Are peple in sme cuntries mre generally dishnest than peple in ther cuntries? An internatinal team f researchers have examined this questin.
In 2015, David Pascual- Ezama at Universidad Cmplutense Madrid and his clleagues investigated dishnesty in 16 different cuntries. They recruited 90 university students in each cuntry t play a cin- flipping (抛硬币) game.
The game cnsisted f a single flip f a cin with a black and a white side. If the cin landed with the white side up, the student received a bar f chclate as a prize. Each student flipped the cin in private and then reprted the result t an experimenter. The experimenter didn't knw if a particular student reprted the result truthfully r nt. But—— and here's the clever part—— the experimenter culd accurately estimate the level f cheating in the grup as a whle by simply cunting the ttal number f chclates handed ut as prizes. If 90 students flip a cin, accrding t the laws f prbability, abut half f the cins will land n white and receive a prize. If almst all f the students reprt a prize- winning result, then we have evidence f a high level f cheating in that grup.
Smewhat surprisingly, Pascual- Ezama and his team fund that, acrss all 16 cuntries, nly57% f the students reprted the white—— just 7 percentage pints higher than what we wuld expect if everyne tld the truth. Amng thse students wh wuld have been templed (引诱) t lie because their cin landed n black, 86% f them resisted the temptatin and tld the truth. Sme f the 16 cuntries cheated a little mre and sme a little less, but the differences were nt statistically significant.
Accrding t the researchers, the results f the study prvide supprt fr the thery f self- cncept maintenance—— we' re mtivated by external incentives (激励) t cheat, but we' re als mtivated by an internal desire t see urselves as a gd, decent, mral persn. A lw level f dishnesty ( s- called“ incmplete cheating”) is the result f ur attempt t find a happy medium between external incentives t act dishnestly and ur wn internal desire t be a mral persn.
    28. Why did the researchers carry ut the study?
    A. T discver the secret f being hnest.
    B. T highlight the significance f mral cde.
    C. T calculate the hnest ppulatin in 16 cuntries.
    D. T test participants' dishnesty in different cuntries.

Researchers mnitring the lightless landscape f the Pacific Ocean flr think they' ve bserved“ dark xygen” being created there, ptentially challenging cmmnly held beliefs abut hw xygen is prduced n Earth.
Until nw, it was thught that xygen was created nly thrugh phtsynthesis (光合作用), a prcess that requires sunlight. But the discvery casts dubt n that thery and raises new questins abut the rigins f life itself.
The research team led by Sweetman, a prfessr with the Scttish Assciatin fr Marine Science in Oban, Sctland, published its findings Mnday in an article in the jurnal Nature Gescience.
The scientists aren't certain hw xygen is created at such dark depths, but they believe it's being prduced by electrically charged minerals called plymetallic ndules These ndules——“ effectively batteries in a rck,” Sweetman said—— may use their electric charge t split seawater int hydrgen and xygen in a prcess called seawater electrlysis (电解).
Plymetallic ndules cntain metals such as manganese, nickel and cbalt, which can be used t make the batteries used in cnsumer electrnics , appliances and electric vehicles. Franz Geiger, a Nrthwestern University chemistry prfessr wh wrked n the study, said in a separate news release that there may be enugh plymetallic ndules in an area f the Pacific Ocean called the Clarin- Clippertn Zne t meet glbal energy demands fr decades after.
But Geiger als said that mining wuld have t be cnducted in a way that did nt remve xygen fr life frms in that part f the cean. Cmpanies cnducted explratry missins fr deep- sea mining in the 1970s and 80s, he said, and recent research suggests that thse missins may have had influences n marine life in the area fr decades.“A few years ag, a team f marine bilgists went back t thse areas that were mined 40 years ag and fund essentially n life,” Geiger said.“ And then a few hundred meters ver t the left and right, where the ndules were undamaged, plenty f life.”
    32. What d we knw abut the new research?
    A. It questins whether xygen exists in seawater.
    B. It believes that the level f xygen is higher in the deep sea.
    C. It challenges the cnventinal view f hw xygen is prduced.
    D. It argues that xygen is created nly thrugh phtsynthesis.
    33. What generates the xygen under the sea accrding t the scientists?
    A. Hydrgen and seawater. B. Special rcks n the sea flr.
    C. A kind f effective batteries. D. Marine plants and sunlight.
34. Why did Geiger mentin the deep- sea mining in the 1970s and 80s?
    A. T emphasize the need t cnsult bilgists befre mining.
    B. T call fr mre firms t learn frm previus explratry achievements.
    C. T remind the cmpanies t avid damaging the ndules when mining.
    D. T encurage the bilgists t mnitr deep- sea life cntinuusly.

C.“ Plymetallic Ndules” Have Changed Underse a Landscape

N matter what the situatin is, there is an ppsite, a benefit.
Are peple in sme cuntries mre generally dishnest than peple in ther cuntries?
I f 90 students flip a cin, accrding t the laws f prbability, abut half f the cins will land n white and receive a prize. If almst all f the students reprt a prize- winning result, then we have evidence f a high level f cheating in that grup.
Smewhat surprisingly, Pascual- Ezama and his team fund that, acrss all 16 cuntries, nly 57% f the students reprted the white— just 7 percentage pints higher than what we wuld expect if everyne tld the truth.

    41-45 CCABD 46-50 AACBD 51-55 BDBDC
    41. C 根据下文 she is fluent in Mandarin, fnd f hanfu and Chinese dance 可知,这里指 Urbnya有令人意外的惊喜。
achieve a dream 实现梦想。
In an effrt t
    65. were implemented
