“Cnnecting with thers in meaningful ways tends t make peple happier, and yet peple als seem unwilling t engage in deeper cnversatin,” said Nichlas Epley, a prfessr f behaviral science at the University f Chicag. “This struck us as an interesting scial paradx: If cnnecting with thers in deep and meaningful ways increases well-being, then why aren’t peple ding it mre ften in daily life?”

Afterward, they rated their predictins n actual basis. If deep cnnectin is better, then why aren’t peple actually having mre f them? The researchers suspected it might be because peple underestimate hw interested strangers are in learning abut their deeper thughts and feelings. In sme f the experiments, the researchers asked participants t predict hw interested their cnversatin partner wuld be in the discussin, and then afterward t indicate hw interested their partner actually was in the discussin. On average, peple cnsistently underestimated hw interested their partners wuld be in learning abut them.
“Peple seemed t imagine that revealing smething meaningful abut themselves in cnversatin wuld be met with blank stares and silence, nly t find this wasn’t true in the actual cnversatin,” Epley said. “Human beings are deeply scial and tend t respnd in cnversatin. If yu share smething imprtant, yu are likely t get smething imprtant exchanged in return, leading t a cnsiderably better cnversatin.”
