Nw, she says:“Whenever I get scared, I think f myself n tp f that muntain, lking ut ver Gky Lakes— and beynd thse, Qmlangma. I say, if yu can d that, yu can d anything.”
Since the backpacking adventure, she understands mre fully the rle that wrk has played in her life fr s lng. “Wrk was reliable. I knew what I was ding. I'm a wrkahlic t this day,” she says. “I' ve just realized in this yga retreat that I have t let g f all that. The penny is drpping fr me nw.”

Deserts culd be the best places n Earth fr harvesting slar pwer. They are spacius, relatively flat, and never shrt f sunlight. S researchers imagine it might be pssible t transfrm the wrld's largest desert, the Sahara, int a large slar farm, capable f meeting fur times the wrld's current energy demand.
While the black surfaces f slar panels absrb mst f the sunlight that reaches them, nly arund15% f that incming energy gets turned int electricity. The rest is returned t the envirnment as heat, affecting the climate. If these effects were nly lcal, they might nt matter in a thinly ppulated desert. But the area f the installatins(安装) in the Sahara wuld be vast, cvering thusands f square miles. Heat released frm an area this size will be redistributed by the flw f air in the atmsphere, having reginal and even glbal effects n the climate.
A 2018 study used a climate mdel t assess the effects f building massive slar farms in the Sahara. The mdel revealed that when the size f the slar farm reaches 20% f the ttal area f the Sahara, the heat released by the darker slar panels creates a big temperature difference between the land and the surrunding ceans that ultimately lwers surface air pressure and causes wet air t rise and cndense (凝结) int raindrps. With mre rainfall, plants grw and the desert reflects less f the sun's energy since vegetatin absrbs light better than sand and sil. With mre plants present, mre water is evaprated (蒸发), creating a better envirnment that causes vegetatin t spread.
S, a large slar farm culd generate enugh energy and at the same time turn ne f the mst abminable envirnments n Earth int a habitable place. Sunds perfect, right? Nt quite. In a recent study, we used an advanced Earth system mdel t clsely examine hw Saharan slar farms interact with the climate. It shwed there culd be unintended effects n remte parts f the land and cean.
We are nly beginning t understand the ptential cnsequences f establishing massive slar farms in deserts. Slutins like this may help sciety reduce the use f fssil (化石) energy, but Earth system studies like urs underscre the imprtance f cnsidering the numerus cupled respnses f the atmsphere, ceans, and land surface when examining their benefits and risks.
28. What can be learned abut slar farms?
A. They can affect the lcal climate.
B. They are mainly lcated in deserts.
C. They can make the best use f incming energy.
D. They satisfy the wrld's current energy demand.
29. What will happen t the Sahara if 20% f the Sahara is cvered with slar panels accrding t the 2018 study?
A. It might reflect mre sunlight.
B. It might becme greener.
C. Its surface air pressure will increase.
D. Its temperature difference between day and night will decrease.
30. What des the underlined wrd“abminable” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Dynamic. B. Sensitive.
C. Unpleasant. D. Cmpetitive.
31. What des the authr think f turning the Sahara int a slar farm?
A. It is an impssible task.
B. It calls fr mre cnsideratin.
C. It will d mre gd than harm.
D. It might be the slutin t fssil fuel pllutin.
D
The measurement f bld pressure ges back almst three centuries, leading t the prcedure that we all knw and that ur family dctr perfrms when we have check-ups: A cuff (袖口) ges arund ur arm, which is first inflated (膨胀), and then deflated (放气), in a cntrlled manner, t determine ur maximum and minimum bld pressure.
But the use f inflatable-cuff bld pressure mnitrs has sme disadvantages. Fr ne thing, unless peple have hme mnitrs, they must g t a chemistry shp, dctr's ffice r health center t learn what their bld pressure is. Anther barrier is that repeated inflatin and deflatin f the cuff can cause difficulties when, fr example, a patient is in the hspital and needs frequent bld pressure mnitring. And the last ne is that since cuffs dn't allw cntinuus measurement f bld pressure, they' re nly prviding a measurement at a specific mment.
Tday, a new generatin f bld pressure measuring devices have been develped and their aim is t make it easier t judge high bld pressure. Unlike traditinal devices, they d withut the arm cuff and ffer bld pressure values n demand. Users just press their finger n a sensr n a watch and ring.
The varius cuffless measuring devices are based n methds that, instead f directly determining bld pressure, they use sensrs t capture varius indirect signals. These signals are prcessed by different sets f mathematical prcedures t btain the bld pressure values. It is like inferring fever by measuring an increase in heart beat and sweating instead f using a thermmeter (体温计), r divining the result f a sccer match frm utside the stadium by listening t the screams f the sccer fans.
The develpment f devices fr measuring bld pressure withut a bld pressure cuff is prgressing rapidly, but that desn't mean they are ready t be used t make diagnstic and treatment decisins. “The rad t clinical applicatin may be sme day in the near future, but nt nw,” says Avli, a bimedical engineer.
32. Hw many drawbacks f inflatable-cuff bld pressure mnitrs are mentined in the text?
A. Tw. B. Three. C. Fur. D. Five.
33. What des the underlined wrd“divining” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Changing. B. Describing.
C. Guessing. D. Remembering.
34. What's the furth paragraph mainly abut?
A. The wrking principle f cuffless measuring devices.
B. The different methds fr setting mathematical prcedures.
C. The way f cuffless measuring devices t measure direct signals.
D. The cnnectin between inferring fever and measuring bld pressure.
35. What will the writer mst prbably talk abut n cuffless measuring devices next?
A. The issue f mass-prducing them.
B. The prcessing techniques f them.
C. The cmpetitive intensity amng their prducers.
D. The reasns fr them nt being used in the medical wrld currently.
