    One night, as I was driving dwn the rad, I fund smething was sitting in the middle f the rad. A few secnds later, I realized I was lking at a large turtle (海龟). Afraid f it being crashed by cars, s I pulled ver, ran acrss the rad and dragged the turtle t safety. But I’d made ne big mistake.
    I had heard that the best way t pick up a turtle withut hurting it was picking it by the tail in rder nt t get bitten. S I’d made that big mistake. While the turtle turned ut OK generally, I was determined t figure ut hw t mve a turtle prperly. I needed t find smene wh dealt with turtles. I fund the Ontari Turtle Cnservatin Centre. I talked t Dr. Sue, its Executive and Medical Directr.
    Dr. Sue tld me that the rganizatin dealt with a number f aspects f turtle cnservatin, including rescue, settlement, birth prgrams, research, and educatin. Sue explained that suthern Ontari is nt nly hme t a vast majrity f turtles in Canada, but is als ne f the vastest rad netwrks f the cuntry.
    “Ninety percent f injured turtles brught in are caused by cars. These turtles spend a lt f time n land. And they d travel many kilmeters n land fr a variety f reasns, t find a nesting spt, r t hang ut fr the summer r winter. Turtles knw where they want t g. S, just keep them ging in the directin they want t g and yu may have saved a turtle’s life,” Dr. Sue said.
    Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities (设备) ready t g, including an X-ray machine. That’s when the team gets t wrk with healing injuries, and help their patient.

    Six scientists received sme gd news: they were being treated t an eight-mnth, all free trip t Hawaii. There was just ne little difficulty: they wuld be spending all eight mnths living under Mars-like cnditins t simulate (模拟) a missin t the planet. They carried ut their wn research prjects, as NASA researchers watched t see whether they wuld develp cabin fever (幽闭烦躁症)-a feeling f upset and impatience when peple have been inside fr t lng.     Fr the missin, surfing, fresh air and sunshine were all ff the menu. During the eight mnths, the scientists had t live tgether in just 1, 300 square feet f living space, built n the side f the Mauna La (a vlcan). Whenever they wanted t take a shrt walk utside their “huse”, they had t put n a 40-pund spacesuit. As if t make things even tugher, shwers were limited t eight minutes each week.
    Perhaps it shuld nt be verly surprising that with the six having nw cmpleted their missin, they said re-entering the utside wrld was “a big jy”.
    One pssible reasn why the six survived culd be fund in their blgs. The missin cmmander, Ms Leni, said she learnt t play an instrument and imprved her French. Anther scientist, Sphie Milam, excitedly psted a mdel bat made ut f sticks by herself.
    But it wasn’t all fun. Abut halfway thrugh the missin, bad weather left them unable t use their slar-pwered batteries. They had t gather clsely tgether fr warmth and limit energy use t just the imprtant systems. Ms Leni said, “If we had really been n Mars, that wuld have been life r death.”

    Hneybees fly much lnger distances in the summer than in the spring and autumn t find gd surces f fd, a new study has fund.
    Researchers at Sussex University spent tw years researching the “waggle(摇摆)dance” f hneybees, a frm f cmmunicatin by which the bees tell their nestmates where t g t get the best surce f fd t bring back t the hive(蜂箱).
    By measuring the angle f the dance in relatin t the sun and the length f time the bee waggled its bdy while mving in a figure f eight pattern, researchers have been able t map the distance and lcatin where bees frage(觅食)frm mnth t mnth.
    With a ne-secnd waggle equal t a fraging distance f 750 meters,the bees' dance language revealed that the area they cvered in search f fd is abut 22 times greater in the summer (July and August) than in spring(March) and six times greater in summer than in the autumn (Octber). In the summer the area they cver is 15.2 sq km,cmpared t 0.8 km in spring and 5. 1 km in the autumn.
    Hneybees will nt waste valuable time and energy travelling t find fd if they dn't need t, s the researchers say the results shw that the summer is the mst challenging seasn fr bees t cllect the nectar and pllen frm flwers.
    “There is a large quantity f flwers in the spring and autumn, but it is harder fr them t lcate gd blcks f flwers in the summer because agricultural intensificatin means there are fewer wildflwers in the cuntryside fr bees,” said Frances Ratnieks, authr f the study.
    The researchers say the results can be used t fcus effrts t help bees better. “The bees are telling us where they are fraging s we can nw understand hw best t help them by planting mre flwers fr them in the summer,” said Ratnieks.
