Althugh it has been revealed in recent years that plants are capable f seeing, hearing and smelling, they are still usually thught f as silent. But nw, fr the first time, they have been recrded making ultrasnic cries when stressed, which researchers say culd pen up a new field f precisin agriculture where farmers listen fr water-starved crps.
Itzhak Khait and his clleagues at Tel Aviv University in Israel fund that tmat and tbacc plants made cries at frequencies humans cannt hear when stressed by a lack f water r when their stem it cut.
Micrphnes placed 10 centimetres frm the plants picked up sunds in the ultrasnic range f 20 t 100 kilhertz, which the team says insects and sme mammals wuld be capable f hearing and respnding t frm as far as 5 metres away.A mth may decide against laying eggs n a plant that sunds water-stressed, the researchers suggest. Plants culd even hear that ther plants are shrt f water and react accrdingly, they speculate .
On average, drught-stressed tmat plants made 35 sunds an hur, while tbacc plants made 11. When plant stems were cut, tmat plants made an average f 25 sunds in the fllwing hur, and tbacc plants 15. Unstressed plants prduced fewer than ne sund per hur, n average.
It is even pssible t distinguish between the sunds t knw what the stress is. The researchers trained a machine-learning mdel t recgnize between the plants’ sunds and the wind, rain and ther nises f the greenhuse, crrectly identifying in mst cases whether the stress was caused by dryness r a cut, based n the sund's intensity and frequency. Water-hungry tbacc appears t make luder sunds than cut tbacc, fr example.
Enabling farmers t listen fr water-stressed plants culd“pen a new directin in the field f precisin agriculture”, the researchers suggest. They add that such an ability will be increasingly imprtant as climate change expses mre areas t drught.
“The suggestin that the sunds that drught-stressed plants make culd be used in precisin agriculture seems feasible if it is nt t cstly t set up the recrding in a field situatin,” says Anne Visscher at the ryal Btanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK.
She warns that the results can't yet be bradened ut t ther stresses, such as salt r temperature, because these may nt lead t sunds. In additin, there have been n experiments t shw whether mths r any ther animal can hear and respnd t the sunds the plants make, s that idea remains based n guesses fr nw, she says.
49. The experiment by researchers at Tel Aviv University shws that .

B. plant sunds can be heard by plants quite far away
C. humans can hear water-hungry plants crying
D mths like laying eggs n stressed plant

Lk arund during rush hur and yu might spt many yung peple, especially girls, with their phnes attached t clrful straps and slung acrss their bdies. Lately, phne strap shave taken ff as a trend, ppping up in yung peple's daily utfit vides n TikTk.
The rise f this trend is due t practicality, as mbile phnes have becme an imprtant part f daily life. Attaching yur phne t a strap is a cnvenient way t free yur hands fr ther tasks.

In Muir's view, “wmen's clthes have rarely been designed fr practicality.” They ften have n pckets r feature pckets that are t small t hld a phne. Sharing Muir's pinin, design expert Hannah Carlsn believes that wmen's fashin is designed fr beauty while menswear is made t be functinal. This reflects“ld ideas abut wmen's place and abut the mre limited scial and ecnmic cntributins they are expected t make,” Carlsn tld The New Yrk Times.
Many designers avided sewing pckets int wmen's clthes t preserve the line f a dress. By cntrast, pckets are cnsidered“a part f ding business in men's wear”, Carlsn added.
Since wmen still needed t carry essentials, the lack f pckets in their clthes led t the rise f the handbag industry. Accrding t Muir, “the phne strap is anther accessry t reap the benefits f wmen's lack f pckets.” While it may help g hands-free and add a layer f prtectin, there's an ften-verlked and far mre cst-effective slutin: clthes with deep functinal pckets.
53. What is the main reasn fr the ppularity f phne straps?
A. They are fashinable accessries.
B. They are driven by scial media trends.
C. Girls are verly dependent n mbile phnes.
D. They prvide cnvenience and a sense f security.
54. What des Ellie Muir think abut the phne strap trend?
A. It's a creative way t persnalize mbile phnes.
B. It highlights the shrtcmings f wmen’ s clthing.
C. It encurages gender equality in fashin.
D. It ffers wmen a cst-effective slutin.
55. Accrding t Hannah Carlsn, what des the design f wmen's and men's clthing reflect?
A Wmen's clthing is mre fashinable.
B. Men's clthing lacks variety in design.
C. Wmen's rles are cnsidered secndary.
D Men's ecnmic status is vervalued.
56. What slutin des Muir suggest?
A. Buying smaller phnes.B. Using larger handbags.
C. Carrying fewer items.D. Redesigning wmen's clthes.
