My interest in bdy language began with a prfessr f mine at university. He mentined “Pincchi” t me ne cld mrning after saying that I always rubbed my nse when giving excuses fr being late t his curses. Actually, when smene tells a lie, the persn’s bld rushes t the nse and the extra bld makes it itchy (发痒的). This little example f nn-verbal cmmunicatin inspired me t becme a bdy language expert. Nw, I earn my living by training peple in nn-verbal cmmunicatin. Knwing when smene is lying and knwing hw t persuade peple are tw f the mst imprtant skills yu’ll ever learn.
I have spent a lt f time studying the ways the human bdy gives and they prvide mre reliable infrmatin than the wrds we speak. The wrds say ne thing but the bdy may say smething cmpletely different. We knw that crssed arms can be seen as either defensive r aggressive (攻击性的), but what abut facial expressins, pstures and gestures? All f these say a lt and can nly be understd if yu knw hw t make sense f the signs.
Business cmpanies always need my services and I try t imprve their cnfidence by teaching them abut bdy language. I give advice abut handshakes, which shuld always be firm and steady, and I teach the imprtance f persnal space. They may seem like small matters, but these cdes f behaviur can be the key t making r breaking a business deal.
My wrking life gives me a great deal f satisfactin. I feel that I’m prviding a public service, but it is a service that has had its dwnside. Whenever I meet smene new and I tell them what I d fr a living, they immediately put their guard up and they’re n lnger relaxed. They quite literally freeze in the attempt t hide all the signals that they think I’m reading. It makes life difficult at times, but I cnsider it a small price t pay fr a jb I enjy s much.

Eating a plant-based diet has been shwn t be very gd fr yur heart and yur verall health. Any benefit went away when researchers factred in lifestyle factrs such as physical activity, educatinal level, smking, drinking, fruit intake, red and prcessed meat cnsumptin, and use f mineral and vitamin supplements.
“Instead, ur analyses shw that the seemingly prtective effect f vegetable intake against CVD risk is very likely t be influenced by differences in sciecnmic situatin and lifestyle,” Feng said.
Dn’t start celebrating yet, veggie haters. Experts in the UK and United States quickly tk exceptin t the study’s cnclusin.
“Althugh this study fund that eating mre vegetables wasn’t assciated with a lwer risk f heart and circulatry diseases nce ther lifestyle and ther factrs were taken int accunt, that desn’t mean we shuld stp eating vegetables,” said Victria Taylr, a senir dietitian at the British Heart Fundatin, in a statement.
“The results are nt surprising. Picking ut ne single cmpnent and assuming just adding it t the diet, e.g., vegetables, is nt likely t result in the desired effect,” Alice Lichtenstein, directr and senir scientist at Tufts University’s Cardivascular Nutritin Labratry, tld CNN in an email.

Tday’s Olympic Games are a technlgical marvel. Slw-mtin cameras capture the millisecnds-lng difference between first and secnd place. Wearable sensrs detect clean hits in fencing r tae kwn d.
Technlgy and sprt are tightly linked, but cntrversy and debate arise when technlgy enhances athletic perfrmance, smetimes called “technlgical dping (兴奋剂).” This refers t using functinal clthing r equipment t gain an unfair advantage.
Unlike drug dping, mnitred by an internatinal agency, legal clthing and equipment are decided by each sprt’s rganizers. It’s up t these rganizers t put in place technical requirements fr equipment use in their sprt and enfrce these requirements. But there’s n standardized rules acrss sprts t disqualify an item based n its degree f enhancement, cst r exclusivity (排他性). Cnsequently, decisins t ban an item frm cmpetitin are ften made retractively.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 94% f swimming gld medals were wn by athletes wearing the Speed LZR Racer swimsuit, engineered t reduce drag. It was wrn by athletes wh set 23 new wrld recrds. Many labeled it technlgical dping, s Wrld Aquatics later banned full-bdy swimsuits frm cmpetitins.
Similarly, in running race, Nike’s tailred she fr Eliud Kipchge, helped him achieve a sub-tw-hur marathn in 2019. Its cmmercial versin, Nike Vaprfly, led t numerus lng-distance wrld recrds. These super shes feature energy-returning midsle fam, a curved rigid plate, and a shape that rlls a runner frward, imprving running ecnmy by 4% n average. Other brands have since released super shes, but sme research suggests they dn’t match Nike Vaprflys in perfrmance. Differences in access t the best equipment have lng been a surce f inequality in sprt, wrsened by technlgical dping, where brand exclusivity and high csts limit access.
Andy Miah, a prfessr at the University f Salfrd, believes this technlgical race is natural in sprt. “Resisting technlgy in athletics may be fruitless, as athletes’ perfrmances are a cmbinatin f bilgical capability and technlgical training.” Miah says, “In fact, being a genius athlete is a very unnatural way f life — but that desn’t make it bad.”
37. What des the underlined wrd “retractively” in the third paragraph mst likely mean?
A. Afterwards.B. Ineffectively.
C. Ahead.D. Temprarily.
38. What can we learn abut the Speed LZR Racer swimsuit in the passage?
A. It was allwed in all swimming cmpetitins after 2008.
B. It was designed t reduce drag frce and imprve perfrmance.
C. It was banned befre any Olympic recrds were brken.
D. Its fabric played the mst significant rle in the drag reductin.
39. Hw des Andy Miah seem t feel abut the integratin f technlgy in sprts?
A. Skeptical.B. Supprtive.
C Indifferent.D. Cncerned.
40. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. A New Way t Make Mney r Create Fairness?
B. Dping: Helping r Harming Our Athletes?
C. High Tech in Sprts: Prmting r Cheating?
