Melissa Wlf’s clients cme in all shapes and sizes. Sme have tw legs, and sme have fur. All f them need a secnd chance.
Wlf is the funder f UnChained, a nnprfit rganizatin in nrthern Califrnia that pairs vulnerable yung peple with abandned r abused dgs that have been rescued frm shelters. The yuth learn t train the dgs in basic skills and better prepare them fr adptin.
UnChained, funded in 2011, was brn frm Wlf’s wn passin and persnal experiences. When she was in her early 20s and wrking fr a nnprfit in Texas, she was shcked by the animal neglect(忽视)she witnessed in sme areas.
“Our kids ften share very similar stries t the dgs, and we bring that int ur classes. Many f ur kids have experienced risk factrs that have led them t the lives where they are,” Wlf said. “They experience jy, anger, fear and lneliness. When yung peple in ur prgram can understand that they may share a similar stry with a dg in need, and help that dg n a path t success, it can transfrm hw they see themselves and their future.”
The prgram fsters empathy, cmpassin, and respnsibility as students train and build trust with their designated(认定的)dg. At the end f the eight weeks, there is a graduatin ceremny where adpters, parents, and teachers gather t celebrate the yung peple and dgs alike. And students get t shw guests what they’ve taught their dgs.

“There is a lighting up f thse children’s eyes and faces, and we start t see the magic that happens and ur kids’ understanding that dgs experience feelings very similar t humans,” Wlf said.

The latest study investigated hw eating behavirs change when cnsumers are served a dip(调味酱)with a salty snack. The findings suggest that they eat mre—a lt mre. The chips and dip tgether led t a 77% greater calric intake, and a faster ttal eating rate cmpared t the just chips, n- dip cntrl.
“The mst striking findings f ur study is that peple didn’t eat fewer chips when dip was available— they ate the same amunt f chips, plus the dip,” pinted ut study authr Jhn Hayes, prfessr f fd science and directr f PSSEC.“This lack f cmpensatin means that adding dip t chips can substantially increase verall energy intake withut peple realizing it.”
The study assessed 46 adult participants. In tw visits t the Sensry Evaluatin Center, they were served 70 grams f ranch- flavred chips, r abut 2.5servings, with r withut abut a third f a cup f ranch dip. Participants ate as much as they wanted. Their intake was measured, and all eating sessins were vide recrded and anntated fr the number f bites and active eating time. Researchers used that infrmatin t calculate measures f “eating micrstructure”, including eating rate and bite size.
Hayes suggested that the greater intake f the chips and dip snack was facilitated by a larger bite size resulting frm dip inclusin. On average per eating sessin, participants cnsumed 345calries f chips and dip cmpared t 195calries f chips alne.
“This research pens up new avenues fr explring hw the physical prperties f fds can influence ur eating behavirs and ultimately, ur energy intake,” he said. “If we can slw peple dwn, we can influence energy cnsumptin withut giving up the pleasure frm fd.”

In a new study in the jurnal Frntiers in Eclgy and Evlutin, researchers and cmmunity scientists mnitred urban milkweed plants fr butterfly eggs t learn what makes these city gardens mre hspitable t mnarchs. They fund that even tiny city gardens attracted mnarchs and became a hme t caterpillars.
Mnarch butterflies have ne f the mst unusual and demanding migratin patterns f any insect. The eastern ppulatin f mnarchs starts the year in Mexic, and they mve up acrss Nrth America in the spring and summer.
“As they travel, they lay their eggs, and when thse adults die, the next generatin cntinues the migratin nrthward. They will make it all the way t suthern Canada, and at the end f summer, a new super generatin is brn that migrates all the way suth and survives thrugh the winter. Since it takes multiple generatins f milkweed- eating caterpillars t get the mnarch ppulatin frm Mexic t Canada each year, the mnarchs rely n milkweed plants thrughut their migratin path,” says Klinger, the study’s lead authr and a Gegraphic Infrmatin Systems analyst in the Keller Science Actin Center.
Klinger and his clleague wrked with vlunteers arund Chicagland t mnitr milkweed plants in their yards and neighbrhds fr mnarch butterflies laying their eggs n the plants and caterpillars eating the milkweed leaves.
“We wanted t answer the questin: Hw well d these urban milkweed gardens actually supprt mnarch butterflies? Everybdy always wants t knw: What shuld we plant?
