With the cmbinatin f his dead phne battery and my dead car battery, I was running late and unable t cmmunicate that t him. As a result, he was left alne and extremely frightened. He became very upset utside the shp, exactly where I’d tld him t wait.
This was when a beautiful lder Vietnamese lady nt nly went t check n him, but tk him inside her shp, calmed him dwn, gt my phne number frm him and called me.
Five years later he cntinued t g int her shp every afternn, bught a drink, had a chat and she sent him hme with enugh bread and rlls t feed a small natin.
Sam will graduate this year, and I’m increasingly feeling the need t drp by the shp t let this wnderful lady knw that she has saved Sam, and that she has saved me. I’m nt sure if I can cmmunicate all f this, but at least I will get t thank her.
There are peple I will nt get t thank, thugh—the many kind strangers wh have been there fr Sam, And believe me. if yu’re wndering if this wrld is a cmplete mess right nw, I’m here t say that it is nt.
S I guess this is a lve letter t thse f yu wh have helped a stranger ut f the gdness f yur heart. Please knw that yu are appreciated, that yur beautiful heart and kindness are appreciated, and that, perhaps unknwingly, yu have made a great difference in smene’s life.

The human bdy is designed t mve. But mdern lifestyles and ffice jbs rarely give us the chance t mve arund. As we knw, we’re sitting while we’re eating; we sit in the car and we sit while we watch TV. And many f us sit fr many hurs at wrk.
New research shws that sitting less than three hurs a day might extend yur life by tw years. Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University f Luisiana in the suthern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitus in ur lives, meaning it is smething we d all the time, everywhere.
Hwever, Mr. Katzmarzyk says that des nt mean yu can sit fr the rest f yur waking hurs. He als says yu may exercise ften, “We can’t thrw away physical activity. It’s extremely imprtant. We have 60 years f research shwing us that.”
Mr. Katzmarzyk and his clleagues are part f a new generatin f researchers studying hw sitting all day affects length f life. “Studies that have assessed the relatinship between sitting and mrtality(死亡率)r televisin viewing and mrtality are very rare. There’s nly been a few f them, actually five r six nw, in the last fur r five years.” They fund that cutting televisin time t less than tw hurs a day culd add ne pint fur years t life.
Luckily, change is al cming sme ffices, especially in the design f desks. A “standing desk” lets peple stand while they wrk. Anther new design is called the “treadmill desk”. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets yu walk in ne place. Even sme U.S. schls are beginning t experiment with desks that are part bicycle t keep children mving. That’s ne f the strategies that many cmpanies are using nw.
Mr. Katzmarzyk als says studying this prblem has inspired his team t make a few changes in their wn lives.
    24. The underlined wrd “ubiquitus” is clsest in meaning t _______.

We live in a time when technlgy has enabled everyne t be a jurnalist. Yet nt everyne has the prper training. Whether ut f ignrance r ut f a sense f hnr, sme f the jurnalism nline has dne a better jb f changing public pinin than shwing the whle truth.
Tw recent stries are perfect reminders f the difference between the urge t change minds and basic jurnalism ethics(道德标准).
“A cllege kid tk sme birds frm a nearby tree and was sentenced t 10 years in prisn,” went a recent nline headline frm the Chinese Internet. The accmpanying vte shwed that 85 percent f respndents sided with the student. Sme jked that mst bys wuld be guilty f such a crime because everyne had stlen birds when they were children.
Left ut f the riginal reprt was the fact that the birds in questin were falcns, which are n the natin’s list f prtected, endangered species. Birdwatchers als said that it was unlikely that Yan Xiatian, the 21-year-ld defendant, had fund the 12 birds in ne tree. Fr this particular species, he had t search a much larger area.
Fr me, the mst imprtant questins are: Did he knw it was illegal befre he tk the birds and did he knw that befre he sld them?
Fllw-up reprting has fund that the evidence shwed that Yan knew what he was ding. The nly pint f uncertainty is the very first time he tk the first birds when he culd be unaware f their status and value. As a matter f fact, the prsecutr(公诉人)started ut asking fr a light punishment, but tk a U-turn when data frm Yan’s cellphne clearly shwed that he had stlen them.
The punishment, while sunding harsh, fllwed the law almst t the letter. The curt has since said it wuld review the case, a sign f giving in t public pressure.
Let’s lk at the secnd stry, which can be read as either “Elderly man had t walk in his shrts fr hurs in Sanya after his bike was taken by the city’s quasi-plice(城管)” r “Retired fficial illegally parked his bike fr a swim and made the city aplgize and fire a lw-paid city management staff member”.
Bth played up(渲染)different parts f the same stry. Fr me, Bi Guchang’s age and frmer fficial title are nt relevant t the case. The key is whether he indeed parked his bike illegally and whether prper prcedures were being fllwed by taking it away and making him get it back. Yet the reprts fcused n the image f an ld man walking nly in his shrts. He culd have phned his family fr backup r taken a taxi hme first befre cmplaining, as mst wuld d in that situatin.
Such stries read like badly-written mrality tales, with everything in black and white and a simple yes-r-n message. Real life is much mre cmplicated. Reprters have t be neutral(中立的)and avid taking sides t early.
    28. Why was Yan Xiatian sentenced t 10 years in prisn?
    A. He tk sme birds frm a nearby tree.
    B. He searched a much larger area fr birds.
    C. He illegally tk sme falcns and sld them.
    D. He tk 12 birds withut knwing they were falcns.
    29. Accrding t the passage, the writer implied that ________.
    A. the judges shuld still fllw the law strictly.
    B. the punishment was t much fr the student
    C. the student didn’t get fair treatment frm the judges
    D. the curt will re-sentence the student
    30. Which f the fllwing is the best title f the passage?
    A. Tw Mrality Stries
    B. Hw t Be a Jurnalist
    C. Unfair Punishment
    D. Telling Truth r Taking Sides
