As night fell n the first day f the semester, I knew I shuld g t bed. Instead, I pened my laptp t revisit a difficult research prblem that had been taking up my attentin ther tasks piled up. Smething wasn't adding up in a vital data set, and I was under pressure t figure it ut as quickly as pssible. If I culd just make a little headway befre bed, I was sure I wuld sleep better and awake ready t tackle all thse ther tasks— lectures t plish, grants t write, emails t send. But it was nt t be. My wrk was rushed and fruitless, and by the time I gave up, I had lst all but 3 hurs f sleep. As a new assistant prfessr, I figured nights like this were just part f the jb. But I’ve since learned that busy perids dn't have t spin ut f cntrl.
S I decided t establish a scheduled reset fr wrk. Every Saturday night thrugh Mnday mrning, I wuld shut ff all email ntificatins t my phne and strive t keep my laptp shut. I knew it wasn't much, but I thught the nce-a- week cmmitment wuld be a pssible starting pint. Almst instantly, my Saturday night f disabling email ntificatins became a weekly highlight. I was able t keep my head clearer and mre present n Sundays, which allwed me t enjy time with family and engage with persnal interests that nurtured(滋长) the nnwrk parts f my identity. On Mndays, I fund myself returning t the ffice with a sense f liveliness. The quality f my wrk imprved during the day, giving me freedm t decide whether I wanted t cntinue with anything in the evening.
There were setbacks. Even tday, there are times when I give wrk t much f my attentin. But the weekly reset gives me a way t regain my balance quicker than I therwise wuld.
