The easy slutin
Prjects that reuse grey water range frm the prfessinal t the DIY: a laundry-t-landscape system that can be made ver a weekend with a few hundred dllars in parts. Install a diverter valve (分流阀) n the pipe f yur washing machine. After a cycle, guide used water ut thrugh a PVC pipe t plantings.
Strage and use
Use a grey water prject t rethink yur landscape, suggests Greywater Actin c-funder Laura Allen. Earhart had truble shrtly after takeff. The weather was strmy, s she had t fly at apprximately 3,000 meters. Ging this high the plane used up gas quickly.
After abut 20 hurs, Earhart and Nnan apprached Hwland Island. The island was nly abut a hundred kilmeters away at this pint, but the bright sun was shining in their faces, s they culdn’t see it. Near Hwland, a ship—the Itasca—was waiting. Earhart cntacted the ship: “Gas is lw,” she said. The Itasca tried t maintain cntact with her, but it gt n respnse. Finally, the Itasca called fr help. Peple searched fr Earhart and Nnan fr days. Despite great effrts, they fund nthing.
What happened t Amelia Earhart? N ne knws fr sure. During the flight, she likely headed in the wrng directin because the sun was bright and it was hard t see. Perhaps she and Nnan gt lst smewhere ver the Pacific. Sn after, her plane ran ut f gas, and she crashed int the sea. Anther idea is that Earhart might have landed n a nearby, uninhabited island called Nikumarr, where she later died. Researchers recently brught bne-sniffing dgs t the island, thugh, and n human bnes were fund. A mre extreme thery is that Earhart flew the plane t Marshall Island and later secretly returned t the United States under a new name.
The first thery seems mst likely. Hwever, nne f these ideas has been prven. Tday, peple are still investigating Earhart’s and Nnan’s disappearance. Whatever happened, Earhart prbably died as she wished, “When I g,” she nce said, “I’d like best t g in my plane.”

Seafd that never sees the sea
Althugh 80% f the wrld’s seafd cmes frm marine harvests, there is a majr shift underway tward aquaculture (水产业) nw. Nearly 40% f salmn marketed tday is raised in fish farms, cmpared with 6% a decade ag. Almst 35% f all ysters are prduced in farm envirnments, alng with 65% f freshwater fish. “The fact that wrld seafd supplies cntinue t increase at all is due almst entirely t the phenmenal grwth in aquaculture,” says Anne Platt McGinn, a research assciate at the Wrldwatch Institute.
Bitechnlgy is cntributing t high-yield aquaculture thrugh transgenics—the transfer f genes frm ne species t anther. Researchers intrduce advantageus genetic features int fish, creating strnger stcks. Fr example, sme species f fish have a prtein that allws them t live in Arctic waters. By transplanting this “anti-freeze” gene int ther species, researchers have created mre fish that can survive in extremely cld water. Bitechnlgists are attempting t imprve a wide range f genetic features in fish used fr aquaculture, develping fish that are larger and faster-grwing, mre efficient in changing feed int muscle, mre tlerant f lw xygen levels in water, and better able t resist disease.
While aquaculture prduces a reliable surce f prtein, there are a lt f envirnmental prblems in the industry, claims McGinn. Perhaps the biggest cncern is water pllutin. Fish waste and uneaten fd accumulate at farm sites and can flat directly dwnstream int water supplies. McGinn charges that aquaculture als uses resurces inefficiently. Fish farms need prtein feed, and abut 17% f cean fish, an verharvested wild resurce, becmes fd fr farm-raised fish. “An estimated five kilgrams f ceanic fish reduced int fish meal are required t raise ne kilgram f farmed cean fish r shrimp, representing a large net prtein lss,” says McGinn.
Fish farming des nt have t be an inefficient r plluting industry. McGinn predicts that many cnsumers will chse sustainably prduced fish in the future, just as they prefer dlphin-free tuna (金枪鱼) tday.
8.What can we infer frm Paragraph 1?
A.Nearly 80% f the wrld’s seafd is surced frm marine harvests.
B.The aquaculture underges minr changes within the recent decade.
C.Mst f the seafd peple cnsume are supplied by fish farms tday.
D.The increase in aquaculture brings abut the rise f wrld seafd supplies.
9.Hw d bitechnlgists prmte the high prductin f seafd?
A.They create even larger and faster-grwing fish.
B.They make use f the technlgy f transgenics.
C.They intrduce a variety f genetic features in fish.
D.They transplant “anti-freeze” genes int ther species.
10.What is ne f the prblems caused by present seafd industry?
A.It fails t prvide a reliable surce f prtein.
B.It reduces the wild resurce fr farm-raised fish.
C.It leads t the ver-cnsumptin f ceanic fish.
D.It causes great water pllutin dwnstream nly.
11.What des McGinn mean by saying “just as they prefer dlphin-free tuna tday”?
A.Aquaculture is a very serius plluting industry.
B.Fish farming can be imprved t be ec-friendly.
C.Mst cnsumers are against the present fish farming.
D.Dlphin-free tuna is cnsumers’ favurite fish meal.
If yu think search engines pwered by artificial intelligence prvide yu with useful-sunding answers, it is mre likely that yu are wrng, researchers have fund. “In these current systems, accuracy is negatively related t perceived usefulness,” says Nelsn at Stanfrd University. “The things that lk better end up being wrse.”
Micrsft is just ne f many cmpanies ffering AI-pwered search tls, which generate results in digestible paragraphs that cite ther websites rather than simply returning a list f links. T investigate these tls, Nelsn and his clleagues fed 1,450 ppular searches int Bing Chat and ther such tls, including NeevaAI and PerplexityAI. These questins included examples such as “What are the latest technlgical discveries?” The team then asked peple t rate whether the cntent used as citatins (引文) in the results actually supprted the statements made by the AIs.
Accrding t this assessment, nly 75% f citatins supprted the sentences they were attached t, and nly 52% f statements were supprted by citatins at all. “That means the rest either have n citatins, r they are just wrng.” says Nelsn.
The researchers als asked peple t rate fluency f respnse and hw useful they seemed, and discvered a negative crrespndence. Fr every 0.1 increase in fluency ratings, the precisin decreased by 10.6%.
Aravind Srinlvas, a c-funder f PerplexityAI, says he welcmes the study. “The results are similar t the wrk the cmpany has cnducted, and imprvements are pssible. Never judge an upcming technlgy by what it is tday, but rather by the ptential fr what it can be in the future,” he says. But Nelsn isn’t sure whether AI-pwered search is the right apprach. “I’m a little mixed n whether such search tls shuld be rlled int systems,” he says.
12.Hw did Nelsn’s team examine the AI-pwered search tls?
A.They interviewed different experts n this field.
B.They invited Bing Chat users t rate the cntent.
C.They cmpared the results f different cmpanies.
D.They input cmmnly searched questins int the tls.
13.Why did Nelsn’s team cnduct the study n AI-pwered engines?
A.T ffer surces and citatins.B.T demnstrate their ptentials.
C.T highlight their psitive aspects.D.T test their accuracy and fluency.
14.What is Aravind Srinlvas’s attitude twards the future f AI-pwered engines?
A.Optimistic.B.Intlerant.C.Skeptical.D.Wait-and-see.
15.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
