Paraphrase(释义): We might nt enjy these jkes as much as the peple wh first heard them did, but the authrs understd that humur culd help peple understand sensitive r emtinal issues as well as make them laugh.
Language Pints: Imprtant sentences
本句中while引导让步状语从句,while引导让步状语从句时通常用于句首,意为in spite f the fact that。
While these same jkes might nt be as funny t us nw as they were then, their authrs understd that humur culd nt nly entertain but culd als thrw new light nsensitive r emtive issues.
While I am willing t help, I d nt have much time available.
2. All yu have t d is crss ut the wrng wrds.
Paraphrase(释义): All yu have t d is delete the wrng wrds.
He has nthing t d but watch TV all day lng.
②He did nthing but piddle away the time.
The nly thing (that) he can d is wait.
3. When Twain replied that he didn’t, the barber tld him that if he wanted t g t the event he wuld have t stand, as there were n seats left in the theatre.
Paraphrase(释义): When Twain replied that he didn’t have a ticket, the barber tld him that he wuld have t stand if he wanted t g t the lecture, fr there were n seats left in the theatre.
When Twain replied that he didn’t, the barber tld him that if he wanted t g t the event he wuld have t stand, as there were n seats left in the theatre.
4. Once, having been invited t dinner at a university, he was put n the spt when the president suddenly asked him t give a speech.
Paraphrase(释义): When he was nce invited t dinner at a university, he felt embarrassed when the president suddenly asked him t give a speech.
Having failed twice, he didn’t want t try again.② Having been tld many times, Tm made the same mistake again.
5. Then alng came a tiger.
Paraphrase(释义): Then a tiger came alng.
① 当here, there, nw, then, thus等副词置于句首,谓语动词用be, cme, g, lie, run等表示状态或移动的动词时,句子需要用完全倒装语序,其形式为:There / Here +谓语 + 主语。
例如:Then came the bus.
例如:Out rushed the children.
例如:Here I am. Away they went.
Up went the arrw int the air.
Under the table sleeps a white cat.
There ges the bell fr break.
