Recently, I was fortunate to spend a good part of a week immersed in the wilderness, following the teachings of my father from my childhood. Ever since I was 10, my sister, father, and I would load up his canoe (独木舟) with supplies and venture into the heart of Algonquin Park. There were years when I ignored the call of Algonquin, caught up in the busyness of life — graduate school, and raising young children. It all felt overwhelming. But as time passed, my children grew older, and the call of Algonquin grew louder. With the support of my family, I finally heeded that call again, and started planning to take part in one of our family trips there. My family’s expertise in the outdoors has been invaluable for such trips. My sister, a teacher, carefully plans our trips while my dad, a skilled outdoorsman, effortlessly handles tasks like setting up camp and preparing meals. And my husband is really strong and good at moving things around. But, as the trip got closer, my husband suddenly hurt his leg. And suddenly, I was faced with managing the first part of the trip as the only adult. Could I drive my daughters, alone, to Algonquin’s remote north boundary to meet my dad and stepmom? Could I steer (驾驶) the canoe? Could I carry the canoe?I had driven across Canada, alone, in my twenties, well before Google Maps. I was pretty sure I could steer if we kept to smaller lakes that were less likely to become windswept. But I feared carrying a canoe. Plus, lifting it onto my shoulders seemed impossible for someone of my strength. But Algonquin was calling me. I channeled the fearless independence of my younger self and called Dad. “If we shorten the route and I find a lightweight canoe, the girls and I are coming,” I told him. With guidance from YouTube and my sister, I mastered the technique of lifting the canoe onto my shoulders and on the day, I unloaded it without a hitch. The trip was serene. I was reunited with the beauty of Algonquin — the majestic red pines, serene lakes, and the sense of peace that comes with being in the wilderness. This journey felt like a pilgrimage (朝圣), reconnecting me with my adventurous younger self who isn’t extinct, just out of practice.24. What contributed to my taking part in a family trip again?A. Ignorance of the call of Algonquin. B. Being caught up in the busyness of life.C. My children getting older and louder. D. Confidence in family and support from them.25. Which of the following was the author confident of?A. Managing the first part of the trip. B. Steering canoe in small and calm lakes.C. Carrying the canoe by herself. D. Lifting the canoe onto her shoulders.26. What kind of person can we learn about the author?A. Independent and humorous. B. Pessimistic and unmotivated.C. Nature-loving and adventurous. D. Ambitious and self-confident.27. What message is mainly conveyed in the text?A. It’s never too late for a woman to take a risk.B. Your family is there for you whatever happens.C. You should find and stick to what you are good at.D. Reunion with nature brings back one’s real self.CThis fall is the first in nearly 20 years that I am not returning to the classroom. For most of my career, I taught writing to university students. I quit, in large part, because of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT.Virtually all experienced scholars know that writing, as historian Lynn Hunt has argued, “is not the text of thoughts already consciously present in (the writer’s) mind.” Rather, writing is a process closely tied to thinking. Writing is hard work. It is sometimes frightening. In my most recent job, I taught academic writing to doctoral students at a technical college. My graduate students, many of whom were computer scientists, understood the mechanisms of generative AI better than I do. They recognized LLMs as unreliable research tools that invent citations (引用). They knew that models are trained on existing data and therefore cannot produce novel research. However, that knowledge did not stop my students from relying heavily on generative AI. I warned them of other possible risks. It did not matter. The students still used it.Students who outsource their writing to AI lose an opportunity to think more deeply about their research. In a recent article on art and generative AI, author Ted Chiang put it this way: “ Using ChatGPT to complete assignments is like bringing a forklift (叉车) into the weight room, you will never improve your cognitive fitness that way.” As a result, I found myself spending many hours grading writing that I knew was generated by AI and more time giving feedback to AI than to my students. So I quit. The best educators will adapt to AI. In some ways, the changes will be positive. Teachers must move away from mechanical activities or assigning simple summaries. They will find ways to encourage students to think critically and learn that writing is a way of generating ideas, revealing contradictions, and clarifying methodologies. However, those lessons require that students be willing to sit with the temporary discomfort of not knowing. Students must learn to move forward with faith in their own cognitive abilities as they write and revise their way into clarity. With few exceptions, my students were not willing to enter those uncomfortable spaces or remain there long enough to discover the power of writing.28. Which statement would Lynn Hunt probably agree with?A. Writing might involve the development of ideas.B. Thoughts should be explored with consciousness.C. Writing demands a lot of hard work and devotion.D. Writers may change their thoughts after consideration.29. Why did the author’s students depend on AI to write?A. Because writing was beyond their abilities.B. Because they didn’t realize its downsides. C. Because AI could create innovative ideas. D. Because they disliked the unease of writing.30. Why did Ted Chiang mention the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?A. To explain the cause of students’ overuse of ChatGPT to complete their assignments.B. To analyze how ChatGPT fails to help the students to complete their assignments.C. To encourage people to develop their intellectual ability by doing their own writing.D. To point out the reason why a forklift does not help improve students’ cognitive fitness.31. What is the tone of the author throughout the text?A. Frustrated but optimistic. B. Disappointed but objective.C. Critical but sympathetic. D. Angry but reflective.DAs global energy demands continue to rise, scientists are increasingly focusing on sustainable energy generation to address the urgent challenges posed by the unfolding climate crisis.“Humidity is a vast source of energy that, unlike solar and wind, is continuously available,” wrote Jun Yao, an assistant professor from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in a recent research report published in Advanced Materials. “However, the existing technologies for harvesting energy from air humidity are either not continuous or require unique materials, which has hindered their widespread application.”Yao and his team have therefore developed a device named “Air-gen” that continuously harvest electricity from moisture in the air through a newly proven mechanism that he says can be applied to any material. The device is made from a thin film containing many small holes called nanopores, tiny holes less than 100 nanometers — thinner than one-thousandth the width of a human hair. The top part is exposed to air, whereas the bottom is sealed. Water molecules (分子) in the air can move through these nanopores, from the top to the bottom. However, they often hit the surface of the pores. The top surface will be bumped into more frequently than the bottom. As the top has more contact with water molecule, electric charge (电荷) imbalance happens. In effect, it creates a device run like a battery — one that runs as long as there is any humidity in the air. “This is similar to that of a cloud building up charges before producing lightning,” added Yao. “Both utilize the movement and charge-carrying in air water molecules to build up a charge separation. That’s why, we may view it as a small-version ‘man-made cloud’.”Many scientists are impressed with the ideas behind the Air-gen. But some scientists have suggested that it might be hard for the Air-gen to create enough electricity to really make a difference — especially compared to power sources like solar energy. But Dr. Yao and his team are already working on ways to make Air-gen technology more powerful. They intend to try stacking the devices to produce more energy without taking up more space—like accommodating more people in a tall building. Dr. Yao says, “What I envision is that sometime in the future, we can get clean electricity wherever we go.”32. What does Paragraph 4 focus on?A. Working principle. B. Working standard.C. Research approach. D. Research procedure.33. What can be inferred from the text?A. The team got the inspiration from cloud and lighting.B. Air-gen will be widely applied but not in a desert area.C. Electric charges are generated by Air-gen without power.D. The smaller the hole is, the greater the charge imbalance is.34. What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 7 mean?A. Maximizing the devices’ space. B. Laying the devices in a pile. C. Distributing the devices evenly. D. Building the devices horizontally.35. What is a suitable title for the text?A. Nanopores Unlocks New Possibilities B. Electricity Is Generated Out of Thin AirC. Humidity Serves as a New Sustainable Energy D. “Man-made Cloud” Reshapes Electronic Harvesting第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。How to Overcome Procrastination Procrastination is one of those things that even the most well-organized and punctual fall victim to at some point or another. So what can students and other people do to overcome procrastination?Deal with your fearFear is one factor that contributes to procrastination. This can involve a fear of failure, a fear of making mistakes, or even a fear of success. Psychologist Susan Krauss Whitbourne, suggests that challenging your faulty beliefs is important. 37 , and you can begin to overcome your procrastination habit. 38 You might feel worried, scared, or even hopeless when you look at the sheer amount of work involved. At this point, take individual items on your list and separate them into a series of steps. If you need to write a paper for class, what steps do you need to follow? If you are planning a big family event, what are the things you need to do and what supplies do you need to obtain?Eliminate distractionsIt’s hard to get any real work done when you keep turning your attention to what’s on television or you keep checking your friends’ Facebook status updates. 39 — such as music, television, and social networking sites — and use that time to focus all your attention on the task at hand. 40 . After all, if it was simple there wouldn’t be an estimated 80% to 95% of students engaging in procrastination on a regular basis. The urge to put things off can be strong, especially when there are so many things around us to provide fun and entertaining distractions. But by implementing these strategies, you might find that it is easier to get started on those important tasks.A. Make a to-do listB. Don’t give in to the urgeC. Breaking the procrastination habit isn’t easyD. Break projects down into more manageable partsE. Address the fear that is keeping you from getting startedF. Meanwhile, it costs as high as 300,000 yuan, or over 100,000 yuan when social security reimburses part of it. In Xiaowen’s case, it would mean 10 years of delivery when he just made approximately 100 yuan a day. Worse still, hearing-impaired, Xiaowen had several narrow escapes with death at the intersection on the roads because he couldn’t hear the horn of the cars behind him! He sighed with a heavy heart when customers complained about his inability to speak on the phone to inform them of the arrival of a delivery. Even so, Xiaowen kindly refused people’s fat tips but accepted their apologies when they found out about his disability. Born in an ordinary family, Xiaowen, the little chubby boy, was diagnosed with congenital hearing impairment. This was like a bolt from the blue, breaking the family’s beautiful vision of Xiaowen’s future. But it didn’t bring down Xiaowen’s mother. Fearing that Xiaowen couldn’t understand teachers’ instructions, she was always patiently there to help him with lip-reading and guide him to express himself bravely. Thanks to mom, Xiaowen has grown into a self-reliant adult who wouldn’t reap without sowing. One day, Xiaowen watched his mother singing and said with a lisp, “Mom, you must have the most beautiful voice in the world!” “Dear, how I wish you could hear mommy and sing with me...” Mom eyed Xiaowen with tender love, a trace of sorrow flashing over her face. It would be just a long, long time before they could pay that much money.Mr. B, a well-known blogger, is devoted to charity causes. He and his team happened to see Xiaowen’s posts and they followed him online and decided to help him. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Mr. B invited Xiaowen and his mom to his office and told them the good news. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________One month later, Xiaowen and his mom went to the hospital to try out the signal-receiving device. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
