Have yu ever jyusly stepped ut t yur backyard garden nly t find yur well-cared- fr plants withered and dying? Was the sil t dry? Did pests find their way in? During times like these, sme frustrated gardeners may wish their plants wuld just tell them what they need. A new Micrsft-partnered prject in the UK is trying t see if that cncept can be demnstrated in the real wrld.
Next year, at the Chelsea Flwer Shw, the Ryal Hrticultural Sciety in England will shw ff an“intelligent garden” that uses an AI mdel t mnitr the garden's envirnment and infrm gardeners when it needs care. Visitrs can ask the AI-pwered garden questins. The mdel culd then respnd with phrases like“I need a bit mre water,” r“I culd use a haircut” depending n data captured in the sil. Aside frm the pleasant nvelty f chatting with plants, the garden will prvide visitrs with a physical representatin f the many ways AI technlgies culd be used t enhance sustainability effrts.
The Intelligent garden will rely n a netwrk f sensrs nestled thrughut the garden measuring envirnmental factrs like sil misture and nutrient levels as well as wind and rainfall. All f that data is then sent t a specially designed AI mdel. The mdel, pwered by Micrsft's Azure Open AI Service, can then analyze thse factrs and infrm gardeners n feeding, watering, r trimming.
Onsite plant caretakers aren't the nly nes wh can interact with the garden. Visitrs t the shw can als walk up t virtual platfrms and ask the intelligent garden questins abut its current envirnmental state. The AI language mdule will then interpret the data and respnd t the visitrs in a cnversatinal dialgue.
In thery, insights prvided by mdels like this culd help gardeners allcate resurces efficiently and avid ver-watering plants befre rainfall, bth f which can ai d in sustainability effrts. Thse tls culd bring cnvenience t casual grwers r businesses lking t reduce csts. It's unclear, hwever, whether even the best mdels can prvide the same level f care as experienced gardeners.
    28. What's the pssible effect f the intelligent garden prject?
    A. It' ll increase the prfits fr gardening industry.
    B. It' ll replace human gardeners with AI technlgy.
    C. It' ll prmte sustainable develpment f gardening.
    D. It' ll create an attractin at the Chelsea Flwer Shw.
    29. Hw des the intelligent garden knw what plants need?
    A. Via dialgues with gardeners.
    B. Thrugh cmputers in the garden.
    C. By analyzing data frm the sensrs.
    D. By examining plants fr signs f pests.
    30. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
    A. The AI mdel will be widely used.
    B. The AI mdel helps save resurces.
    C. The AI mdel can frecast the weather.
    D. The AI mdel makes gardeners unnecessary.
    31. What is the text mainly abut?

The abdminal cerebrum thery(肠脑理论) is a cncept that suggests the gut (肠) has a cmplex netwrk f neurns capable f independent actin and decisin-making, which is called the“secnd brain”. This thery stresses the imprtance f the enteric (肠道的) nervus system (ENS), which is respnsible fr cntrlling digestin, but recent research suggests it may play a larger rle in verall health and well-being.
The ENS cnsists f ver 100 millin neurns. These neurns cmmunicate with each ther and with the central nervus system (CNS), allwing fr bth lcal reflexes and crdinatin with the CNS.
One f the mst cnvincing aspects f the abdminal cerebrum thery is the ENS's ability t functin autnmusly. While it receives input frm the CNS, it can perate independently, regulating prcesses such as bld flw and gut mvement. This nature demnstrates its resemblance t a“secnd brain”.
The gut-brain axis is a bidirectinal cmmunicatin netwrk linking the ENS and the CNS. This interactin ges beynd mere signaling; it invlves neurtransmitters like sertnin(90% f which is prduced in the gut) and dpamine. These chemicals influence md, anxiety, and even cgnitin, suggesting that gut health directly impacts mental health.
Emerging research indicates that cnditins like tiredness, and even depressin and anxiety are linked t an imbalance in the gut micrbita (肠道菌群). The ENS als plays a crucial rle in diseases such as besity and diabetes.
Despite its appeal, the abdminal cerebrum thery faces several criticisms. Sme argue that while the thery acknwledges the ENS is cmplex, labeling it as a“secnd brain” may versimplify r mislead. Others pint ut that mre research is needed t fully understand its precise rle in varius health cnditins.
Mrever, translating basic research int clinical applicatins remains challenging. The interplay between genetics, lifestyle factrs, and envirnmental influences cmplicates effrts t develp targeted therapies based n the thery.
    32. Why is the gut ften called the“secnd brain”?
    A. Because it cntains millins f neurns.
    B. Because it can functin independently.
    C. Because it cntrls all bdy functins.
    D. Because it impacts verall well-being.
    33. Which f the fllwing is amng the functins f the ENS?
    A. Cntrlling the peratin f the CNS.
    B. Disturbing the perfrmance f the CNS.
    C. Regulating digestin and gut mvement.
    D. Crdinating bld flw and muscle mvement.
    34. Accrding t paragraph 4, what can be learnt abut neurtransmitters?
    A. They are mstly prduced in the brain.
    B. They impact bth md and cgnitin.
    C. They are nt imprtant fr gut health.
    D. They nly affect ur physical health.
    35. Why is the thery criticized?
    A. Because it has n prspects f clinic applicatins.
    B. Because it denies the cmplexity f the ENS.
    C. Because it may cause misunderstanding.
    D. Because it hasn't been studied s far.

Cnversatins are like tw-way streets: we take turns speaking and listening. While we ften fcus n what we say, there's smething prfundly psitive in the act f listening. 36 But here's where it gets tricky: being a gd listener isn't easy. It can be emtinally draining, especially in tugh cnversatins.
My clleagues and I recently explred the dwnsides f listening in a study with schl

Why des this happen? Fr teachers, listening isn't just abut hearing wrds. 37 This can be incredibly draining, especially when teachers feel respnsible fr slving prblems they may nt have the resurces r time t address.
This isn't just a prblem fr teachers, it affects all f us. Whether we' re parents, partners, friends, r clleagues, we all find urselves in situatins where we have t listen t thers’ wrries and stresses. And withut realizing it, we absrb that emtinal weight. 38 In a wrld where we' re cnstantly cnnected, we need t be aware f the emtinal csts f listening.
39 First, fcus n listening withut planning yur respnse. This keeps yu present and allws the speaker t feel truly heard. Secnd, understand that smetimes listening is enugh; dn't feel yu have t fix the prblem. 40 Finally, dn't always feel like yu have t reflect. When smene is sharing a deeply negative experience, like the lss f lved nes, reflecting thse emtins back t them may nly deepen their pain.
Ultimately, while listening is ne f the mst pwerful tls we have fr cnnectin, it's imprtant t knw when t fully engage and when t take a step back t prtect ur wn well- being.
    A. S, hw can we listen withut burning ut?
    B. Hw can we fix their prblems while listening?
    C. Often, listening, even withut taking actin, is healing.
    D. Over time, this emtinal burden can wear us dwn, leading t burnut.
    E. It invlves absrbing their students’ emtinal challenges and struggles.
    F. As is ften the case, attentive listening brings unintended bad cnsequences.
    G. It can build trust, strengthen bnds, and expand ur understanding f the wrld.

Last year, as my then-9-year-ld sn, Lepld, and I were preparing fr a mm-sn ski trip t Keystne, I came up with a rule: we wuld say yes t everything. Yu see, Lepld is a picky eater— he lives n chicken nuggets and ygurt— and can be hesitant t try new things.
    I was hping t find a way t encurage him withut resrting t wrn-ut saying like“If yu
dn't try it, yu' ll never knw if yu like it.” S I brrwed the idea f a Yes Day, smething ur family has dne a handful f times since watching the mvie f the same name. Befre the trip, Lepld and I agreed we wuld say yes t everything, including fd and experiences— especially new nes.
We started saying yes befre we even barded ur flight, when we stpped at a breakfast buffet at the airprt. Fr me, that meant I sampled a vegan meatball, while Lepld tried a muse bite f hash brwns he said lked“funny”.
After we gt settled at ur htel, I tk Lepld t meet his skiing instructr. While he was ding his skiing practice, I skied by myself. On the first day, I played it safe and stuck t the lng and winding easy green run. On the secnd day, I challenged myself t ski an intermediate blue run. There was a part steeper than I had thught, but I did my slw, diligentS-turns and I made it dwn in ne piece.
Lepld had taken a few lessns back at hme in Cnnecticut but had never had the pprtunity t ski n a muntain f this size. My hpe was that he wuld make the mst f this pprtunity. S I encuraged him t ride a chairlift(吊椅式缆车) t the tp and then ski dwn. Lepld's anxiety was evident as we std at the base f the muntain. His eyes widened at the sight f the chairlift, and he clutched my hand tightly.
