At the beginning f the schl year, each student wuld be given a special jb fr which they wuld be respnsible (负责任的) fr the whle term. Rita, a quiet and hardwrking girl, hped fr an exciting task, like taking care f the class plants. Instead, she received a small bx with sand and a small ant.
Even thugh the teacher explained that this task was very special, Rita culd nt help feeling disappinted. Hwever, she decided t d her best with her new jb. She began t study and care fr the ant, learning abut its habitat (栖息地) and needs. She made the bx a cmfrtable hme fr the ant, and it grew much bigger than anyne expected.
Rita’s effrts caught the attentin f her science teacher, Mr. Thmpsn. He turned her wrk int a class prject, and Rita became the class expert n ants. Her hard wrk helped the whle class learn abut ant behavir and habitats. They even built a small ant farm in the classrm t bserve the ant clsely.
Gradually, Rita’s classmates became mre and mre interested in the ant prject. They started asking her questins and bserving the ant’s behavir themselves. Rita rganized a presentatin where she shared her findings with the whle schl during the science fair.
At the end f the year, Rita’s class was recgnized as the best f the year. Rita was as well praised fr her hard wrk and hw she turned a small task int smething big. Rita learned that every task, n matter hw small, culd make a big difference. She als learned that smetimes the mst unexpected things can lead t great success.

D yu speak a dialect (方言) in daily life? While many Chinese peple speak putnghua, sme lcal dialects are in danger f disappearing. T save them, the Chinese gvernment started the Chinese Language Resurces Prtectin Prject (中国语言资源保护工程) a few years ag.
This prject lks at hw peple talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almst gne. It has helped China t build the largest language resurce library in the wrld. There’s an nline library where peple can learn dialects frm ver 5.6 millin audi clips and ver 5 millin vides.
Why is it imprtant t prtect the dialect culture? Accrding t Harld Palmer, a wrld expert n language, “Dialects are a key t stre lcal cultures. Language clearly shws the histry and beliefs f an area,” he said.
Schlar Zhang Hngming talked abut his cncerns abut the disappearing f dialects.“Fr abut ver 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhu, children aged 6 t 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Yung peple abve 15 years ld smetimes speak it, but nt very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear,” he said.
S hw did China make this big library?“A big natinal effrt has been put int the prject t make it happen,” said Ca Zhiyun, an expert n the prject. “Over five years, mre than 350 universities and research grups jined in, alng with ver 4,500 experts and mre than 6,000 dialect speakers.”
The prject is nw entering int its secnd part. This includes creating digital (数字化的) tls like apps and mbile dictinaries t help peple learn dialects.
