On a windy day, 40 middle- schl students stand by the Harlem River in New Yrk City. Their teacher, Mr. White, pulls a metal cage ut f the river. Inside are clusters f ysters(牡蛎). The last time they were here, the ysters were babies.
The students’ jb is t measure hw much the ysters have grwn and test the river water fr pllutants. They will reprt their findings t researchers at the Billin Oyster Prject (BOP). Why wrk s hard? T make the city’s waterways healthy again.
Oysters are imprtant fr the underwater cmmunity they share with plants, fish, and ther life. S they are als called a keystne species. If a keystne species disappears, ther plants and animals may die ut. That’s exactly what happened 100 years ag in New Yrk Harbr. Befre then, lts f ysters lived here. The ysters were delicius— maybe t delicius. By the early 1900s, peple were eating them faster than they culd grw.
The ysters were in truble fr anther reasn. Pllutin was puring int the waters f the grwing city, and few types f animals culd live in it. Since the 1970s, new laws have helped reduce txic(有毒的) waste. Sme fish started t swim thrugh again. But ysters were still missing— until recently. The BOP began in 2014 t help bring ysters back t New Yrk Harbr. S far, students and vlunteers have placed abut 25,000,000 ysters int the harbr.
“The ysters definitely lk much bigger nw,” says a student named Kelly. Taking turns, the kids measure all the ysters, then cmpare ntes. The biggest yster is ver 2 inches lng, much bigger than a healthy size fr its age.
As mre ysters grw, the water shuld becme clearer. Als, ther animals shuld mve in. Finally, the students put the ysters back in the cage. Mr. White lwers it int the river. When the ysters are big enugh, they will be mved t the middle f the harbr. Fr tday, everyne agrees: the future is lking bright fr New Yrk Harbr.

Traditinal micr- rbts ften face limitatins due t their pwer surces, but recently develped insect- sized rbt pwered by tiny explsins has demnstrated the ability t climb, jump, and carry lads many times its wn weight.
The rbt, mainly develped by materials engineer Rbert Shepherd at Crnell University in New Yrk, alng with his PhD student Camern Aubin, is pwered by tiny actuatrs(致动器).“The actuatr lks like a clumn. It’s an empty cylinder with a stretchy rubber n the tp,” said Aubin.
The researchers emplyed fur actuatrs t drive the rbt’s feet. T make the rbt jump r climb, a stream f methane (甲烷) and xygen was fed int each ft and sparked (触发) with electricity frm a battery. The resulting reactin between the gases release d energy as a small explsin, causing the rubber t change its frm.
Shepherd nted that the rapid explsins were s tiny that they didn’t damage the rubber. But they prvided cnsiderable prpulsin: the rbt culd jump t a height f 56 centimeters and carry a lad 22 times its wn weight.
“This team has brught chemically pwered actuatin t impressive ranges fr rbtics while als demnstrating impressive capabilities fr insect- size machines,” said Ryan Truby, a materials scientist at Nrthwestern University in Illinis.
Rbts that are small and light but strng and able t cver large distances culd ne day be used in envirnmental mnitring r search- and- rescue applicatins. And the rbt built by Aubin and Shepherd, described in a paper published in Science, wuld need further develpment fr use in the field.“ At the mment, it needs t be cnnected t a panel that cntains the gas supply and a battery, a limitatin that presents a challenge. Cming up with ways t burn fuels n a wireless rbt is nt easy,” said Truby. “This is the next big challenge t address.”
8.Why des the recently develped insect- sized rbt stand ut?
A.It is extremely tiny and light.B.It is equipped with a clumn.
C.It is extremely swift and quick.D.It is driven by explsive frce.
9.What happens when the methane and xygen is sparked?
A.The reactin creates a mixture f gas t drive the rbt.
B.The reactin generates heat that is changed int mvement.
C.The reactin transfrms a stretchy rubber t drive the rbt.
D.The reactin prvides electricity that is changed int mvement.
10.What des “prpulsin” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A.Ability t mve.B.Pssibility t develp.
C.Frce t push things.D.Electricity t spark gases.
11.Hw can Aubin and Shepherd make advancement t the rbt they built?
A.They can use mre actuatrs t prvide larger pwer.
B.They can design prgrams t cntrl the rbt efficiently.
C.They can wrk n methds t t enable energy prductin wirelessly.
D.They can cnnect the rbt t a panel cntaining gas supply and a battery.

Researchers at the Ptsdam Institute fr Climate Impact Research analyzed histrical fd prices acrss varius fd categries and cuntries glbally, lking at the impact f climatic changes n fd inflatin (通货膨胀) and the ptential implicatins f future climate change. They fund that annual fd inflatin will rise by 3.2 percent per year and verall inflatin by1.18 percent per year by 2035. And all natins will be impacted, while ht regins and summers will see the mst significant cnsequences.
“ Lking at ver 27,000 bservatins f histrical data, we fund that increases in temperatures can increase fd prices, particularly in ht regins and seasns,” said Max Ktz, a c- authr f the study,“ Under future climate cnditins, these impacts culd becme large, threatening the price stability cmmands f central banks, such as the ECB ( Eurpean Central Bank), which aims t keep inflatin belw 2 percent.”
The reprt highlighted hw rising r unstable prices endanger human welfare and ecnmic and plitical stability, pinting t United Natins data shwing that the cst- f- living crisis in2021/22 resulted in 71 millin mre peple falling int pverty glbally. The study fund that increases in temperatures, particularly in ht regins and during summers, lead t heightened inflatin levels, which are mre prnunced in lwer latitudes (纬度) like Africa and Suth America. Regins at higher latitudes experience seasnal peaks, mstly in the summer mnths.
Data shwed a 1℃ rise in average mnthly temperatures affects prices fr nearly a year, similarly t extra rainfall. Hwever, price impacts resulting frm extreme drught are nly temprary. Researchers examined the extremely ht Eurpean summer f 2022, when heat and drught had far- reaching effects n agriculture and the ecnmy. “We estimate that the 2022 summer heat extreme increased fd inflatin in Eurpe by abut 0.6 percent,” said Ktz.
Researchers claimed that future warming prjected fr 2035 wuld multiply the impacts f such extremes by up t 50 percent. These effects are particularly relevant fr currency unins with a 2 percent inflatin target, such as the Eurzne, and will cntinue t increase with future glbal warming.
12.What is the first paragraph mainly abut?
A.Natural cnsequences f climate change.B.The link between fd price s and climate.
C.Fd prices in ht regins during summers.D.The impact f fd inflatin n fd prices.
13.What might the rising prices lead t accrding t the researchers’ reprt?
A.Massive pverty.B.Human welfare.
C.Envirnmental crisis.D.Ecnmic stability.
14.Why is the Eurpean summer f 2022 mentined in paragraph 4?
A.T give an example f the research findings.B.T prvide reasns fr the researchers’ dubt.
C.T shw practical significance f the research.D.T state researchers’ methds fr data analysis.
15.What is the researchers’ attitude tward fd inflatin?
