Wildlife experts agree that the decline in bird ppulatins is largely driven by habitat lss.
The gvernment passed the Envirnment Act int law in 2021, which requires a halt in species decline by 2030. Campaigners have said that radical changes t gvernment plicy are needed if it is t meet its targets. The prblems were highlighted by the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this year, in which huse sparrws remained the mst frequently bserved species in gardens fr the 20th year in a rw.
“The numbers speak fr themselves when it cmes t the astnishing declines f sme f ur nce cmmn birds,” said Beccy Speight, the RSPB’s chief executive. “We are in a nature and climate emergency and we’ve lst 38 millin birds frm ur skies in the past 50 years. “This year, mre than 500,000 peple tk part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, and mre than 9 millin birds were sptted. Scientists have fund that flating slar panels culd prvide a huge amunt f electricity if they were placed n lakes and ther bdies f water arund the wrld. Flating slar panels culd als help save water and prtect land.
Slar panels — als knwn as “phtvltaic” panels — are used t turn sunlight int electricity. Mst slar panels are placed n land in large cllectins called slar farms. But recently peple have begun t explre putting flating slar panels n water. Because these panels flat, sme peple call them “flatvltaies (浮动光伏)”.
The researchers behind the new study lked at 114,555 reservirs (水库) wrldwide. They used cmputer prgrams t figure ut hw much electricity culd be prduced yearly by cvering 30% f these reservirs with flating slar panels. The answer was surprisingly large — mre than twice the amunt f energy the United States generates in a year. And 10 times as much energy as all the slar pwer currently being generated in the wrld. The researchers described the results as “remarkable”.
The scientists fund that flatvltaies wuld be especially useful when reservirs were near smaller cities (50,000 peple r less). The researchers say there are abut 6,256 cities arund the wrld where flating slar panels culd prvide all the electricity the cities need.
Flatvltaies can als help save water by limiting evapratin (蒸发) frm reservirs. The scientists say that slar panels cvering just 30% f the reservirs’ surfaces culd save as much water as 300 millin peple wuld use in a year. There are several ther reasns that make flatvltaies a gd idea. Phtvltaic panels wrk better when they’re nt extremely ht. The water helps cl the panels s that they create mre energy. Putting slar panels n water als means that there’s n need t clear land fr a slar farm. That’s mre and mre imprtant as cuntries wrk t fight climate change and prtect natural spaces fr wild animals.

D.In large cities far frm reservirs with mre than 50,000 peple.

31.What’s the best title fr the text?

Few peple dubt the value f develping students' thinking skills. A fcus n critical thinking is cmmn in educatin. In the Australian Curriculum, critical thinking and creative thinking are knwn as “general capabilities”. The US has a similar fcus thrugh their “cmmn cre”.

This type f argument-based intellectual engagement can shw high utcmes in terms f the quality f thinking in any classrm. Research als shws deliberate attentin t the practice f reasning in the cntext f ur everyday lives can be significantly imprved thrugh targeted teaching.
Teachers at ne high schl in Australia, wh have much training in critical thinking teaching methds, develped a task that asked students t determine Australia's greatest sprts persn. Students needed t cnstruct their wn criteria fr greatness. T d s, they had t analyze the Australian sprting cntext, create pssible evaluative standards, explain and justify why sme standards wuld be mre acceptable than thers and apply these t their candidates. They then needed t argue their case with their classmates t develp criteria that were slid, defensible, widely applicable and prduced a chice that seized significant and relevant aspects f Australian sprt.
Researchers lking at the gains made in a single term f teaching critical thinking with argument mapping said the critical thinking gains measured are clse t thse that culd be expected t result frm three years f undergraduate educatin. Students wh are taught t think well als d better n subject-based exams and standardized tests than thse wh d nt.
In terms f develping 21st century skills, which includes setting up students fr lifelng learning, teaching critical thinking shuld be cre business.
