What d yu KNOW abut American fd culture?
What d yu WANT t knw abut American fd culture?
    A Bite f America
If yu have seen the ppular dcumentary (纪录片) , A Bite f China, then yu’ll have an idea f what it’s like t take a bite f Chinese fd culture. But d yu knw what it’s like t have a bite f America?
The first difference frm China can be summed up in the wrd “mney”. Always remember t give tips when yu eat ut in America. In mst Chinese restaurants, yu d nt tip the waiters and waitresses. But in America, nt tipping is cnsidered rude. Last summer in the U.S, we paid as much as 15 percent in tips in sme restaurants. It seems high, but this tip rate (比率) is quite nrmal.
Besides, in the United States, it is cnsidered plite fr a restaurant t serve all dishes at nce s everyne eats their wn dish at the same time. In China, dishes are served as sn as they are finished t maximize (最大化) efficiency (效率). Once I ate ut with my friends in a restaurant in China, and my friends had t wait fr me t finish eating fr almst half an hur because my meal came s much later. I persnally like it that all dishes are served at the same time in the United States.
What’s mre, the flavr f American fd is best described as “juicy”. Steak is an American favrite and American peple ften ask fr their steak nly t be half-cked s as t make it juicier.
In additin, American peple als put lts f tasty sauces nt their plates, which makes the fd taste even better, thugh they ften make the fd less healthy at the same time. Fr example, it is cmmn t add ketchup (番茄酱) and mustard (芥末酱) t ht-dgs. Americans have tried cpying traditinal Chinese fd in many “Chinese restaurants”, adding much mre il t make the taste strnger. Hwever, I dislike American-style Chinese fd because they add t much fat. Nevertheless (然而), I recmmend yu t try real American fd, such as hamburgers and steaks, especially if yu are a meat-lver.
There are s many aspects f American fd culture that it is impssible t cver all f them in a shrt space. We cannt knw all the aspects f a certain fd culture, but we can learn abut it, taste it, understand and respect it—and enjy it.

WHEN it cmes t intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产), China currently has 38 items n the UNESCO list, the mst f any cuntry in the wrld. Hwever, nne f them are fd-related (与食物相关的). T make it n the list, a candidate (候选) must have deep cultural and scial meaning, UNESCO said. This, experts say, is smething Chinese cuisine is rich in. “The develpment f Chinese civilizatin evlved (演化) arund fd culture,” Bian Jiang, directr f the China Cuisine Assciatin (CCA), tld China Daily.
Many imprtant dates in China are marked with fd. Spring Festival celebratins, fr example, start with a bwl f “eight treasure” cngee (八宝粥) n the 8th day f the 12th lunar mnth f the Chinese lunar calendar (农历). It’s fllwed by the preparatin and eating f dumplings n Lunar New Year’s Eve and Lunar New Year’s Day. Then n 15th day f the Lunar New Year, peple eat yuanxia, r rice balls, t cnclude their celebratins.
Apart frm its symblic festive (节日的) meaning, Chinese cuisine shws a unique thery f health. While the West has a fd pyramid, the philsphy (哲学) f yin and yang can be fund in mst Chinese dishes. Accrding t it, all natural phenmena (现象) have ppsites that cmplement (补充) each ther. A diet that has a balance f yin and yang fds is said t help prevent illness and emtinal prblems. Generally speaking, fds that have a higher water cntent (含量) are cnsidered cl, r yin, in nature. Fds that have a higher energy cntent, particularly frm fat, are cnsidered warm, r yang, in nature. These are ften fds that are fried r rasted.
In additin t health cncerns, sme Chinese dishes shw great scial functins. Take the “fur dishes and ne sup” idea as an example. Accrding t legend, it riginated (起源) in the Ming Dynasty. Emperr Zhu Yuanzhang served a dinner f fur dishes and ne sup t fficials t advise against extravagance (奢侈). It later became a rule t stp expensive gvernment banquets (宴会).
Althugh Chinese fd cntains years f ancestral (古代的) wisdm, smetimes it’s beynd a freigner’s understanding. In 2011, the China Cuisine Assciatin made an applicatin t put mre than 30 Chinese fds and fd preparatin techniques n the UNESCO Lists f Intangible Cultural Heritage items, but failed. “Chinese cuisine is s cmplicated that it’s hard fr the UNESCO fficials t understand it as a whle,” Bian tld The Wall Street Jurnal. Nw, the assciatin is wrking n an imprved list f cuisine candidates t apply fr UNESCO heritage status (身份). And the result will be annunced in Nvember.
