In the study researchers lked at abut 1,900 schlchildren. The scientists fund that the kids wh had been instructed t spend mre time utdrs ver three years were 23 percent less likely t develp nearsightedness during this time than thse wh had nt been instructed t spend mre time utdrs. Mrever ,amng the kids wh did becme nearsighted during the study, the degree t which their eyesight wrsened was slightly smaller amng thse wh spent mre time utdrs.
The researchers selected six schls and required the children whse average age was 7 at the start f the study, t attend ne additinal 60minute class f utdr activities during each schl day fr three years. The parents f these children were als encuraged t engage their children in utdr activities after schl especially during weekends and hlidays. The ther half f the children frm anther six schls cntinued their usual activity patterns. After three years,30.4 percent f the kids in the interventin(干预)grup had becme nearsighted cmpared with 38.5 percent f the kids in the ther grup.
It is nt clear exactly why spending mre time utside wuld benefit children's eyesight, the researchers said. Hwever, sme research has suggested that the higher levels f light intensity fund utdrs may increase the release f the chemical dpamine(多巴胺)f the eye. In turn dpamine is knwn t restrain(抑制) the type f grwth in the eye that is assciated with nearsightedness.
Based n the new results, the researchers recmmend that children spend mre time utdrs because f the ptential benefits t their eyesight. Hwever, it’s imprtant t prtect kids' skin and eyes frm UV light ,which can be damaging.
