Can Indr Plants Really Purify (净化) the Air?
Plants are very imprtant t human life. Thrugh phtsynthesis (光合作用), they transfrm carbn dixide int fresh xygen. They 1 (believe) t remve txins (毒素) frm the air we breathe — but is this true?
One famus NASA experiment 2 (publish) in 1989 has fund indr plants can clean the air by remving pllutants 3 cause cancer. Later research has fund sil micr-rganisms in the ptted plant als 4 (play) a part in cleaning indr air.
Based n this research, sme scientists say huse plants are effective natural air purifiers, and the bigger and leafier the plant, the better. 5 , hwever, say the evidence that plants can effectively accmplish this feat (功绩) is far frm cnclusive.
“There are n definitive studies t shw that 6 (have) indr plants can significantly increase the air quality in yur hme,” Accrding t Luz Claudi, a prfessr f envirnmental medicine and public health. “There’s n questin that plants are capable f remving vlatile (易挥发的) chemical txins frm the air under labratry cnditins,” says Claudi. But in yur hme r ffice space, the idea that putting a few plants tgether 7 purify yur air desn’t have much hard science t supprt it.
Mst research effrts s far, including the NASA study, placed indr plants in small, sealed envirnments t assess hw much air-purifying pwer they have. “But thse studies aren’t really applicable t what happens in huse, 8 in many cases, the air in yur hme cmpletely turns ver — that is, exchanges places with utdr air — nce every hur. In mst instances, air exchange with the utside has a 9 (great) effect n indr air quality than plants.” says Stanley Kays, a prfessr f hrticulture (园艺学).
Disappinted as many peple may be by what Kays said, the prfessr als believes 10 huse plants are beneficial. Studies have shwn plants can knck ut stress and make peple feel happier. Mre research shws spending time arund nature has a psitive effect n a persn’s md and energy levels.
Sectin B
Directins: Fill in each blank with a prper wrd chsen frm the bx. Each wrd can be used nly nce. Nte that there is ne wrd mre than yu need.
When Rbert Feliz came t the United States frm the Dminican Republic, he knew nly a few wrds f English. Educatin sn became a(n) 11 . “I culdn’t understand anything,” he said. He 12 frm his teachers, came hme in tears, and thught abut drpping ut.
Then Mrs. Malave, a bilingual educatr, began t wrk with him while teaching him math and science in his 13 Spanish. “She helped me stay smart while teaching me English,” he said. Given the chance t demnstrate his ability, he 14 cnfidence and began t succeed in schl.
Tday, he is a(n) 15 dctr, runs his wn clinic, and wrks with several hspitals. Every day, he uses the language and academic skills he 16 thrugh bilingual educatin t treat his patients.
Rbert’s stry is just ne f 17 success stries. Research has shwn that bilingual educatin is the mst 18 way bth t teach children English and ensure that they succeed academically. In Arizna and Texas, bilingual students 19 utperfrm their peers in mnlingual prgrams. Calexic, Califrnia, implemented bilingual educatin, and nw has drput rates that are less than half the state average and cllege 20 rates f mre than 90%. In El Pas, bilingual educatin prgrams have helped raise student scres frm the lwest in Texas t amng the highest in the natin.
II.Reading Cmprehensin (共45分。 21-35每题1分;36-50每题2分)
Sectin A
Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passage there are fur wrds r phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the wrd r phrase that best fits the cntext
Shuld yu listen t music when yu wrk?
D yu like t listen t music when yu wrk?
Ask this questin at a party, and yu’ll prbably get 21 respnses. Sme will say they lve it, claiming that it imprves their perfrmance; thers will say they find it distracting (分散注意力的) and cannt wrk 22 with music playing in the backgrund.
Interestingly enugh, ur research has fund that bth f these viewpints can be true. It just 23 n what srt f wrk yu’re ding.
In a recent study, we brught participants int ur lab t perfrm a variety f tasks. They included a(n) 24 task-searching thrugh wrd lists and crssing ut wrds cntaining the letter “a” and a mre difficult task—memrizing wrd pairs and 25 wrd t its partner. Sme participants cmpleted all f the tasks in silence, 26 thers cmpleted the tasks with instrumental music that was cither lud r sft, and either simple r cmplex, the latter meaning music with mre instruments being played. Several key findings 27 frm ur study.
We fund that participants wh listened t simple music r n music perfrmed abut the same n the easy task. Hwever, participants wh listened t 28 music perfrmed best n the easy task.
On the cntrary, participants perfrmed wrse n the mre difficult task when they listened t any music, regardless f cmplexity r vlume, cmpared t thse wh didn’t listen t any music.
Hw shuld we 29 these findings?
We suggest that peple have limited mental resurces frm which bth 30 and tasks can draw. We can becme 31 and ur minds may wander when these resurces are nt fully used. But we als can becme ver-excited and 32 when these resurces are used up.
Nt surprisingly, we typically need t use fewer f ur mental resurces when we perfrm easy tasks, whereas demanding tasks require mre brainpwer. Hwever, because we might be less 33 during easier tasks, there’s a greater risk f drifting ff. Music might give us the extra 34 we need t vercme the mntny (单调). Hwever, difficult tasks already demand lt f ur resurces. Listening t music can becme t much.
S best 35 shuld appear when we strike “sweet spt,” which may depend n the type f music and the type f task.
