Having attended a first⁃aid⁃at⁃wrk curse, Brian Cracknell sn fund himself respnding t tw emergencies in a week.
Brian was at wrk in his bus cmpany ffice in Westn⁃super⁃Mare n May 18 when a clleague called t say there had been an accident at a bus stp nearby. First aid is emergency care fr a victim f sudden illness r injury befre mre skillful medical treatment is available. First aid may save a life r imprve certain imprtant signs including the pulse, temperature, an unbstructed (未被阻塞的) airway and breathing. In minr emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim's cnditin frm wrsening and prvide relief frm pain.
First aid must be dne as quickly as pssible. In the case where the persn is badly injured, a few minutes can make the difference between cmplete recvery and lss f life.
First⁃aid measures depend upn a victim's needs and the prvider's level f knwledge and skill. Knwing what nt t d in an emergency is as imprtant as knwing what t d. Imprperly mving a persn with a neck injury, fr example, can lead t lifelng disability.
Despite the variety f pssible injuries, several suggestins shuld be fllwed if first aid applies t all emergencies. The first step is t call fr prfessinal medical help. The victim, if cnscius, shuld be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked fr permissin t prvide any first aid. Next, assess the scene, asking ther peple r the injured persn's family r friends abut details f the injury r illness, any care that may have already been given, and pre⁃existing cnditins such as high bld pressure and heart truble. The victim's medical card shuld be checked that describes special medical cnditins. Unless the accident scene becmes unsafe r the victim may suffer further injury, d nt mve the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment f the victim's cnditin t determine whether life⁃threatening cnditins exist. One methd f assessing a victim's cnditin is knwn as the ABC, which stands fr:
A—Airway: Is it pen and unbstructed?
B—Breathing: Is the persn breathing? Lk, listen, and feel the breath.

Over a fur⁃year perid, Swiss researchers have develped a machine that can keep human livers(肝) alive utside f the bdy fr ne week.
Livers are amng the mst cmmnly transplanted (移植)human rgans. Current technlgy can nly keep human livers alive fr up t 24 hurs. It is reprted that, in 2017, abut 8,000 liver transplants were perfrmed in the U.S., f which 360 used livers frm living givers. In additin, abut 11,500 peple were registered n a waiting list t receive a liver transplant. The researchers say the purpse f their “Liver4Life” machine is t perfrm what they call liver perfusin(灌注) peratins utside f the human bdy. Perfusin is the prcess by which bld r ther liquids are pumped thrugh rgans and tissue. The machine keeps the liver at the right temperature and mves it in a way that wuld be natural in the bdy. Using a pump t fill the liver with bld acting like a human heart, the machine als prvides xygen fr the rgan, cntrls red bld cell levels and remves waste.
The research team began their experiments with livers frm pigs. After repeated testing and engineering develpment, they succeeded in getting the pig livers t survive fr seven days with supprt nly prvided frm the Liver4Life machine.
