The researchers recently published a new study abut cffee. They fund that the species appeared arund 600,000 years ag. The plant was likely the result f natural breeding (繁殖) f tw ther cffee species and likely develped withut the help f humans.
Wild cffee plants likely started in Ethipia. But they are thught t have been first rasted (炒) and brewed in Yemen starting in the 1400s. T learn abut arabica cffee’s past, researchers studied the genetic infrmatin and they als studied mre than 30 different arabica plants. One f the plants was a sample frm the 1700s prvided by the Natural Histry Museum in Lndn. The Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus used that plant t give cffee its scientific name. Researchers frm Nestle, a big Swiss fd cmpany which wns several cffee brands, helped with the study.
The arabica plant’s ppulatin changed ver thusands f years befre humans began grwing it. The arabica plants did well during warm, wet perids and suffered thrugh dry nes. These difficult times created what scientists call “ppulatin bttlenecks”, when nly a small number f genetically similar plants survived.
Tday, these genetic similarities mean arabica cffee plants are mre likely t be hurt by diseases like cffee leaf rust (锈病), which causes cstly lsses every year. The researchers explred the makeup f ne arabica variety that is resistant t cffee leaf rust. They are interested in parts f its genetic cde that culd help prtect the plant.
Explring arabica’s past and present culd help give infrmatin abut hw t keep cffee plants healthy—ensuring mrning cups f cffee int the future.
