A new frm f huse is ppping up alng the beaches f Suth Africa -tiny white beach nests (巢). They are just big enugh t fit a family f African penguins. Their unique selling pint: a safe and cl place fr penguins t breed (繁殖).
African penguins grw strng in the cld currents f the Suth Atlantic Ocean. But when they cme t land, their thick black cat absrbs the heat, and they desperately lk fr cver—bth fr themselves and their eggs.
Histrically, the penguins dug hles in layers f guan(海鸟粪层), but in the 1800s, traders started selling guan as fertilizer (肥料), leaving the penguins and their eggs increasingly expsed t hunters and the burning sun. This, cmbined with ther threats such as egg hunting, verfishing and climate change, has caused African penguin ppulatins t decline sharply. That’s why cnservatinists have cme t the rescue with the African Penguin Nest Prject (APNP), which aims t build artificial nests t give penguin parents a safe and shaded place t raise their babies.
Althugh guan 0trade gradually disappeared, recreating the layers isn’t easy. Seabird ppulatins have declined s much ver time, s there are simply nt enugh birds t recreate it, says Kevin Graham, directr f the prject.
Instead, the prject decided t build artificial nests. The design tk years t develp, as Graham and ther scientists clsely studied ld guan nests and wrked ut hw best t cpy “Mther Nature”. Getting the right temperature and humidity, the nests create an air cnditining effect. “The prject started t build the nests in 2018 and the nests have usage rates f at least 99%,” he explains.
Graham agrees that ppulatin recvery depends n mre than just giving African penguins a safe place t breed. It’s nt simply a case f “we give them a nest, the species is saved,” he says. “It’s a big part f it, but there has t be mre.”

Have yu ever seen yur cat r dg eating grass? They d s because it can help their digestin, and many wild species use natural substances t prevent and cntrl diseases. This is called “z pharmacgnsy” r, mre cmmnly, animal self-medicatin.
Scientists have discvered that tamarin mnkeys(绢毛猴) use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Frest, scientists fllwed several grups f them t cllect data. During ne f their daily studies, tamarin mnkeys were bserved rubbing their bdies n the trunk f a tree. At first, researchers thught that they were marking their territry, a cmmn behaviur in this species. Btanical experts 5later cnfirmed that the tree was a species f cabreuva (红檀香),v which is well knwn fr its medical prperties.
Researchers decided t place camera-traps in different sites at the ft f the tree t recrd future visits by tamarin mnkeys. The recrds surprisingly shwed that many animals living in the frest visited it. Ttally, ten species were bserved. Fr many f them, it was the first time that behavirs similar t self-medicatin had been bserved. Mre surprisingly, ne species spread resin n each ther’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed t specifically visit the tree t acquire the resin and seemingly benefit frm it, either healing their wunds r fighting back parasites (寄生虫).
While further studies are needed t identify the prperties f the resin and thus cnfirm that this is indeed self-medicatin, the use f it suggests that cabreuva represents a cmmn and universal drugstre fr the residents f the Brazilian Atlantic Frest. It is likely t be a valuable resurce helping the species t imprve their health.

Time and mney are life’s mst valuable resurces. One f the great laws f ecnmics is that time equals mney. The phrase “time is mney” is usually credited t Benjamin Franklin, wh used it in an essay (Advice t a Yung Tradesman.1748) 36 He encuraged peple t treat time like mney. Hwever, mst peple think abut time and mney in vastly different ways.
Time is ur mst scarce (稀缺) resurce. Pr r rich, we all have 24 hurs a day, 7 days a week. 37 In a wrld f scarcity, chsing ne thing means nt being able t d smething else.
38 Time is relatively scarce fr peple with higher incmes, partly because their time is mre valuable. S, t have lts f time, rich peple hire ther peple t d their husehld chres. Hwever, a nn-wrking persn may spend mre time n husehld chres.
Time cannt be stred. One f the reasns we give little thught abut hw we use ur limited resurces is that we cannt save time. Time mves n whether we chse t spend it r nt. 39 Hwever, when peple are made aware f their mrtality (生命的有限), they wnder if they did make the mst f their lives.
In sum, time is anything but free. As a nn-renewable resurce, time is quite expensive. 40 They d their best t think f their time as unlimited, and unlimited gds have little value. Knwing that time is limited encurages us t ask hw we are using ur time. D we want t spend these precius mments n scial media r spend that time learning smething new? Skills and knwledge take time s the mre time yu spend n them, the mre yu imprve.
    A. It cannt be bught at any price.
    B. It means time is a valuable resurce.
    C. The value f time varies frm persn t persn.
    D. Sme peple fail t realize that time is scarce
    E. Thus, each f us faces the chice f hw t spend ur time.
    F. Yu can’t bttle time and exchange it fr an bject r event.
    G. Actually, time and mney are greatly different frm each ther.
