Researchers frm Nrth Carlina State University argue that the additin f a furth (white-clred) traffic signal wuld bring different traffic effects.
“Our wrk intrduced the idea f a furth traffic signal called a ‘white phase’, which taps int the cmputing pwer f autnmus vehicles (AVs) in rder t expedite traffic at crssrads,” says Prf. T be clear, this imprves travel time, fuel efficiency and safety fr all f the cars.”
The white phase cncept takes advantage f AVs’ ability t cmmunicate wirelessly with each ther and the cmputers in cntrl f traffic signals. When enugh AVs apprach a crssrad, this wuld activate the new traffic light — the white light. While red lights mean stp, and green lights mean g, white lights will tell human drivers t simply fllw the car in frnt f them. In ther wrds, the white light serves as a signal. During the time, AVs are crdinating(协调) their mvement t facilitate efficient traffic flw thrugh the crssrad. When t many vehicles appraching the crssrad are driven by human drivers instead f AVs, the signal will return t the traditinal green yellw red mde.
“If at sme pint in the future we see almst universal adptin f AVs, ur mdels suggest that delays at crssrads wuld decrease by mre than 25%,” Hajbabaie says.
Study authrs acknwledge gvernments prbably wn’t adpt the new cncept anytime sn. “Still, we’re nw taking steps t ensure that future pilt prjects will be bth safe and effective. We’re currently setting up a physical testbed that will allw us t experiment with this cncept in the physical wrld — nt just in a cmputer mdel,” Hajbabaie cncludes. “Hwever, the vehicles we’re using in the testbed are small enugh t hld in ur hands. This will help us identify challenges withut the expense — and safety risk — invlved with using real vehicles.”
32. What des the underlined wrd “expedite” in paragraph 2mean?
A. Wrk ut. B. Speed up. C. Put ff. D. Hld back.
33. What des paragraph 3 fcus n?
A. Hw the white phrase wrks. B. When the traditinal signals return.
C. What the white phrase brings vehicles. D. Why traffic efficiency is imprved.
34. What des Hajbabaie expect f the white phrase?
A. It’ll becme mre mature. B. It’ll reach cnsumers very sn.
C. It’ll reduce experimental csts. D. It’ll be tested in a cmputer mdel.
35. What’s the best title fr the text?
A. Using White Phrase Indicates Advanced Traffic
B. Furth Traffic Signal Is Invented t Guide AVs
C. Traffic Cngestin Makes White Phase Happen
D. Adding 4th Traffic Signal Can Ease Cngestin
