    Inventr: Hrace Wells
    Year: 1844
What Happened: In its salad days, N₂O was strictly a party ty, since it made peple hwl like hyenas (土狼). But a friend f the dentist tk t much f the stuff at a laughing-gas stage shw and cut his leg. Hwever, the friend hadn’t realized he’d hurt himself. As a result, Nitrus xide became an early frm f anaesthesia.
    Saccharin
Inventrs: Cnstantin Fahlberg and Ira Remsen
    Year: 1879
What Happened: After spending the day studying cal tar (沥青) byprducts, Fahlberg left his Jhns Hpkins labratry and went t dinner. Smething he ate tasted particularly sweet, which he traced t a chemical cmpund he’d spilled n his hand. Best f all, it cntained n calrie. As a result, he cut Remsen and the university ut f millins f dllars when he secretly patented the breakthrugh discvery, saccharin.
    Silly Putty
    Inventr: James Wright
    Year: 1943
What Happened: During the war years, the General Electric engineer cmbined C6H18OSi2 and HBrO3 in an attempt t find a cheap alternative t rubber fr tank ftbard (脚踏板). It didn’t wrk. But the scientists had fun buncing and stretching the mix, when they weren’t using it t transfer cmics nt paper. Kids ended up having fun playing with the Silly Putty t.

When Chle Chng thinks back t her childhd, her six-year-ld self wuld never have dared t dream she wuld be where she is nw. This weekend the 16-year-ld will be cmpeting at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, as part f the F1 Academy supprt race.
Chle’s decisin t start racing came abut when she was as yung as five. She always wanted t g int a car, and that eventually happened when she begged and begged her parents, wh weren’t int racing, really. “We nce watched F1 tgether and that brught abut a passin fr sprt in me,” recalled Chle. Chle did think abut ging straight int the F1 big league, but her dad reminded her f the hard wrk needed alng the way. That’s hw she started in karting (卡丁车运动) n the track where Lewis Hamiltn, her her, began, as all champins d.
But mving frm karting t racing cars has been a massive adjustment. The frmer builds the rhythm and the vertaking while there’s just a whle different level f detail abut racing cars, which causes nt nly a lt mre analysis but mre cmmunicatins with the engineer and the team. Nevertheless, mre strategy is what Chle thinks the biggest adjustment fr her and prbably the hardest part that has taken the mst time.
At 16, Chle is t yung t legally drive n British rads but has been flying alng at 150mph in her F1 Academy car n the track this year. Chle’s aims fr the seasn were just t cmplete races, but after finishing sixth in her first race she created a really prgressive mment that will live with her frever. The race in Texas this weekend is the nly supprt race fr the F1 Academy, but that will change frm next year with the all-female junir categry hlding all its runds as supprt races fr it. Chle feels these types f mves in mtrsprt are a massive step frward fr wmen, especially in terms f
budgets, which, she thinks, is ne f the biggest challenges.
What caused Chle t start racing?
    A. Her father’s permissin.B. Her parents’ passin.
    C. Awakened desire in her.D. Lewis Hamiltn’s encuragement.
What is the mst difficult fr Chle frm karting t racing cars?
    A. Devting mst time.B. Navigating a strategy-centered shift.
    C. Being faster and mre rhythmic.D. Making analysis and cmmunicatins.
Which f the fllwing best describes Chle?
    A. Determined and devted.B. Generus and adventurus.
    C. Ecnmical and practical.D. Respnsible and agreeable.
What is Chle’s attitude twards wmen’s mtrsprt?
    A. Realistic.B. Pessimistic.C. Idealistic.D. Optimistic.

Hw des the brain represent sentences? This is ne f the fundamental questins in brain science, because sentences are an example f abstract structural knwledge that is nt directly bservable frm speech. While all sentences are made up f smaller building blcks, such as wrds and phrases, nt all cmbinatins f wrds r phrases lead t sentences.
Lise Meitner Grup Leader Andrea Martin already had a thery n hw the brain interprets linguistic structure, based n evidence frm cmputer simulatin. T further test this “time-based” mdel, Martin and clleagues set ut t investigate whether the brain respnds differently t sentences and phrases, and if this culd suggest hw the brain encdes abstract structure.
The researchers created sets f spken phrases (the red vase) and sentences (the vase is red), which were identical in duratin and number f syllables in Dutch, and highly similar in meaning. They als created pictures with bjects in five different clrs. Fifteen adult Dutch speakers participated in the experiment. Fr each spken stimulus (刺激), they were asked t perfrm ne f three tasks in randm rder. The first task was structure-related, as participants had t decide whether they had heard a phrase r a sentence by pushing a buttn. The secnd and third task were meaning-related, as participants had t decide whether the clr r bject f the spken stimulus matched the picture that fllwed.
As expected, the activatin patterns f neurns (神经细胞) in the brain were different fr phrases and sentences, in terms f bth timing and strength f neural cnnectins. “Our findings shw hw the brain separates speech int linguistic structure by using the timing and cnnectivity f neural firing patterns. These signals frm the brain prvide a fresh basis fr future research n hw ur brains create language”, says Martin. “In principle, the time-based methd culd be used fr machine learning systems that interface with spken language cmprehensin in rder t represent abstract structure, smething machine systems currently struggle with.”
Why is a questin raised in Paragraph 1?
T highlight the cmplexity f human brain.
T predict the evlutin trend f brain science.
T explain the structural knwledge in sentences.
T intrduce the research cnducted by Andrea Martin.
What des the underlined wrd “simulatin” mean in Paragraph 2?
    A. Input.B. Investigatin.C. Mdelling.D. Testing.
What is Paragraph 3 mainly abut?
    A. The setting f the research.B. The prcess f the research.
    C. The innvative aspects f the research.D. The scientific basis f the research.
What can be learned frm Martin’s cmments?
The research apprach can be further applied t AI.
The findings f the research need t be further identified.
Human brain perfrms much better than what cmputer struggles with.
The brain’s capacity fr interpreting sentences can be transferred t cmputer.
    D
In 1990, Gibsn and Bruce Sterling’s The Difference Engine imagined an alternative histry where cmputers were built a century earlier with gears ( 齿 轮 ), helping ppularize steampunk, a style f blending ld and new technlgies. Hw breathtaking when technlgy culd be cnstructed frm the past’s parts!
But what if the wrld truly wrked this way? Is digital perfectin t much trustwrthy? It might be better t see it nt as a glimpse int the future, but as a legacy frm the past, with all the prblems handed dwn. In January 2023, the grunding f U.S. planes caused delays and lsses when the utdated NOTAM system frm 1920 failed.
In a steampunk-inspired Dctr Wh episde, heres discver the engine f a spaceship is futuristic by appearance but a trtured, whale-like creature, driven like a hrse under the whip. Thse wh grw curius face scial pressure, punishment, and distractins t be kept ignrant. Steampunk tales revisit Victrian pwer structures f the authrities, where bsses prmise a bright future while hiding the suffering that fuels it. These elements prvke reflectin n tday’s wrld: Wh truly labrs behind the scenes? Are they living the bright future prmised t thers?
Steampunk machines, bth extrardinary and rmantic, ften stir up sadness as their parts wear ut, demanding cnstant attentin t functin. In Pushing Ice, researchers land n an alien spaceship, nly t be trapped as it accelerates int deep space. With n chice, they cnstruct a chain f gears t cntrl its energy, inspecting every gear daily; even a single malfunctin culd lead t death. Ultimately, it is humans—weak, imperfect, tending t aging machines—that sustain us.
This steampunk-like view f technlgy, blending ld and new, is particularly relevant tday, when mdern technlgies ften distract us frm their inner wrkings. Just as we receive instant Amazn rders, we may sn depend n AI, fcusing n results withut questining the prcess. The risks f this relatinship t technlgy are self-evident. Yet it’s nt s hard t adjust, imagining a frest f gears turning, wndering if they fit. It’s all less perfect than it seems.
What des the NOTAM system illustrate?
A prf f trustwrthy digital perfectin.
A perfect mix f ld and new technlgies.
A necessity f a breathtaking glimpse int future.
    A display f a future-like yet prblematic heritage.
What is typical f steampunk stries?
    A. They draw n Victrian sciety.B. They are starred by the cruel bsses.
    C. They are fueled by a prmising future.D. They think highly f behind-the-scene labrs.
Hw is the passage mainly develped?
    A. By presenting facts.B. By analyzing reasns.
    C. By listing examples.D. By fllwing time rder.
What is the best title f the passage?
    A. The Perfect Machine: A Victry FantasyB. Imperfect Prgress: A Steampunk Insight
    C. Unfailing r nt? Machines f TmrrwD. Perfect r nt? The Steampunk Revlutin
