As smene wh teaches Dickens, the questin f why we still read him is ften in my mind. 2._______One day nearly10 years ag, hwever, when I was giving a lecture, I was telling the students that fr Victrian readers, Dickens' writing was a “tune-in-next-week” type f thing that generated “But why shuld we still read this stuff?” the student asked. The answer I gave was nly acceptable, “Because he teaches yu hw t think,” I said.
The questin annyed me fr years, and fr years I tld myself answers, but never with cmplete satisfactin. We read Dickens because he is nt just a man f his wn times but als a man fr ur times. We read Dickens because we can learn frm the experiences f his characters almst as easily as we can earn frm ur wn experiences.
But these are nt exactly the reasns why I read Dickens. My search fr an answer cntinued until ne day a text message came frm a student f mine. “We still read Dickens’ nvels,” she wrte, “because they tell us why we are what we are.” Simple as it was, that’s the explanatin I had sught fr years.
Dickens shines a light n wh we are during the best f times and wrst f times. 5._______If yu h pick up ne f his many nvels, read it and enjy what it has t tell yu abut yurself

I culd see enugh thrugh the plastic bag t tell that she had bught candy bars--fifty-cent candy bars! What did she d with that twenty-dllar bill I had given her? I was s angry. After getting hme, I called her int my bedrm and clsed the dr. I culdn’t hld back my anger and shuted at her, “What abut the rest f the mney?
