Fifty-seven percent f stargazers(观星者)struggled t see mre than 10 stars,while just 2%f participants said they experienced a truly dark sky making them able t cunt mre than 30,accrding t the research by the Campaign t Prtect Rural England(CPRE).Peple in the cuntryside were encuraged t cunt hw many stars they culd see with eyes within the cnstellatin(星座)f Orin,which is visible nly in the winter mnths.
Campaigners said the results f the star cunt,supprted by the British Astrnmical Assciatin,shwed the prblem f light pllutin and hw it affected ne f the cuntryside's mst magical sights-a dark,starry night sky. They said the results f the research t map England's night skies suggested mre culd be dne by the gvernment,lcal cuncils and the general public t reduce the negative effects f artificial light frm streets and buildings.
Emma Marringtn,a campaigner at the CPRE,said,"We're hugely grateful t the peple wh tk time t get ut and take part in ur star cunt. But it's deeply disappinting that the vast majrity were unable t experience the natural wnder f a truly dark sky blanketed with stars. Withut any actin,ur night sky will cntinue t be lst under a cvering f artificial light,ruining the health f the natural wrld."
She added,“The star cunt results shw just hw far-reaching the light frm street lights and buildings can be. Light desn't respect bundaries,and careless use can see it spread fr miles frm cities.”
She suggested better-designed lighting,street light dimming(暗淡)systems and part-night lighting where sme street lights are turned ff during the small hurs shuld prvide an pprtunity t limit the damage caused by light pllutin,reduce carbn emissins and save mney.
