Saihanba is a frest park in the nrth f Hebei. It is abut 400 km frm Beijing. Fr hundreds f years, the emperrs went there t hunt. But in the 1800s, things began t change. There were frest fires and wars, and peple cut dwn many trees. Saihanba slwly turned int a desert.
Saihanba: turning desert int frest
When the frest disappeared, there were terrible sandstrms in the Beijing area. In the early 1960s, a grup f scientists travelled t Saihanba t find a slutin. They fund an ld tree in the middle f the desert. “Maybe we can still plant trees here,” they thught. In 1962, the first tree planters arrived in Saihanba. The cld and dry weather made their wrk very difficult, and strng winds blew away many yung trees. In winter, it gt as cld as -40°C.
Three generatins f frest wrkers cntinued the hard wrk. Thanks t them, Saihanba is green again. It is tday the wrld’s biggest man-made frest. There are hundreds f millins f trees there. The frest helps prvide the capital with clean water, and there are fewer sandstrms in the Beingjing area nw.
