Messages were placed n the sticks using a variety f methds, including carving, painting r burning symbls int the wd. The markings usually cnsisted f wrdless symbls that had t be translated by the curier. This messenger was thus usually a physically fit yunger man wh had the mental harness t prperly cnvey message details.
    Message sticks functined as a srt f neutral territry between tribes. Curiers were granted safe passage and safe harbr, even if they came frm an enemy land. Smetimes, the methd f delivery cnsisted f a single curier carrying a message stick m tribe t tribe. Other methds included ne tribe began a passing prcess almst tribes, with each tribe using its wn curier t cnvey the message t the next tribe.

    Planning fr the bridge began in the 1920s when the area arund San Francisc was grwing. Peple living in the area needed anther way t get t the city besides small ferries(渡船).
    Jseph Strauss was the chief engineer fr the prject. Mr. Strauss demanded the strngest safety prtectins in the histry f bridge building. These included the first use f “hard hats” t prtect the wrkers’ heads and special glasses t prtect their eyes.
    A special safety net was suspended(挂)under the bridge. This net saved the lives f 19 men during the cnstructin, Hwever, I l ther wrkers were killed when they fell ff the bridge thrugh the net. Still, this was a new safety recrd fr the time.
    The Glden Gate Bridge pened in 1937. It extends l,280 meters acrss the water. The ttal length is 2,737 meters. It was the largest suspensin bridge(吊桥)in the wrld until 1964. That is when the Verrazan-Narrws Bridge pened in New Yrk City. Tday, the Glden Gate Bridge is the lngest suspensin bridge in the wrld.
