Baya Mahieddine is ne f Algeria’s mst celebrated artists. As a self-taught artist, Baya kept the cnnectin t tribal art that s fascinated the Western wrld, and actively rejected any frm f classificatin.
Brn in Algeria in 1931, Baya’s life was far frm easy. Orphaned at the age f five, she was raised by her grandmther. Unable t attend schl, she wrked as a servant fr a French wman named Marguerite Camina, wh wuld later be described by the artist as her adptive mther. Baya Mahieddine is ne f Algeria’s mst celebrated artists. As a self-taught artist, Baya kept the cnnectin t tribal art that s fascinated the Western wrld, and actively rejected any frm f classificatin.
Brn in Algeria in 1931, Baya’s life was far frm easy. Orphaned at the age f five, she was raised by her grandmther. Unable t attend schl, she wrked as a servant fr a French wman named Marguerite Camina, wh wuld later be described by the artist as her adptive mther. Camina nticed the talent that her yung servant displayed in making figures frm clay, and encuraged her t develp her skill.
