaining and later bringing back the memry.
But this des nt seem t be the whle stry. Anther factr that we knw plays a rle is language. Frm the ages f ne t six, children prgress frm the ne wrd stage f speaking t becming fluent in their native language(s), s there are majr changes in their language cmpetence that verlap with the childhd amnesia perid. It is true t sme extent that a child’s ability t describe an event predicts hw well they remember it mnths r years later.
While there are still things we dn’t understand abut childhd amnesia, it’s imprtant t remember that, even if we can’t clearly remember specific events frm when we were very yung, they still influence ur behavir. The first few years f life are frgettable and yet pwerful in shaping the adults that we becme.

    B. Babies’ language skills need develping.
    C. Babies cannt g thrugh basic memry prcesses.
    D. Babies rarely experience events that had a big impact.
14 What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
    A. Specific events frm early childhd shuld be tld t children.
    B. The first few years f life shuld be taken seriusly.
    C. We can vercme childhd amnesia smeday.
    D. Childhd amnesia is fairly cmmn.
