Self-cntrl is a skill that children need t succeed in schl, scially and emtinally. The develpment f self-cntrl begins at birth and cntinues thrughut ur lives. As babies, we have little r n cntrl ver ur behavirs and emtins, but as we get lder, with the help f parents r caregivers, we learn hw t take turns, hw t pay attentin in class, stick t a challenging task, and restrain(制止) frm hitting anther child. These abilities cntinue t develp in ur childhd and then yuthhd. Als, it is clear that being impulsive(易冲动的) can have bad effects n children, causing interpersnal prblems, pr physical health, and psychiatric disrders.
Therefre, by learning self-cntrl, children can make right decisins and respnd t situatins in psitive ways. One f the effective strategies, when helping children develp self-cntrl abilities, is t select develpmentally prper tasks. Try setting up simple gals first, where success is expected, befre mving nt the next gal. Fr preschlers, gals might include nt interrupting r nt fighting n the playgrund. Fr early elementary schl students, right gals might be fllwing bedtime rules.
Hwever, it’s nt enugh t set up simple gals, because fr children f the same age, there are still sme differences in the develpment f self-cntrl abilities. Sme general strategies ften help them learn right self-cntrl behavirs.
•Take a break
Encurage children t take a break r “time in” whenever they feel dwn, annyed r angry. Stepping away frm an upsetting situatin can help a child calm dwn.
•Teach and prvide attentin
Paying attentin is a skill that can be taught. Encurage children t resist interrupting by learning t bserve thers withut talking, s they can jin in easily. Make sure t prvide children with attentin at times s they dn’t feel ignred and therefre are unlikely t interrupt.
•Use prper rewards(奖励)
In rder t develp psitive behavirs, children need frequently psitive feedback. Praise and cnsistent feedback can be highly rewarding fr yung children. It is imprtant t let a child knw what a desired behavir is.

Think back t when yu were in a classrm, and the teacher set a difficult prblem. Which f the tw fllwing respnses is clser t the way yu reacted?
The psychlgist (心理学家) Carl Dweck f Stanfrd University, did a test by giving sme ten-year-ld children prblems that were a little hard fr them. Grup 1, wh chse B, reacted psitively, said they lved challenges and understd that their abilities culd be develped. Prfessr Dweck says they had a “grwth mindset (思维模式)”. And they cared mre abut what they can achieve in the future. Hwever, grup 2, wh chse A, felt that their intelligence was being judged and they had failed. They had a “fixed mindset” and were unable t imagine imprving. Sme f these children said they might cheat in the future and lk fr smene wh were wrse than them, just t make themselves feel gd.
Prfessr Dweck believes that there is a prblem in educatin. Fr years, teachers have praised children fr their intelligence and talent. But this makes them get hurt easily frm failure. They becme perfrmance-riented (i. e. interested in getting high grades, nt learning). The right way, accrding t Dweck, is t praise the prcess that children are invlved in: making an effrt, using learning strategies (策略) and imprving. This way they will becme mastery-riented (i. e. interested in getting better at smething) and will achieve mre.
Psychlgists have been testing these theries. Students were taught that if they left their cmfrt zne and learned smething new and difficult, they’d be mre intelligent. These students made faster prgress than a cntrl grup. In anther study, children frm an underperfrming (不佳的) schl had trainings n their grwth mindset techniques fr a year.
The results were staggering. They came tp in tests, beating children frm much better schls. These children had previusly felt that making an effrt was a sign f stupidity, but they came t see it as the key t learning.
S, back t ur riginal questin, if yu answered B, well dne—yu already have a grwth mindset. If A, dn’t wrry: everyne is able t becme mastery-riented with a little effrt and self-awareness.
