What a magnificent hrse! Even after mre than a thusand years have passed, we can still feel the pwer within its burning eyes, bared teeth and kicking hves, Night-Shining White, nw kept in New Yrk’s Metrplitan Museum f Art, is regarded as ne f the mst significant hrse paintings in the histry f Chinese art. Its artist, Han Gan, is knwn fr his skill in capturing nt nly the physical features f the animal, but als its inner spirit and strength.

Brn int a pr family in the early Tang Dynasty, the yung Han Gan had t help supprt his family by wrking in a lcal wine shp. His artistic talent was discvered by accident when he was sent t the pet Wang Wei’s huse t cllect payment fr sme wine. While waiting at the gate, Han Gan used a stick t draw pictures in the dirt and was seen by the pet himself. Wang Wei decided t spnsr the yung man t study painting and recmmended him t a master. Due t Han Gan’s natural talent and years f hard wrk, he was eventually chsen t serve Emperr Xuanzng in the ryal palace.
The Tang emperrs were very fnd f hrses. This meant that the animal was a frequent subject fr artists. At that time, the mst cmmn way t study hrse painting was by cpying the wrks f previus painters. Han Gan’s methd, hwever, was different – he bserved the animal itself. He was a frequent visitr t the ryal stables and even mved in t live with the stable wrkers fr quite sme time.
The hrses, whether resting r n the mve, ffered him plenty f inspiratin. The mre time he spent bserving these animals, the mre his understanding f them grew. Day after day, Han Gan painted the hrses, his brush presenting every detail that he saw with his wn eyes.
It is said that when the Emperr asked Han Gan t take a master f hrse painting as his teacher, the artist replied, “I have my wn teachers, Yur Majesty. All the hrses in yur stables are my very teachers.”
Thse wh saw Han Gan’s hrse paintings all sang high praises fr his unique skill, saying that his hrses “culd gallp ff the paper”. Even Su Shi, the famus pet f the Sng Dynasty, expressed his admiratin fr Han Gan as a master f hrse painting with the wrds, “The hrses painted by Han Gan are real hrses.”
