The WNO launched the True Vice Award t prmte inclusiveness in pera, which traditinally defines a singer’s gender by the sund f their vice rather than their identity. Gfrth is a tenr, which is typically a male vcal categry, but she perfrms female rles in peras. She is currently based in Prtland, Oregn, and perfrms as a slist in the Pacific Nrthwest regin.

Maths phbia(恐怖症) is lder than yu might think. A hundred years ag, German physicist Felix Auerbach, disappinted at the phenmenn and hping t find ways t address it, wrte a little bk called The Fear f Mathematics and Hw t Overcme It. Maths, he said, has s much t cntribute t sciety that addressing this fear is a challenge f the highest imprtance.
Why d we fear mathematics? At heart, says Auerbach, it cmes dwn t a fundamental misunderstanding f what maths is. The fear f messing up a calculatin may be real, but the fact that there are many excellent mathematicians wh are terrible at arithmetic prves that numeracy and mathematics aren’t the same thing. We understand this abut writing literature. The art f creating an appealing narrative in beautiful prse(散文) is different frm the technical skill f getting the spelling and punctuatin right. The same is true with maths. It isn’t mere calculatin.
What, then, is mathematics? Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art. Actually, part f the issue is that we are stuck in the first bx. The incredible applicatin f maths in the sciences and engineering has meant that it is pssible, thugh undesirable, t teach it nly with this applicatin in mind. A fcus merely n technical skills misses the jy and excitement that can cme frm finding patterns and understanding them, frm seeing the true beauty f mathematics. That beauty lies in wnderfully elegant thinking that allws us t understand the infinite, explre the great symmetries(对称) f art and nature, and delight in the perfectin f an abstract wrld f ideas.
As a language, what sets maths apart is the universality f its truths— yu can becme fluent wherever yu are frm. As Auerbach memrably puts it, yu cannt d “German mathematics with a Japanese accent”. But it is the case fr maths as an art that is clsest t my heart. In researching my bk Once Upn a Prime, abut the beautiful cnnectins between mathematics and literature, I have fund many examples f mathematicians and pets praising each ther’s disciplines. This is n surprise, as mathematics is, says Auerbach, “withut exceptin, a petic art”. If we can be shwn the beauty f mathematics, we will frget t be afraid f the technical details supprting it.
28.What can be inferred frm Paragraph 1?
A.Math phbia lies in the fear f calculatin.
B.Peple scared f math made Auerbach upset.
C.Tackling math anxiety is challenging but rewarding.
D.Auerbach’s bk serves as a cure-all fr math phbia.
29.Hw des the authr develp Paragraph 2?
A.By giving a definitin.B.By making a cmparisn.
C.By illustrating an pinin.D.By presenting a phenmenn.
30.Which f the fllwing might Felix Auerbach agree with?
A.Math is a useful tl t explre the unknwn wrld.
B.Math teaching nly needs t center n its applicatin.
C.The charm f math can help reduce the math anxiety.
D.Fcus n technical skills makes peple mre anxius.
31.What is the authr’s main purpse in writing this passage?
A.T analyze math phbia’s causes.B.T explre math phbia’s slutin.
C.T illustrate the essence f math phbia.D.T clarify the cmplexity f math phbia.

This year’s Nbel Prize in chemistry hnred a real-wrld example f hw AI is helping humans tday with astnishing discveries in prtein structure that have far-reaching applicatins. This is a develpment wrth savring.
Prteins are bilgy’s lead actrs. As the Nbel cmmittee pinted ut, prteins “cntrl and drive all the chemical reactins that tgether are the basis f life.” In the human bdy, they are necessary fr the structure, functin and regulatin f tissues and rgans. At the end f the 1950s, University f Cambridge researchers Jhn Kendrew and Max Perutz successfully used a methd called X-ray crystallgraphy t prduce the first3D mdels f prteins. In the fllwing half-century, the search fr dcumenting prtein structures remained labrius.
This year’s Nbel Prize in chemistry went t three scientists wh revlutinized the field. David Baker f the University f Washingtn built entirely new kinds f prteins. Demis Hassabis and Jhn Jumper f DeepMind, a Britain-based firm that is part f Alphabet, Ggle’s parent cmpany, develped an AI and machine learning mdel that can predict the structure f prteins, decding (解码) the amin acids(氨基酸) that make up each. The mdel, AlphaFld, can d in minutes what nce tk years t vercme.
AlphaFld takes advantage f neural netwrks that can lcate patterns in enrmus amunts f data. The system was trained n the vast infrmatin in the databases f all knwn prtein structures and amin acid sequences. AlphaFld has predicted mre than200 millin prtein structures, r nearly all catalged prteins knwn t science. T design new drugs and vaccines, scientists need t knw hw a prtein lks r behaves. The AlphaFld result is just a predictin—a visual representatin f a prtein’ s expected structure— but such predictins can accelerate bimedical research.
Anyne wh has used ChatGPT knws that AI is nt always crrect. But AI will nly get better ver time. Already, the AlphaFld effrt is expanding t create accurate visualizatins f hw prteins interact with ther bimedical structures. Fr nw, AlphaFld shws that AI can supercharge existing knwledge t benefit mankind. And there will be mre t cme.
32.What des the underlined wrd “labrius” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Aimless.B.Prductive.
C.Energy-cnsuming.D.Thught-prvking.
33.What can we learn abut AlphaFld?
A.It makes use f anything but the prir infrmatin.
B.Its predictin can cntribute t bimedical research.
C.It is cllective effrts f three scientists f DeepMind.
D.Its predictin shws prtein structures multi-dimensinally.
34.What is the authr’s attitude twards the AI in bilgy?
A.Cautius.B.Dubtful.C.Dismissive.D.Apprving.
35.Which f the fllwing culd be the best title fr the text?
A.AI: a Bster f Prtein Research.
B.Prtein: the Builder f Human Life.
C.AlphaFld: the Decder f Prtein Structure.
D.Nbel Prize: a Recrder f Prtein Develpment.

由文章第二段中“Gfrth’s father is a musician and a frmer high schl band teacher, s she grew up surrunded by music.”
由最后一段戈弗思所说的话“We have t imagine the futures we want t live in, and the art we make can be ne way f ding that.(我们必须想象我们想要生活的未来,而我们创作的艺术可以是一种实现这一目标的方式)”可知,她认为艺术可以影响我们对于未来生活的设想,故选D。

第一段中提到“A hundred years ag, German physicist Felix Auerbach, disappinted at the phenmenn and hping t find ways t address it, wrte a little bk called The Fear f Mathematics and Hw t Overcme It. Maths, he said, has s much t cntribute t sciety that addressing this fear is a challenge f the highest imprtance.”
“We understand this abut writing literature. The art f creating an appealing narrative in beautiful prse is different frm the technical skill f getting the spelling and punctuatin right. The same is true with maths. It isn’t mere calculatin.
文中提到“If we can be shwn the beauty f mathematics, we will frget t be afraid f the technical details supprting it.”,即展示数学之美可以让人忘记对技术细节的恐惧,也就是有助于减少数学焦虑,故选C。
文章开篇提到“A hundred years ag, German physicist Felix Auerbach, disappinted at the phenmenn and hping t find ways t address it, wrte a little bk called The Fear f Mathematics and Hw t Overcme It.”,表明了从一开始作者就在关注数学恐惧症的解决办法。接着作者分析了人们恐惧数学的原因,“At heart, says Auerbach, it cmes dwn ta fundamental misunderstanding f what maths is.”,这为探索解决方案提供了基础认知。然后作者阐述了数学的本质,“Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art.”以及“A fcus exclusively n technical skills misses the jy and excitement that can cme frm finding patterns and understanding them, frm seeing the true beauty f mathematics. That beauty lies in wnderfully elegant thinking that allws us t understand the infinite, explre the great symmetries(对称) f art and nature, and delight in the perfectin f an abstract wrld f ideas.”,通过对数学本质的深入理解,暗示了展示数学之美可能是解决数学恐惧症的一种途径。最后作者提到“If we can be shwn the beauty f mathematics, we will frget t be afraid f the technical details supprting it.”,明确指出展示数学之美可以克服恐惧, 进一步体现了作者在探索数学恐惧症的解决方案。

再结合第三段“The mdel, AlphaFld, can d in minutes what nce tk years t vercme.”
根据第四段“T design new drugs and vaccines, scientists need t knw hw a prtein lks r behaves. The AlphaFld result is just a predictin — a visual representatin f a prtein’s expected structure — but such predictins can accelerate bimedical research.”
根据最后一段“But AI will nly get better ver time.”以及“Fr nw, AlphaFld shws that AI can supercharge existing knwledge t benefit mankind. And there will be mre t cme.”

通过本段中“S, it is imprtant that yu take care f yur mental health as well as yur physical health.”
