There may be n ____1____ (great) prf t a sciety’s creativity and visin than Egypt’s pyramids f Giza, but the pyramids are nly part f ancient Egypt’s heritage. Many f the devices f their sciety are still cmmnplace. Here are tw f their amazing inventins.
Eye Makeup
Sure, eye makeup might nt rank alngside fire r the wheel ___2___ ne f the mst imprtant discveries in human histry, but it gives the Egyptians a run fr lngevity. ____3____ they first invented eye makeup as far back as 4000 B.C., it has never gne ut f style. Even mre impressive, sme csmetically-minded cultures still create makeup, using the same techniques _____4_____ (riginate) in Egypt thusands f years ag. They cmbined st (煤烟) with a mineral ______5______ (create) a black mixture, which is still ppular tday.
Fr the Egyptians, makeup was nt limited t wmen. Status and appearance went hand in hand, and as far as the upper class____6____ (cncern), the mre makeup, the better. Fashin was nly part f the reasn fr the Egyptians’ heavy hand when applying eyeliner. Develping an riginal and creative idea requires that tw cmpletely different netwrks in the brain wrk at the same time: the assciative netwrk alngside the mre “cnservative (保守的)” netwrk, accrding t new research ___11___ at the University f Haifa.
The researchers ___12___ that “creative thinking apparently requires ‘checks and balances’.” Accrding t the researchers, creativity is ur ability t think in new ways t slve prblems. But nt every riginal slutin is cnsidered a creative ne. If the idea is nt fully applicable, it is nt cnsidered creative, but simply ne which is ___13___.
The researchers assumed that fr a creative idea t be prduced, the brain must ___14___ a number f different and perhaps even cntradictry (矛盾的) netwrks. In the first part f the research, respndents were given half a minute t cme up with a new, riginal and unexpected idea fr the use f different bjects. Answers prvided with lw frequency received a high scre fr riginality, while thse given ___15___ received a lw scre. In the secnd part, respndents were asked t give, within half a minute, their best characteristic ___16___ f the bjects. During the tests, all subjects were scanned using an FMRI device t examine their brain activity while prviding the answer.
The researchers fund ___17___ brain activity in an “assciative” regin amng participants whse riginality was high. This regin, which includes the medial brain areas, mainly wrks in the backgrund when a persn is nt cncentrating, similar t daydreaming.
But the researchers fund that this regin did nt perate alne when an riginal answer was given. Fr the answer t be riginal, an additinal regin wrked in cperatin with the assciative regin — the administrative cntrl regin, a mre “cnservative” regin related t scial nrms and rules. The researchers als fund that the strnger the ___18___, the better these regins wrk tgether in parallel, the greater the level f riginality f the answer.
“On the ne hand, there is surely a need fr a regin that prduces innvative ideas, but n the ther hand, there is als the need fr ne that will knw t ___19___ hw applicable and reasnable these ideas are. The ability f the brain t perate these tw regins in parallel is what results in creativity. It is pssible that the mst ___20___ creatins f humanity were prduced by peple wh had an especially strng cnnectin between the tw regins,” the researchers cncluded.

Finally, many recent graduates say that ne f the biggest difficulties they face is adapting t ___29___ n the jb. In the wrkplace, emplyees must regularly ____30____ with thers and are ften dependent n their c-wrkers fr their success. In ther wrds, if an emplyee has t wrk with thers t cmplete a given prject, that emplyee’s ____31____ nt nly depends n his hard wrk and expertise, but als n hw well his clleagues perfrm. Knwing hw t participate effectively in teamwrk — and deal with prblems when they arise — is extremely imprtant, and yet, it is als smething many students dn’t get quite ____32____ t in a schl setting.
Hw can we better prepare yung adults fr the wrkplace? Recent graduates, lking back n their educatinal experience, have sme ____33____. Many think that all students shuld be required t d an internship (实习) while they are in schl. Vlunteering part time at a cmpany, hspital, r gvernment rganizatin, fr example, can help ne gain experience and learn skills needed t succeed in the real wrld. ____34____ this kind f practical wrk experience with classrm instructin, say the graduates, will help prepare students fr the ____35____ f the wrkplace and make the transitin frm schl t career wrld less stressful.

Wmen are still underrepresented in tp academic psitins. One f the pssible explanatins fr this is the increasing imprtance f btaining research funding. Wmen are ften less successful in this than men. Psychlgy researchers Dr. Rmy van der Lee and prfessr Nami Ellemers investigated whether this difference als ccurs at the Netherlands Organisatin fr Scientific Research (NWO) and examined ptential explanatins.
The researchers were assigned by NWO t carry ut this study as part f the brader evaluatin f NWO’s prcedures and its gender diversity plicy. The aim was t gain mre insight int the causes f the differences in awarding rates fr male and female applicants fr research funding. The analysis addressed an imprtant “talent prgramme” f NWO, the Veni grant. “Whever receives this grant has a greater chance f btaining an imprtant appintment at a university, ” says Nami Ellemers.
Van der Lee and Ellemers investigated all the applicatins submitted by male and female researchers ver a perid f three years: a ttal f 2823 applicatins. Under the directin f NWO these applicatins were assessed by scientific cmmittees cnsisting f men and wmen. The results demnstrate that the awarding rates fr female applicants (14.9%) are systematically lwer than thse fr male applicants (17.7%). “If we cmpare the prprtin f wmen amng the applicants with the prprtin f wmen amng thse awarded funding, we see a lss f 4%,” said Ellemers.
The study reveals that wmen are less psitively evaluated fr their qualities as researcher than men are, “Interestingly the research prpsals f wmen and men are evaluated equally psitively. In ther wrds, the reviewers see n difference in the quality f the prpsals that men and wmen submit,” says Rmy van der Lee.
In search fr a pssible cause fr the differences in awarding rates and evaluatins, the researchers als investigated the language use in the instructins and frms used t assess the quality f applicatins. This clearly revealed the ccurrence f gendered language. The wrds that are used t indicate quality are frequently wrds that were established in previus research as referring mainly t the male gender steretype (such as challenging and excellent). Rmy van der Lee explains: “As a result, it appears that men mre easily satisfy the assessment criteria, because these better fit the characteristics sterety-pically assciated with men.”
In respnse t the results f this research, NWO will devte mre attentin t the gender awareness f reviewers in its methds and prcedures. It will als be investigated which changes t the assessment prcedures and criteria can mst strngly cntribute t mre equal chances fr men and wmen t btain research funding. This will include an examinatin f the language used by NWO. NWO chair Js Engelens said, “The research has yielded valuable results and insights. Based n the recmmendatins made by the researchers we will therefre fcus in the cming perid n the develpment f evidence-based measures t reduce the difference in awarding rates.”
43. Van der Lee and Ellemers carried ut the research t find ut whether _________.
A. wmen are less successful than men in tp academic psitins
B. female applicants are at a disadvantage in getting research funding
C. NOW’s prcedures and gender diversity plicy enhance fair play
D. there are equal chances fr men and wmen t be admitted t a university
44. Van der Lee and Ellemers’ study shws that _________.
A. grant receivers were mre likely t get appintments at universities
B. men applicants fr research funding utnumbered wmen applicants
C. the research prpsals f wmen are equally treated with thse f men
D. the reviewers have narrw, prejudiced cnceptins f wmen candidates
45 What might be the main cause fr the differences in awarding rates and evaluatins?
A. The wrds used in the instructins and frms.
B. The reviewers’ preference t applicatins.
C. The methds and prcedures fr evaluatin.
D. The vague and unclear assessment criteria.
46. What will NWO prbably d next in respnse t the results f this research?
A. Eliminate pssibilities fr difference in awarding rates.
B. Design a language examinatin fr all the reviewers.
C. Emphasize the imprtance f gender awareness.
D. Imprve the assessment prcedures and criteria.

Teaching Is “One f the Least Ppular Jbs in the UK”
The UK gvernment has just published a reprt n the future f secndary schl teaching, and the cnclusin f the reprt is that many secndary schls nw face great difficulties in finding peple wh want t be teachers. Since the 1980s, the number f graduates wh wuld “seriusly cnsider” teaching as a career has fallen sharply, frm 64% in 1982 t just 17% tday. The reprt suggests that urgent actin needs t be taken in rder t encurage mre intelligent yung graduates int teaching.
The main drawback (缺点) f secndary teaching, accrding t the reprt, is the lw salary.
Earnings in teaching are much lwer than in many ther jbs. Janne Manners, 24, is a gd example: “I graduated in maths last year, and I was thinking f ding a teacher-training curse t becme a maths teacher---but I saw I culd earn twice as much if I wrked in marketing r advertising, s I decided nt t becme a teacher.”
It’s nt just abut the mney, hwever. The survey cncluded that anther reasn why peple dn’t want t be teachers is that sme teenagers behave very badly in schl. A lt f schls have prblems with discipline, and it seems clear that children d nt have the same respect fr teachers as in the past. Here’s the view f Dave Hallam, an accuntant frm Lndn: “I think parents are t blame. They shuld have stricter rules with their children at hme and als teach their children t have mre respect fr teachers.”
The reprt is clear that the prblem f teacher shrtage is a very serius ne. It says that the gvernment shuld raise teachers’ pay significantly, t catch up with wrkers in ther prfessins. It als indicates that the gvernment culd launch a natinwide publicity campaign, with sme advertisements n TV and in the newspapers, t shw the psitive sides f teaching t yung peple.
