As yu wander the shps this hliday seasn, yu’re likely t encunter the number 9 everywhere. There’s $4.99 fr that bx f Christmas candy, $299 fr that TV, and $99.99 fr thse stylish headphnes.
The trick f using 9s t price items is s cmmn that we rarely think abut it, and if we d, it’s likely t pity the pr suckers (易上当受骗的人) wh dn’t knw $99.99 is the same as $100.
But the truth is yu’ve prbably been tripped up by 9-ending prices withut even realizing it. A number f researchers have fund smething surprising abut 9-ending prices. It’s nt just that $9.99 isn’t a better deal than $10; it’s that it’s ften actually a bad deal.
“The 9-ending des sme magic t us,” said Daniel Levy, an ecnmics prfessr. In a 2021 paper, Mr. Levy and Avichai Snir f Netanya Academic Cllege fund that when items’ prices ended in 9, they were n average 18% higher than when thse same items’ prices had different endings. The finding held acrss a range f items such as cheese, crackers, bttled juices, canned sups, dish detergents, painkillers, cigarettes and s n.
The strategy, called “just belw” pricing, as in “$9.99 is just belw $10,” as well as psychlgical, dd r charm pricing, has been arund s lng that n ne is sure f its rigins. One thery is that the use f the cash register, which was riginally marketed as a device t stp emplyees frm stealing.
Rbert Schindler, a marketing prfessr at the Rutgers Schl f Business-Camden, is skeptical f the cash-register thery because he’s fund Macy’s newspaper advertisements as early as 1880 tuting prices like$.99 and $1.99 and prclaiming them “psitively the best bargains ever ffered, and cannt be equaled by any ther huse:” He believes the rigin was always the psychlgical trick.
Mr. Schindler, 15 years ag, prpsed the existence f a “99-meaning paradx”: Cnsumers strngly assciate prices ending in .99 as being lw, but that this cannt be due t a crrelatin(相关性) between the99-ending and lw prices because such a crrelatin desn’t exist.
Yet, if cnsumers knw by nw that $9. 99 is basically the same as $10, why d retailers, wh after all put serius thught int their pricing strategy, still use it?
24. Why d cnsumers tend t give little thught t 9-ending prices?
A. They are nt the pr suckers.
B. They think it’s just a simple trick.
C. They are s used t such prices.
D. They think $99.99 is the same as $100.
25. What have the researchers fund?
A. If the price ended in .99, yu prbably verpaid.
B. $9.99 isn’t a wrse deal in the least.
C. Peple preferred t chse items with n 9-ending prices.
D. Different endings f prices make n difference t cnsumers.
26. What des the underlined wrd “tuting” mean?
A. Rising.B. Advertising.C. Changing.D. Cllapsing.
27. What might be discussed further in the cming paragraph?
A. Hw peple can avid being fled.
B. What ther theries there were in histry.
C. What kind f prducts peple shuld purchase.
D. Why such a pricing strategy still exists nwadays.

Last April ver 21,000 fans were at Wembley Arena in Lndn, shuting and cheering. Thusands mre were watching nline. But this wasn’t a ftball, basketball r tennis match. It was esprts, r cmpetitive cmputer gaming. The prize mney fr the winners: 3 millin.
Millins f peple in the UK play esprts fr fun. Sme f them have made it their full-time jb. It’s nt easy being a prfessinal gamer, thugh. As well as playing esprts, many peple in the UK like watching them t. Esprts can be exciting t watch: just like traditinal sprts, there are clse games, last-minute victries and amazing perfrmances. Smetimes nline viewers can interact with games.
Despite the wrd “esprts” having “sprts” right in the name, there’ s still a frequently asked questin: are esprts really sprts? Sme say n. While they have a lt f similarities t traditinal sprts like ftball, sccer, and basketball, it’s appearing t miss ne thing: mvement. Physical activity. Esprts players dn’t need t run, jump, thrw r d big physical actin. At the mment, the UK gvernment regards esprts as kinds f games, nt as sprts.
But thers say yes: esprts are sprts. Players d need sme physical skills, especially hand-eye cperatin, reflexes, accuracy and timing. If darts(飞镖), snker and shting are seen as sprts, then perhaps esprts shuld be t. In fact, China and Suth Krea d see esprts as sprts. And esprt is already an fficial medal sprts in the Asian Games since 2022.
Fr many esprts fans and players, thugh, the mst imprtant thing is that esprts are grwing in ppularity and imprtance. If esprts are nt as imprtant as sprts nw, they definitely will be in the near future.

The researchers said the study was, in part, carried ut t lay t rest the questin f whether ne f the prfessins had the intellectual upper hand-a tensin made famus by a cmedy shw in which a cnfident neursurgen is slapped dwn by an aerspace expert wh says, “Brain surgery... it’s nt exactly rcket science, is it?”
Hwever, the team fund few differences between the cgnitive abilities f aerspace engineers and neurscientists, althugh the results suggest the frmer had higher scres fr attentin and mental cntrl— such as turning bjects in ne’s head—— while neursurgens shwed higher scres in semantic (语义的) prblem slving— such as definitins f rare wrds.
“Essentially what we think it shws is that everyne has a range f skills, sme peple are better at sme things and ther peple are better at ther things, and it is very difficult t be better in everything acrss the bard,” said Aswin Chari, an authr f the study.

What Des Yur Handwriting Say Abut Yu?

A. Accrding t graphlgy, handwriting is nthing but an expressin f the subcnscius mind.
B. Gd and bad can be interpreted differently, f curse.
C. As lng as yur writing satisfies its purpse, yu’re in business.
