Abut 100 years ag, the glacier cvered almst 6 square miles f a muntainside in western Iceland and measured mre than 160 feet thick. A plaque has been installed at the site f the frmer glacier, which reads：“In the next 200 years, all ur glaciers are expected t fllw the same path. This mnument is t acknwledge that we knw what is happening and what needs t be dne. “ Only yu knw if we did it. ” The plaque bears the inscriptin “ A letter t the future ” and is intended t raise awareness f the decline f glaciers and the effects f climate change.
It is als labelled “415 ppm C02”，referring t the recrd level f carbn dixide measured in the atmsphere in May， In 1890，the glacier ice cvered 16 square kilmeters but by 2012，it measured just 0. 7 square kilmeters, accrding t a reprt frm the University f Iceland in 2017. “In 2014，we made the decisin that this was n lnger a living glacier. It was nly dead ice, and it was nt mving,” Oddur Sigurdssn, a glacilgist f the Icelandic Meterlgical Office, tld AFP. Accrding t a study published by the Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature (IUCN) in April，nearly half f the wrld’s heritage sites culd lse their glaciers by 2100 if greenhuse gas emissins cntinue at the current rate.
Sigurdssn said he feared “that nthing can be dne t stp it”. Residents reminisced abut drinking pure water thusands f years ld frm Okjkull. “The symblic death f a glacier is a warning t us, and we need actin，” said the frmer Irish President Mary Rbinsn. “We see the cnsequences f the climate crisis，” Icelandic Prime Minister Katrin Jakbsdttir said. “We have n time t lse. ”
