When I was in eighth grade, my English teacher Jan annunced that we were ging t learn abut prepsitinal phrases (介词短语). “There are ver frty cmmnly used prepsitins,” she cntinued. “And everyne must memrize them.” Jan recited (背诵) these prepsitins as easily as saying the days f the week. She said yu wuld find grammar easy when yu memrized them. I tried my best and finally succeeded. Then, grammar became easier, just as Jan had prmised.
In additin t singing the prepsitins, she shared ther useful language pints. I still remembered her catchy phrase: “Gd better best, never let it rest, until yur gd is better, and yur better is best.”
After high schl, I went t cllege, majring (主修) in—my parents culdn’t believe it—English! In a creative writing class in my junir year, I recited the prepsitins fr my prfessr and classmates. I explained hw my eighth grade teacher, Jan, had ften said that a strategically placed prepsitinal phrase culd add depth and variety t sentences. Impressed, my prfessr asked fr a cpy f Jan’s list and ther tricks f the trade that I remembered.
After graduating frm cllege, I landed a jb teaching eighth grade English. I tried best the way Jan had t make grammar easy. I started the unit with prepsitins cming first. Memrizatin was the imprtant part. Befre lng, the students were singing the prepsitins t their favrite tunes. One year, since it was near Christmas, we all sang the prepsitins t “Jingle Bells”.
I als required students t. recite the prepsitins in ten secnds r less. If yu thught that was impssible, then yu didn’t knw eighth graders. They welcmed any truble, and with n hmewrk as a mtivatr, they gt right dwn t business. I pulled ut a stpwatch and timed the students daily t judge their prgress; 21, 16, 12, then bing, 10 secnds!
I taught eighth grade English fr thirty-eight years. Lking back, teaching English was a tugh but wrthwhile jb, and I lved it every day.

We may be living in the digital age, but reading bks is still a big part f grwing up. When they’re in primary schl, children read bks that really challenge them. But nce they reach secndary schl, the level f difficulty desn’t change much. Secndary schl students tend t read bks which are als read by upper primary students. They are nt challenging themselves enugh.
T discver these trends, I analyzed data cllected by Accelerated Reader (AR) sftware, which asks pupils t check their understanding f the bks they’ve chsen t read. The difficulty — which I call “readability”.
I als created tw lists f bks: ne fr the bks that mst secndary pupils had chsen t read, and anther fr the bks they had vted as their favrites. Accrding t the readability, these students’ favrite bks tend t be much mre advanced than the ther bks they chse, but they culd still understand them. The rest f the bks mst ften chsen by them are quite simple.
Yu might think that students wh read harder bks might make mre mistakes and understand them less well. But students’ quality f cmprehensin des nt depend n the difficulty f the bk, n matter what year f secndary schl they’re in. Having an interest is the mst bvius factr here — if yu like the bk, yu try hard t really understand it.
As children becme teenagers, they listen less t advice frm adults and mre t advice frm kids f their age. S, rather than trying t lecture yung peple n the benefits f Jane Austen, we shuld make the nature f the prblem clear t them. Students shuld challenge each ther t read mre difficult bks. Adults culd help by setting up nticebards r rganizing scial media netwrks fr yung peple t share their recmmendatins. And teachers can lend a hand by setting aside time fr reading in schl. Yung peple will realize the prblems that cme when they dn’t challenge themselves t read difficult bks.

B.Secndary schl students seldm read tugh bks
C.Children’s reading interest tends t decrease as they grw up
D.Primary students have difficulty chsing gd reading materials

B.shw the average time children spend n reading
C.find ut the causes f children’s reading difficulties
D.make clear the difficulty levels f bks read by children
48.What can we infer abut secndary schl students frm the readability scres?
A.They find sme advanced bks interesting
B.They ften make mistakes during advanced reading
C.They prefer t read bks recmmended by their parents
D.They can hardly imprve their scres n reading cmprehensin
49.Accrding t Paragraph 4, what is vital fr imprving reading cmprehensin?
A.Basic knwledge
B.Reading skills
C.Mtivatin
D.Instructin
50.What des the authr want t express in the last paragraph?
A.Designing relatively difficult textbks is necessary
B.Imprving students’ reading is a shared respnsibility
C.Advanced technlgy shuld be used in reading reaching
D.Students shuld be encuraged t read mre literary wrks
