Training was cruel, as Penny Lee Dean prepared fr what wuld be a recrd-setting swim — regardless f sex — acrss the English Channel in 1978. “Yur hands cramp (痉挛), yur legs cramp,” she remembers.
While the cld was bne-chilling, vercming it has been essential t her success as a recrd-breaking swimmer. An ability t tlerate extreme cld is ne f the advantages that wmen may have in this sprt, as their distributin f fat is helpful fr regulating bdy temperature in cld water.
Dean believes that any upper hand wmen might have in pen-water swimming ver lng distances is mre abut mental adaptatin and the ability t bear discmfrt than abut insulatin (阻隔). In ultradistance events, the ability t handle mre factrs, frm weather t pain, becmes particularly imprtant.
In fact, wmen can utperfrm r perfrm similarly t men in a range f cmpetitive events. Frm ultrarunning t shting sprts, in sme cmpetitins wmen have the edge. Cassi Rippel, the ISSF Athletes Cmmittee Chair, says that while men’s muscles tend t give them mre staying pwer, wmen’s lwer bdy mass and lwer centre f gravity, n average, allw them better balance cntrl. The rifle (步枪) events are the mst sex-balanced f the three types f shting events in the Olympics, accrding t Rippel.
The nearly century-lng histry f the Olympics is als a histry f the grwth f female empwerment. An increasing number f female athletes have brken gender barriers, achieving remarkable success in traditinally male-dminated sprts. The Paris Olympics are the first Olympics t have equal numbers f female and male athletes. This is als an pprtunity t think carefully abut what gap s in inclusin still remain.
While much f the science f sex and perfrmance may be unsettled, ne thing that’s very clear is that mre research needs t invlve wmen. The path tward greater inclusin has nt been straight, and mre questins than answers remain abut the rle f sex in athletic perfrmance.
    28. What challenge did Dean face when breaking the recrd?
    A. The lng distance. B. The lw temperature. C. The extra bdy fat. D. The intense training.
    29. What advantage may wmen have in lng and pen-water swimming?
    A. Strng awareness abut keeping warm. B. Superir flexibility t tugh situatins.
    C. Inbrn talent fr lng distance swimming. D. Abslute cncentratin n swimming path.
    30. What des the underlined phrase “have the edge” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Appear weaker. B. Seem cnservative. C. Take the lead. D. Shw less pressure.
    31. What des the text mainly talk abut?
    A. Wmen’s ptential in sprts. B. Sprts suitable fr wmen.
    C. Views n gender and sprts. D. Females in the Olympics.

Birepsitries such as the ne n Svalbard in Nrway are designed t be durable but may still cnflict with earthly risks, the scientists warn, and having a shelter n the mn culd prvide a back-up plan that is uninfluenced t earthbund events. The cnstantly cld temperatures n the mn are ideal fr a birepsitry f crypreserved (冷冻保存的) samples, the scientists say, as it wuld mean the system culd be passive and nt need a pwer supply.
“Such a birepsitry wuld safeguard bidiversity and act as a measure against its lss ccurring because f natural disasters, climate change, ver-ppulatin, resurce depletin (枯竭), wars, sciecnmic threats and ther causes n Earth,” the scientists write. “This is a decades-lng prgramme,” the scientists write. “Prtecting Earth’s life must be a tp pririty in the rush n the mn sites fr industries and many types f science.”
NASA is als interested in the suth ple f the mn fr the same permanently shadwed regins because they may als hst ice and this culd help establish a human pssessin n the mn.
    32. What is the lunar “Nah’s Ark” actually?
    A. A territry B. A strehuse. C. A burial field. D. A labratry.
    33. Hw d the bny fish appear in the prject?
    A. As an emergency fd. B. As an endangered species. C. As an easily stred fish. D. As an experimental article.
    34. The mn is cnsidered ideal fr the prject due t ________.
    A. sustained cld B. a lack f sunlight C. the best security D. lwered radiatin
    35. What can be inferred frm the last tw paragraphs?
    A. Species n Earth are gradually increasing. B. The threats n the earth are under cntrl.
    C. Scientists have high hpes fr “Nah’s Ark” D. “Nah’s Ark” is currently running smthly.

M: Is it pssible t see dlphins in the UK waters?
W: Yes. In several lcatins. We have a dlphin base in the eastern part f Sctland. It has very little shipping there. But recently, we’ve been a bit wrried. Because il cmpanies want t increase explratin there. Althugh there’s little pllutin frm il, explratin creates lts f underwater nise. That’ll influence the dlphins.
M: In that case, what can we d t help?
W: T address the prblem, we cnsidered mving the dlphin base, but plenty f funds were needed and it was nearly impssible t realize. S we decided n smething else. We launched a prject called Adpt a Dlphin. Peple can select ne f ur dlphins t spnsr. The mney they give will be used t feed and prtect the dlphin they chse.

Besides, the best three students can als get behind-the-scenes access while helping d research. These are the main tasks yu’re ging t take n if yu are selected.
