Catherine Sevcenk spends her spare time taking in and rescuing injured birds in Alexandria. And there’s smething cnstant in the past 12 years: Each crw(乌鸦)that appears at her dr is cvered in shiny black feathers.
Sevcenk culd hardly believe it when a rare crw she named Hpe shwed up last mnth. “I’d never seen a white crw befre,” said Sevcenk, wh runs Diva Crws rehab center with the gal f freeing the birds back int the wild.
The Wildlife Rescue League f Falls Church, Va. , cntacted Sevcenk and asked if she culd take in a rare white crw that had been brught in by a man last mnth. The man had rescued the bird in Manassas, Va. after he saw a grup f adult crws attack the rare bird. The juvenile crw hadn’t develped enugh strength in her wings t fly away. The bird was nly a few mnths ld and was a little underweight, but didn’t appear t have any injuries.
“I tld them, ‘Of curse, I’ll take the bird,’” said Sevcenk, wh has spent her spare time helping birds in need since 2012.With help frm vlunteers, she estimates that Diva Crws has rescued mre than 2.000 birds. In 2023, Sevcenk tk in a tw-ft-tall bird that had been sht with a gun. Althugh the bird culd n lnger fly and culdn’t be freed t the wild after he had been cured, she fund a hme fr him at the Cayuga Nature Center in Ithaca, N. Y.
Sevcenk and her vlunteers briefly put Hpe in a cage with sme rescued yung black crws and there weren’t any issues. Then they put Hpe in with an adult crw. Things did nt g well.

Fr three hurs a day ver 14 days, the scientists pened the pathway. The bumblebees never had t leave the pathway t find fd, but they left anyway. They weren’t s interested in the side where the balls culdn’t mve, but they made lts f visits t the side with the rlling balls.
Grabbing the balls with their legs, the bumblebees wuld beat their wings t pull n the balls, causing them t rll. The 45 marked bumblebees did this 910 times during the experiment. Thugh sme nly did it nce, thers did it a lt. The scientists fund the yunger bumblebees spent mre time rlling balls, and that males seemed mre likely t play than females.
