This little Suth American Magellanic penguin swims 5,000 miles, t a beach in Brazil, every year in rder t be reunited with the man wh saved its life. It sunds like smething ut f a fairy tale, but it’s true!
71-year-ld retired brick wrker Ja, wh lives in an island village just utside Ri de Janeir, Brazil, fund the small Magellanic penguin lying n rcks at his lcal beach in 2011. The penguin was cvered in il and running ut f time fast. Ja rescued the penguin, naming it Din, cleaned the il ff its feathers and fed him a daily diet f fish t rebuild its strength. After a week f recvery, Ja attempted t release the penguin back int the wild. Hwever, Din had already frmed a family bnd with his rescuer and wuldn’t leave.
“He stayed with me fr 11 mnths and then, just after he changed his cat with new feathers, he disappeared,” Ja recalls. “I lve the penguin like it’s my wn child and I believe the penguin lves me,” Ja tld Glb TV. “N ne else is allwed t tuch him. He pecks (啄) them if they d. He lies n my lap, lets me give him shwers, and allws me t feed him.”
Prfessr Krajewski, a bilgist wh interviewed the fisherman fr Glb TV, tld The Independent: “I have never seen anything like this befre. I think the penguin believes Ja is part f his family and prbably a penguin as well.”
Hwever, envirnmentalists warn that, while hundreds f the Magellanic species are knwn t naturally migrate (迁徙) thusands f miles nrth in search f fd, there has been a wrrying rise in the phenmenn f ceanic creatures washing up n Brazil’s beaches. Prfessr David Zee frm Ri de Janeir’s State University, said the increase is due in part t glbal climatic changes. Prfessr Zee added that sea animals face increased danger frm leaked tanker il.
Luckily the ending fr Ja and Din has been a happy ne, even thugh it is illegal in Brazil t keep wild animals as pets.
Prfessr Krajewski said: “Prfessinals wh wrk with animals try t avid relatinships like this ccurring s they are able t reintrduce the animal int the wild. But in this single case the authrities allwed Din t stay with Ja because f his kindness.”
    24. Every year Din swims a lng distance t a beach in Brazil t ______.
    A. avid being killedB. meet his rescuer
    C. escape frm cean currentsD. find much mre fish
    25. When Din was fund in 2011 ______.
    A. he was dyingB. he was running n the beach
    C. he was resting n a rckD. he was cleaning il ff his feathers
26 What can we learn abut Ja frm the passage?
    A. He is nt allwed t keep the penguin as a pet by the authrities.
    B. He verprtects the penguin by keeping him away frm thers.
    C. His cntact with the penguin is encuraged by prfessinals.

What des it mean t live a gd life? This questin has been debated fr centuries. In the field f psychlgy, tw main cncepts f the gd life have been quite ppular: A happy life full f pleasure and psitive emtins, and a meaningful life full f purpse and sacrifice. But what if these aren’t the nly ptins?
In recent years, a lng-neglected versin f the gd life has been receiving greater attentin: the psychlgically rich life. It is full f cmplex mental engagement, a wide range f intense and deep emtins, and diverse, nvel, surprising and interesting experiences. Smetimes they are neither pleasant nr meaningful. Hwever, they are rarely bring r mntnus.
After all, bth happy and meaningful lives can becme mntnus and repetitive. A persn with a steady ffice jb, married with children, may be satisfied and find his r her life meaningful and still be bred. Als, the psychlgically rich life desn’t necessarily invlve ecnmic richness. Fr instance, cnsider Hesse’s character Gldmund, wh has n mney but pursues the life f a free spirit.
Research has fund psychlgical richness is related t, but partially distinct frm, bth happy and meaningful lives. Psychlgical richness is related with penness t experience and experiencing bth psitive and negative emtins mre intensely. But is the psychlgically rich life ne that peple actually want?
In a new study, Qishi and his clleagues asked peple in nine cuntries the degree t which they value a psychlgically rich life, a happy life and a meaningful life. They fund many peple’s self-described ideal lives invlve psychlgical richness. When frced t chse a life, hwever, the majrity chse a happy life and a meaningful life. Even s, a minrity f peple still favred the psychlgically rich life, ranging frm 6.7% in Singapre t 16.8% in Germany.
These numbers went up when the desire fr a psychlgically rich life was measured indirectly. T understand what a persn wishes their lives might have been, it is imprtant t explre what peple wish they had avided in their lives. When asked what they regret mst and whether unding this event wuld have made their lives happier, mre meaningful r psychlgically richer, abut 28% f Americans said unding the regrettable event wuld have made their lives psychlgically richer.
These findings suggest that while mst peple strive t be happy and have meaning in their lives, a sizable number f peple are cntent merely living a psychlgically rich existence.
As Oishi and his clleagues cnclude, “We believe that taking the psychlgically rich life seriusly will deepen and enrich ur understanding f well-being.” At the end f the day, there is n ne singularly acceptable path t the gd life. Yu have t find a path that wrks best fr yu.
    28. What des Oishi’s research indicate?
    A. The Germans prefer psychlgical richness t a happy life.
    B. Unding regrettable events has enriched many peple’s lives.
    C. A hidden desire fr psychlgical richness exists amng sme peple.
    D. Peple with psychlgical richness tend t describe their lives as ideal.
    29. We can learn frm the passage that ________.
    A. purpse utweighs pleasure in terms f significance
    B. the chice f a gd life differs frm persn t persn
    C. a psitive mindset helps us understand ur well-being
    D. we shuld never be cntent and always strive fr the best
    30. What is the main purpse f the article?
    A T cmpare different cncepts f a gd life.
    B. T explain hw t live a psychlgically rich life.
    C. T persuade peple t attain psychlgical richness.
    D. T draw attentin t a less familiar versin f a gd life.
    D
Scientists ften cmplain that peple are nt ratinal (理性的) in their ppsitin t technlgies such as nuclear pwer and genetically mdified (GM) crps. Frm a statistical perspective, these are very safe, and s pepled fear can be explained nly by emtin, strengthened by ignrance. Electricity frm nuclear pwer has led t far fewer direct deaths than has calfired pwer, yet many peple are afraid f it, and hardly anyne is afraid f cal plants. Similar arguments can be made abut GM crps, which studies have shwn are generally safe fr mst peple t eat.
Scientific illiteracy (无知) may be part f the prblem. Mst f us are afraid f things we dn’t understand, and studies have shwn that scientists tend t be mre accepting f ptentially risky technlgies than laypeple. This suggests that when peple knw a lt abut such technlgies, they are usually reassured.
But there’s mre t the issue than meets the eye. It is true that many f us fear the unknwn, but it is als true that we dn’t care enugh abut rutine risks. Part f the explanatin is cmplacency: we tend nt t fear the familiar, and thus familiarity can lead us t underestimate risk. The investigatin int the Deepwater Hrizn blwut and il spill (原油泄漏) in 2010 shwed that cmplacency—amng executives, amng engineers and amng gvernment fficials-was a majr cause f that disaster. S the fact that experts are unwrried abut a threat is nt necessarily reassuring.
Scientists als make a mistake when they assume that public cncerns are whlly r even mstly abut safety. Sme peple bject t GM crps because these crps facilitate the increased use f chemicals. Others have a prblem with the scial impacts that switching t GM rganisms can have n traditinal farming cmmunities r with the plitical implicatins f leaving a large share f the fd supply in the hands f a few crpratins.
Geengineering (地球工程学) t lessen the impacts f climate change is anther example. Laypeple as well as scientists are mre cncerned abut versight (监管) than safety. Wh will decide whether this is a gd way t deal with climate change? If we undertake the prject f setting the glbal temperature by cntrlling hw much sunlight reaches Earth’s surface, wh will be included in that “we” and by what prcess will the “right” glbal temperature be chsen?
Can we say which grup’s view is clser t an accurate assessment?
    31. The underlined wrd “cmplacency” in Paragraph 3 prbably means ________.
    A. vercnfidenceB. predictin
    C. underestimatinD. carelessness
    32. The example f geengineering is used t argue that ________.
    A. safety is nt the whle cncern f the public
    B. geengineering is highly recgnized by scientists
    C. the public are unnecessarily trubled by climate change
    D. lessening the impacts f climate change is a great challenge
    33. What can we learn frm the passage?
    A. Scientific illiteracy is a majr cause f disasters.
    B. The safety f technlgies can be accurately assessed.
    C. Scientists misjudge peple’s ppsitin t technlgies.
    D. Peple are unwrried abut risks with prper versight.
    34. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    A. Ignrance r Safety
    B. Wh Is Ratinal Abut Risk
    C. Why Can’t Peple Trust Technlgy
    D. Shuld Scientists Have a Say in Risk

Pr Sleep and Lneliness: A Vicius Cycle?
The feeling f being lnely is the sense that yu have less scial cntact with thers than yu want. It is nt quite the same as the amunt f scial cntact yu have. Sme peple dn’t engage that ften with thers, but they are perfectly fine with that, and s they dn’t feel alne. ____35____ Being lnely is assciated with prer psychlgical health.
One area f research has fcused specifically n the relatinship between lneliness and sleep. There are several inter-related questins: Is feeling lnely related t the quality f peple’s sleep? What aspects f sleep are related t lneliness? And des lneliness cause sleep prblems, r d difficulties with sleeping lead t feelings f lneliness? ___36___
The relatinship between lneliness and sleep was explred in a paper by Melanie Hm and Cal Chu in the September 2020 issue f Clinical Psychlgical Science. They analyzed the data f previus studies relating sleep quality t feelings f lneliness. ____37____ This relatinship is strnger fr insmnia (失眠症) than fr sleep cmplaints like nightmares. In additin, the mre lneliness peple express, the less effective they think their sleep is.
Althugh pr sleep and lneliness are clsely related, it is hard t determine whether lneliness causes sleep difficulties r the reverse (相反).
___38___ It is because yu can lk t see whether sleep difficulties at ne time predict later feelings f lneliness r whether lneliness early n predicts later sleep difficulties. Interestingly, sleep prblems predicted later lneliness and lneliness predicted later sleep difficulties. Hwever, the cnnectin between earlier sleep difficulties and later lneliness was generally strnger than that between earlier lneliness and later sleep difficulties. This pattern suggests that there may be a vicius cycle, thugh, in which pr sleep can increase feelings f lneliness, which can in turn increase sleep difficulties.
If yu are smene wh has truble sleeping, be aware that pr sleep lwers yur resilience (复原力) verall. Amng ther things, it may make it harder fr yu t appreciate the scial cntacts yu have. ____39____ That added scial engagement just might have a psitive impact n yur future sleep.
    A. Lng-term studies that fllw the same peple ver time help.
    B. If yu have difficulty in scial engagement yu may feel lnely.
    C. Other peple may spend a lt f time with thers, but still lng fr mre.
    D. These issues are imprtant because pr sleep can affect psychlgical health.
    E. T slve the prblem, yu shuld mnitr yur sleeping quality and physical health.
    F. If yu have truble sleeping, try spending mre time reaching ut t friends and lved nes.
    G. The results indicate that the mre sleep difficulties peple express they have, the lnelier they feel.

    阅读下面短文,根据题目要求回答问题。
    Digital Inclusin fr Older Adults
As a researcher in the behavir f lder adults, I regularly hear cmplaints frm them like, “I’m just nt part f this wrld anymre. In certain parts f sciety, I just can’t jin… Sme things just are nt pssible if yu are nt in the flw f the Internet.” r “We feel like we’re standing utside a building that we have n access t.”
Tday, mastering digital technlgy has becme a key cmpnent f what it means t fully participate in sciety. But ne area in particular threatens t prevent sme lder adults frm making cnnectins: the digital divide.
As a recent study shws, ne-third f adults aged 65 and lder say they’ve never used the Internet, and half dn’t have Internet access at hme. Of thse wh d use the Internet, nearly half say they need smene else’s help t set up r use a new digital device.
In cntrast t cncerns abut technlgy use increasing islatin(孤立;隔离) amng yunger ppulatins, the cmmunicatin and cnnectin pssible nline can be especially valuable fr lder adults wh are hmebund, live far away frm family, r have lst the lved nes. Older adults can use nline tls t cnnect with friends and family via messaging platfrms, vide chat, and scial media even if they can n lnger physically visit them. And they can engage with the utside wrld thrugh news, blgs, streaming platfrms, and email, even if they are n lnger able t mve abut as easily as they nce culd.
Fr lder adults in particular, the risks assciated with scial islatin are prfund. Lneliness amng lder adults has been assciated with depressin, functinal decline, and death. Technlgy can serve as an imprtant tl t help reduce these risks, but nly if we prvide lder adults with the skills they need, t make inclusin in the digital wrld accessible t them.
The imprtance f digital inclusin is nt ging t disappear with the generatinal changes f the cming decades. Technlgy is cntinuusly develping, and with each new digital innvatin cme challenges fr even yunger adults t adapt.
    40. What prevents sme lder adults frm cnnecting with sciety?
    41. What d the statistics in Paragraph 3 indicate?
    42. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
●Enabling lder adults t access the digital wrld can help them recver frm depressin and functinal decline.
    43. Please briefly present yur pinin n digital inclusin. (abut 40 wrds)
