Cultural differences exist in almst every aspect and are therefre reflected in (32)
relatinship and marriage.
It is nt easy t keep a Chinese-Western relatinship, fr cultural differences may result in (33). Frm the traditinal Chinese (34) ,marriage is a relatinship invlving family, friends and relatives. In cntrast, westerners’ marriages recgnize the (35) and privacy f the cuple.
That is why westerners smetimes cannt understand why we Chinese need t supprt ur (36) if we are asked t d s. Chinese peple need t maintain their “face” and “relatins”. Hwever, the American character is full f paradxes (矛盾) . The American peple are bth extremely rmantic and pragmatic. The American is a(n) (51) peple, but in every field there are wrkahlics (工作狂) . They chse a quiet place, dug a deep hle and buried the treasure in it. Then they made a map f where the treasure was r wrte dwn ther clues that wuld help them r smene else t find it again.
In Britain a few years ag, a writer wrte abut sme treasure that he had buried. He put clues in the stry t help readers find it. Thusands f peple hunted fr the treasure. They dug hles all ver Britain, hping t find it.
One f the mst ppular adventure stries s ever written is Rbert Luis Stephensn’s “Treasure Island”, an exciting stry abut a yung by, Jim Hawkins, wh is captured by pirates (海盗) and later finds sme buried treasure.
Then there is the true stry abut a man wh had t travel verseas fr a year. He did nt trust banks, s he buried his life savings in a park. Then he went away. On his return, he went straight t the park. But the park was n lnger there. In its place there was a huge building.

The idea that richer cuntries are happier may seem bvius. Hwever, in 1974, research by ecnmist Richard Easterlin fund therwise, he discvered that while individuals with higher incmes were mre likely t be happy, this did nt hld at a natinal level. In the United States, fr example, average incme per persn rse steadily between 1946 and 1970, but reprted happiness levels shwed n psitive lng-term trend; in fact, they declined between 196050 and 1970. These differences between natin-level and individual results s gave rise t the term “Easterlin paradx(矛盾)”: the idea that a higher rate f ecnmic grwth des nt result in higher lng-term happiness.
Having access t additinal incme seems t nly prvide a temprary surge (激增) in happiness. Since a certain minimum incme is needed fr basic necessities, it’s pssible that the happiness bst frm extra cash isn’t that great nce yu rise abve the pverty line. This wuld explain Easterlin’s findings in the United States and ther develped cuntries. He argued that life satisfactin des rise with average incmes but nly in the shrt term.
Recent research has challenged the Easternlin paradx, hwever. In 2013, scilgists Ruut Veenhven and Flris Vergunst cnducted a study using statistics frm the Wrld Database f Happiness. Their analysis revealed a psitive crrelatin between ecnmic grwth and happiness. Anther study by the University f Michigan fund that there is n maximum wealth threshld at which mre mney stps t cntribute t yur happiness: “If there is a satiatin pint, we are yet t reach it.” The study’s findings suggested that every extra dllar yu earn makes yu happier. With a much debate abut the relatinship between mney and happiness, it’s clear that happiness itself is a cmplex cncept and depends n many factrs.
Accrding t psychlgists Selin Kesebir and Shigehir Oishi, happiness als depends n hw yur incme cmpares t the peple arund yu. They argue that a cuntry’s ecnmic grwth nly makes its citizens happier if wealth is evenly divided. In emerging cuntries with high incme inequality—where the rich get richer and the pr get prer—average happiness tends t drp because nly relatively few peple benefit frm the ecnmic prsperity (繁荣). This suggests that gvernments shuld cnsider implementing plicies t ensure mre equal distributin f wealth. The happier peple are, the mre prductive they are likely t becme, thus leading t imprved ecnmic utcmes at the individual and natinal levels.
There is cntinuing debate abut the link between wealth and happiness, with arguments bth fr and against the ntin that richer cuntries are happier. Hwever, it is clear that wealth alne isn’t enugh t make us happy. The effect f incme inequality n happiness shws that happiness is a scial respnsibility. We need t remember the psitive effects f genersity, altruism (利他主义), and building scial cnnectins. Perhaps ur fcus shuld be less n hw much mney we have, and mre n hw we use it.
63. Accrding t the passage, Easterlin Paradx refers t .
A. the fact that the mre mney, the happier peple will feel
B. the suggestin that mney shuld be given the tp pririty
C. the questin hw ecnmic utcmes are distributed natinwide
D. the pinin that higher incme desn’t necessarily lead t happiness

Glbalizatin has significantly influenced fd cnsumptin in mst parts f wrld, but ne cuntry whse fd has a lng histry f being glbalized is Italy. If yu walk dwn any main street in any majr wrld city, yu will find at least ne Italian restaurant. Furthermre, Italy has seen changes in its wn eating habits due t influence frm ther cuntries.
Fd has always been very imprtant fr Italian families. Italians take a lt f pride in the making and preparatin f fd. Until recently, pastas—a basic Italian fd—wuld have been made by peple in their lcal area. Families wuld als have made the sauces t eat with the pasta at hme. 67
Nwadays, hwever, Italian eating habits appear t have changed. Peple n lnger spend s much time preparing their meals. Indeed, frzen r takeaway Italian meals have becme very ppular in Italy. Furthermre, dried pasta is nw mass-prduced and sld relatively cheaply in the last five years, accrding t ne manufacturer. 68 This trend is mre cmmn in urban areas such as Rme, Milan and Venice, althugh many smaller twns are als experiencing similar changes.
These changes have bth advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, glbalizatin has increased the range f fd available in Italy. Italians nw have much mre chice in terms f what they eat. They als d nt need t spend s lng preparing and making fd, unless f curse they want t. In cntrast, it can be argued that large restaurant chains are becming increasingly pwerful, resulting in the destructin f lcal and natinal specialties. 69
70 Cnvenience fds have replaced many f the traditinal hme-cked meals, and the availability f freign fruits has greatly increased. While this extra chice is welcmed by sme, thers fear the damage it may cause t Italian traditins.
