BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua net)-- The re-entry capsule f Shenzhu-5,which carried China's first astrnaut Lt. Cl. Yang Liwei t and returned frm the space between Oct. 15-16, was handed t the Chinese Research Institute f Space Technlgy here Friday. The capsule, which landed safely in nrth China's Inner Mnglia Autnmus Regin at 6:23 a.m. Thursday, just 4.8 kilmeters ff the pre-set target, arrived in Beijing Friday afternn n a special train. After a primary inspectin, experts cncluded that the buffer engines f the capsule perated nrmally befre the landing and the entire capsule remained intact. Shenzhu-5, measuring 9.2 meters in length and weighing 7,790 kilgrams, cnsists f the rbit, re-entry and prpulsin mdules. The capsule will sn be pened and the data cllected by the scientific apparatus n bard will be studied.

JIUQUAN, China (AP) -- Tw years after China became nly the third natin t launch a human int rbit, a pair f astrnauts blasted ff Wednesday n a lnger, riskier missin after receiving a farewell visit frm Premier Wen Jiaba.
Wen said the "glrius and sacred missin" wuld demnstrate China's natinal cnfidence and ability.

In a break with the space agency's typical secrecy, the launch was shwn live n Chinese state televisin. The missin, reprtedly due t last up t five days, is a key prestige prject fr China's cmmunist leaders, wh have justified the expense f a manned space prgram by saying that it will drive ecnmic develpment. It will be mre cmplicated than the first flight in 2003, which carried ne astrnaut and lasted just 21 1/2 hurs.
Minutes after liftff, missin cntrl annunced that the first stage bster had successfully separated frm the rcket and that the flight had entered its preset rbit. The fficial Xinhua News Agency said the tw astrnauts, r "taiknauts," will take ff their 22-pund spacesuits t travel back and frth between the tw halves f their vessel -- a re-entry capsule and an rbiter that will stay alft after they land.
Earlier in the day, Xinhua annunced the identities f the tw taiknauts -- Fei Junlng, 40, and Nie Haishen, 41. Previus reprts said 14 frmer fighter pilts were training fr the missin. Images f Fei and Jun in their cckpit as the craft rared tward rbit were bradcast live t hundreds f millins f Chinese televisin viewers. Nne f the 2003 space flight was shwn live by Chinese televisin. "Feeling pretty gd," Fei said in the first bradcast cmment frm the astrnauts. Xinhua said the crew was picked frm a field f six finalists. Nie was ne f three finalists fr the 2003 missin, which made a natinal her f Yang Liwei. The tw taiknauts will cnduct experiments in rbit, Xinhua said withut elabrating.
China, the third natin t put a man int rbit, insisted ahead f the launch that its aspiratins in space were strictly peaceful and that it ppses deplying weapns there. Space fficials say they hpe t land an unmanned prbe n the mn by 2010 and launch a space statin. "We d nt wish t see any frm f weapns in uter space, s we reaffirm that ur space flight prgram is an imprtant element f mankind's peaceful utilizatin f uter space," Freign Ministry spkesman Kng Quan said.
Internatinal reprters were barred frm the launch base. The handful f Chinese jurnalists allwed t attend the liftff were warned they might be rdered t hand ver any phts r vide -- a pssible image-cntrl measure in case f an accident.
The Shenzhu -- r Divine Vessel -- capsule is based n Russia's three-seat Syuz, thugh with extensive mdificatins. Spacesuits, life-supprt systems and ther equipment are based n technlgy purchased frm Russia. But space fficials say all equipment launched int rbit is Chinese-made. China has had a rcketry prgram since the 1950s and fired its first satellite int rbit in 1970. It regularly launches satellites fr freign clients abard its giant Lng March bsters.
