Facial expressins carry meaning that is determined by situatins and relatinships.Fr example,in American culture the smile is in general an expressin f pleasure.Yet it als has ther uses.A wman's smile at a plice fficer des nt carry the same meaning as the smile she gives t a yung child.A smile may shw lve r pliteness. It can als hide true feelings. It ften causes cnfusin (困惑)acrss cultures.Fr example, many peple in Russia cnsider smiling at strangers in public t be unusual and even imprper.Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (althugh this is less cmmn in big cities).Sme Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrng places;sme Americans believe that Russians dn't smile enugh. In Sutheast Asian culture,a smile is frequently used t cver painful feelings.Vietnamese peple may tell a sad stry but end the stry with a smile.
