(2020.山东烟台高一下检测) Plants cannt run r hide, s they need ther strategies t avid being eaten. Sme curl up their leaves, and thers prduce chemicals t make themselves taste bad if they sense animals drling n them, chewing them up r laying eggs n them—all signals f an attack. New research nw shws sme flra can feel a plant-eating animal well befre it launches an attack, letting a plant prepare a preemptive (先发制人的) defense that even wrks against ther pest species.
When eclgist Jhn Orrck f the University f Wiscnsin-Madisn sprayed snail slime—a liquid the animals release as they slide alng—nt sil, nearby tmat plants appeared t ntice. They increased their levels f an enzyme (酶), which is knwn t prevent plant-eating animals. “Nne f the plants were ever actually attacked,” Orrck says. “We just gave them cues that suggested an attack was cming, and that was enugh t cause big changes in their chemistry.”
Initially Orrck fund this defense wrked against snails; in the latest study, his team measured the slimy warning’s impact n anther ptential threat. The investigatrs fund that hungry caterpillars (毛虫) , which usually eat tmat leaves
greedily, had n appetite fr them after the plants were expsed t snail slime and activated their chemical resistance. This nnspecific defense may be a strategy that benefits the plants by further imprving their verall pssibilities f survival, says
Orrck, wh reprted the results with his clleagues in March in Oeclgia.
The finding that a snail’s apprach can cause a plant respnse that affects a different animal made Richard Karban curius, a plant cmmunicatins expert, wh was nt invlved in the study. “It is significant that the plants are respnding befre being damaged and that these cues are having such far-ranging effects,” Karban says. The research was cmprehensive, he adds, but he wnders hw the tmat plants
felt chemicals in snail slime that never actually tuched them.
“That’s the millin-dllar questin,” Orrck says. He hpes future research will make ut the mechanisms that enable plants t sense these relatively distant cues.
4. Jhn Orrck sprayed a liquid nt sil near tmat plants t ________.
A. make them grw better
B. give them a warning
C. keep plant-eating animals away
D. infrm plant-eating animals f danger

(2020.黑龙江哈尔滨高一下测试)The different parts f a health-care system have different fcuses. A hspital’s strke (中风)unit mnitrs bld flw in the brain. The cardiac unit is interested in that same flw,but thrugh and frm the heart. Each cllectin f equipment and data is effective in its wn field. Thus, like the stry f blind men feeling an elephant, mdern health care ffers many separate pictures f a patient, but rarely a useful united ne.
On tp f alt this, the instruments that dctrs use t mnitr health are ften expensive, as is the training required t use them. That cmbined cst is t high fr the medical system t scan regularly, fr early signs f illness, s patients are at risk f heart disease r a strke.
An unusual research prject called AlzEye, run by Mrfields Eye Hspital in Lndn, in cperatin with University Cllege, Lndn (UCL), may change this. It is attempting t use the eye as a windw thrugh which signals abut the health f ther rgans culd be discvered. The dctrs in charge f it, Siegfried Wagner and Pearse Keane, are studying Mrfields’ database f eye scans, which ffers a detailed picture f the health f the retina (视网膜).
The prject will g a step further: With the infrmatin abut ther aspects f patients’ health cllected frm ther hspitals arund England , dctrs will be able t lk fr mre accurate signs f disease thrugh eye scans.
The Mrfields data set has lts f linked cases t wrk with—far mre than any similar prject. Fr instance, the UK Bibank,ne f the wrld’s leading cllectins f medical data abut individual peple, cntains 631 cases f a “majr cardiac adverse event”. The Mrfields data cntain abut 12, 000 such. The Bibank has data n abut 1, 500 strke patients. Mrfields has 11, 900. Fr the disease n which the Mrfields prject will fcus t start with dementia, the data set hlds 15, 100 cases. The nly cmparable study has 86.
Wagner and Keane are searching fr patterns in the eye that shw the emergence f disease elsewhere in the bdy. If such patterns culd be recgnized reliably, the ptential impact wuld be huge.
8. Why des the authr mentin “the stry f blind men feeling an elephant” in Paragraph 1?
A. T claim the ineffectiveness f ur health care system.
B. T tell the similarity in varius health care units.
C. T explain the limitatin f mdern health care.
D. T shw the cmplexity f patients’ pictures.
9. What des the underlined wrd “this” in Paragraph 3 refer t?
A. The challenge f making advanced medical instruments.
B. The high risk f getting a heart disease r a strke.
C. The incnvenience f mdern health care service.
D. The incmplete and expensive health mnitring.
10. Hw des AlzEye wrk?
A. By thrughly examining ne’s bdy rgans.
B. By identifying ne’s state f health thrugh eye scans.
C. By helping dctrs discver ne’s diseases f the eye.
D. By cmparing the eye-scan data frm different hspitals.
11. What can be inferred abut the Mrfields’ prject frm Paragraph 5?
A. It takes advantage f abundantly available medical data.
B. It makes the cllectin f medical data mre cnvenient.
C. It imprves the Mrfields’ cmpetitiveness in the medical field.
D. It strengthens data sharing between the Mrfields and the Bibank.

(2020.江苏南通高一下检测)Australian magpies can understand what ther birds are saying t each ther, a new study has fund.
The research, published in the jurnal Animal Behaviur, says the magpie has learned the meanings f different nisy miner calls and essentially eavesdrps (偷听) t find ut which predatrs (捕食者) are near. Nisy miners—a small, native hneyeater—have different warning calls fr grund-based and aerial (空中的) predatrs. By playing bth kinds f recrdings t a series f wild magpies, researchers bserved the magpies raising their beaks (喙)t the sky, r drpping their heads t the grund.
Researchers attracted the magpies with cheese, then played the nisy miner calls, videtaping the results.
As a cntrl, they als rlled a large range ball twards the magpies t see hw they rdinarily tilted (倾斜) their beaks t grund threats, and threw the ball t see hw they reacted t aerial threats.
The researchers recrded an average maximum beak angle f 29 degrees fr the thrwn ball, and an average maximum f nine degrees when it was rlled.
The miners’ aerial warning caused an average maximum beak angle f 31 degrees, and the grund warming caused an average maximum f 24.
One f the study’s authrs, Dminique Ptvin, said the magpies shwed an astnishing level f insight.
Magpies and miners bradly face the same types f predatrs and the tw frequently live in the same ecsystem. Ptvin said this had encuraged the magpies’ learned behaviur.
“Magpies are generally fund n the grund and nisy miners are generally fund up in trees. It pays fr the magpie t pay attentin t smebdy wh has a better view f predatrs than they d.”
She said it was unclear whether ther birds culd d the same, but it was highly likely ther magpies arund Australia already did.
“Magpies are a pretty smart grup. We’re nt sure if they’re learning this frm ther magpies r if they’re figuring it ut n their wn, but the ability is there.”
As part f the experiment, researchers als played a third call: a cmmn, nn-warning call frm a crimsn rsella. They fund the magpies did nt respnd.
Ptvin said that we had been actively explring animal cgnitin (认知) research.“It’s a gd piece f the puzzle,” Ptvin said. “Lking at the scial relatinships between species that live in cmmunities.”
12. What have the researchers fund abut Australian magpies?
A. They can understand ther bird calls.
B. They can cmmunicate with nisy miners.
C. They have a special preference fr cheese.
D. They have the ability t warn the predatrs.
13. Hw did the researchers get their findings?
A. By calculating the beak angles f aerial and grund predatrs.
B. By cmparing the magpie’s and the nisy miner's respnses t threats.
C. By mnitring the magpie’s respnses t the nisy miner’s warning calls.
D. By recrding the magpie’s luder scream fr ther birds’ attentin.
14. The magpies’ cgnitin can help them ________.
A. have a better view f the predatrs than the nisy miners
B. better prtect themselves frm the ptential threats
C. cperate with ther birds t drive away the predatrs
D. live in harmny with ther birds in the same ecsystem
15. We can learn frm the passage that ________.
A. the magpies are smart learners f ther birds’ behaviur
B. It’s likely that ther birds have develped the same ability
C. the findings have clarified the relatinships between species
D. a lt mre remains t be explred abut animal cgnitin

42.if/whether考查名词性从句。句意:他看了我们一眼,也许是想察看我们是否打算偷他的午餐。根据空前的see,并结合句意可知,此处应用if/whether“是否”引导宾语从句,作及物动词see的宾语。
