Castles were riginally built in England by the Nrmans in 1066. They built twers and walls t secure the land they had taken. These castles prvided the Nrmans with a quiet and safe place. Twers were built frm which defenders culd prvide fire n bth sides. The twers were cnnected t the castle by wden bridges, s that if ne twer fell, the rest f the castle was still easy t defend. A lt f rings f castle walls were cnstructed, s that even if attackers went past ne wall, they wuld be caught n a killing grund between inner and uter walls. All f these increased the defense f castles.
Gunpwder (火药) led t the end f the castle. During the 15th century, artillery, a kind f large guns, became pwerful enugh t break thrugh stne walls. This greatly made the rle f castles less effective.
