When the time came t pwer dwn, many students were eager t be free f their phnes, while thers held nt their phnes like a favrite stuffed animal. Their emtins seemed t range frm wrry (“Hw will I talk with my friends?”) t expectatin (“I can’t wait t read mre bks.”).
Over the next few days, the students shwed a surprising surce f anxiety. Withut their phnes, they weren’t sure what t d when there was nthing t d. That’s when it hit me: I lng fr the kind f time alne with my thughts that my students feared. I use these mments t replay a difficult cnversatin until I knw where it went wrng r imagine myself living abrad. I stare at a persn sitting nearby and invent the stry f her life.
As we clsed in n the final days f the curse, I nticed a change in the kids’ attitude. Their anxiety faded. They went fr walks, cmpsed music, and played bard games with yunger sisters and brthers. They experienced life in the mment.
On the last day, when I returned their phnes, I expected the kids t pwer up immediately and g straight t scial media. Instead, mst f them left the classrm with screens still dark, saying they wanted t see hw lng they culd wait.
I knw the pull f the digital wrld is strng, but I’m hping the brief break frm near-cnstant cnnectivity has shwn my students that they have a chice in what t d in their dwntime, while they’re waiting in line fr cffee r walking hme. I hpe they seize the precius chance t daydream.

In 1969, psychlgists (心理学家) at the University f Illinis came up with the idea, called the Pllyanna hypthesis (假设), that humans have a universal tendency t use psitive wrds mre ften than negative nes. But thse findings were based n small studies.

On average, the ratings shwed that a Ggle search f Spanish websites had the highest scre fr the wrd happiness, fllwed by Prtuguese Ggle searches, Prtuguese Tweets and English Ggle Bks. Chinese Ggle Bks had the least happy wrds, fllwed by Krean mvie subtitles and English mvie lyrics. Teenage sailrs have been making headlines. A yung persn alne in a dangerus situatin attracts attentin — and spnsrs. Yung sailrs als attract divided pinins. Fr example, Jessica Watsn was asked by the lcal gvernment t cancel her vyage; yet the Prime Minister called her “a her fr yung Australians” when she returned. It seems there is cnfusin abut the ability and independence f yung peple.
Cnsider the case f the Dutch girl, Laura Dekker. When her father agreed t her making a sl (独自的) vyage at age 13, the Dutch Cuncil fr Child Care prevented it. The Wrld Sailing Speed Recrd Cuncil als mved t discurage very yung sailrs by ablishing (废除) their age-based recrds in early 2009. S cmmunity cntrl f children under 16 years already happens.
Teenage brains, the ppular psychlgists tell us, are likely t make wrng judgments. But such generalizatins ften d nt apply t specific individuals. Between the ages f 14 and 18, teenagers vary greatly in their abilities. The amunt f independence each is allwed shuld be determined nt simply by their age but by discussing with the relevant, respnsible adults. Sme teens are certainly inexperienced and capable f childish mistakes, but the nes wh attempt dangerus jurneys nrmally d s by winning the cnfidence f hard-headed and well-qualified adult supprters.
But it is als wrng t think that any 16-year-ld can gain achievements as unusual as Jessica Watsn’s. This can have the ppsite effect f making them feel incapable because remarkable accmplishments are beynd them.
Teenage sailrs shuld nt be judged by precnceived (事先形成的) views abut yung peple. But nr shuld “rdinary” teenagers feel pressure t achieve extrardinary persnal gals. In fact, I believe the example f sl sailing ver-stresses individualism. The teenage years are when mst f us “rdinary” peple learn that we can achieve great things in cperatin with thers.
31. What d we knw abut Jessica Watsn?
A. She wanted t attract ptential spnsrs.
B. She successfully cmpleted her vyage.
C. She was discuraged by the Prime Minister.
D. She wrked as a sailr fr the lcal gvernment.
32. Why des the authr mentin the Dutch girl in Para 2?
A. T praise her fr her bravery.
B. T stress she was verprtected.
C. T shw cmmunity cntrl ver teenage sailrs.
D. T explain the cmmn independence f yung peple.
33. What des the underlined wrd “generalizatins” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. cntrlsB. experiencesC. faultsD. pinins
34. What des the authr think f teenagers’ independence?
A. It is clsely related t their age.
B. It ften leads t wrng judgments.
C. It is develped thrugh independent jurneys.
D. It differs hugely frm individual t individual.
35. What is the authr’s attitude twards teenage sailrs?
