The wrd “emji” cmes frm Japanese, literally meaning “picture character”. Emji s are small symbls representing ideas, emtins r feelings. When first intrduced in Japan in 1999, emjis were limited t 176 simple designs. Nw there are mre than 3, 000 emjis that expand upn the way in which we cmmunicate.
It seems that emjis have clear advantages ver written language. Peple like them because they add emtinal meaning, and are quick and easy t use. With a smiling r sad face added t a message r pst, yur reader can “see” yur facial expressin while reading yur wrds. Emjis can als help peple express their feelings when they cannt find the apprpriate wrds. Fr instance, if yur friend is mving acrss the cuntry, yu may just send them a string f crying faces t express yur sadness ver yur separatin.
The use f emjis has even spread t classical literature. A Shakespeare series fr yung readers has taken William Shakespeare’s ppular plays and replaced sme wrds with textspeak and emjis. The intentin f these adaptatins is t make the classics mre accessible t yung readers. Sme peple, hwever, believe that these new versins have taken away the heart and sul f Shakespeare’s plays.
As we can see, emjis have a tendency t pp up all ver the place. Users f emjis say that they facilitate the way in which we cmmunicate and express urselves. But this makes thers, especially educatrs, wrry that we are lsing the ability t cmmunicate prperly using the written wrd, r even the spken wrd. Perhaps peple will ne day chse t cmmunicate in pictures, and frget hw t write prperly. On that day, emjis will have becme a real pictrial “language”. But, fr nw, maybe it’s best that we just enjy using them.
    4. What is an advantage f emji accrding t the text?
    A. It is cnvenient t write dwn.B. It has an emtinal tuch.
    C. It makes message-reading harder.D. It can help repair friendship.
    5. What is the authr’s purpse in mentining Shakespeare?
    A. T shw the widespread applicatin f emjis.B. T give a brief accunt f emjis’ functins.
    C. T recmmend the adaptatins f classics.D. T hnr the famus English playwriter.
    6. What des the underlined part “pp up” in paragraph 4 refer t?
    A. BreakB. Lack.C. Appear.D. Die.
    7. What is the writer’s attitude twards the current use f emjis?

Bstn wants t be smarter. The city has taken advantage f technlgies t becme mre respnsive t its residents’ needs. But technlgy alne is nt sufficient t make tday’s cities liveable. Bstn has discvered that it als needs t reach the ld-fashined lw-tech cmmunity and integrate that technlgy with city life.
Kris Carter rlled ut Bstn’s smart city prgram in 2014. It started with an app that residents culd dwnlad t reprt lcatins where sidewalks needed repair. The city srted ut thse reprts and ranked them in a database, which repair crews used t priritize their wrk.
The system wrked beautifully, except fr ne prblem: mst f the alerts (警报) came frm wealthier neighbrhds, where the cncentratin f smartphne-equipped residents was highest. “The cmplaints frm the app didn’t always crrelate with the greatest cmmunity need fr repairs,” explains Carter.
Carter’s grup has mved away frm the mdel cmmn t many smart city initiatives f letting tech-savvy (精通技术的) residents drive the prcess. Instead, they run meetings t find ut what prblems peple in different neighbrhds care abut slving. When it came t sidewalks, Bstn intrduced a secnd methd f cllecting repair tips, hiring peple t get ut and walk the city’s 1, 700 miles f sidewalks t take ntes n their cnditin.
Whether using lw-tech r high-tech appraches, says Carter, t stay smart, a city needs t cntinually reassess its ptins t spt pprtunities t imprve residents’ lives. Take the sidewalk repair prgram, walking n the streets was prved a useful, if inefficient way t priritiz repair needs. But last year the grup fund that walkers’ mbile phnes culd be tracked as they mved alng the streets, and that data culd be analyzed t identify side walk rutes which are mst ften used by neighbrhds.
“Cmbined with ur ther sidewalk infrmatin, that gave us an even better way t predict where faster repairs wuld d the mst gd,” says Carter. “We’re really always lking fr whatever mix f appraches best slves the prblem. ”
    8. Hw did Kris Carter carry ut the smart city prgram?
    A. By writing reprts n sidewalk lcatins.B. By prcessing reprts cllected frm an app.
    C. By presenting data n sidewalk usage.D. By cmparing data frm different databases.
    9. What prblem did Kris Carter’s team meet when carrying ut their prgram?
    A. They faced many technical prblems. B. They were nt supprted by residents.
    C. They culdn’t serve all residents well. D. They were annyed by being shrt-staffed.
    10. Which f the fllwing might Kris Carter mst agree with?
    A. Maximizing the benefits f technlgy.B. Mixing appraches fr slving prblems.
    C. Having greater cnfidence in the residents.D. Letting tech cmpanies be a leading rle.
    11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. A smart city: mre than just techB. A city with intelligent facilities
    C. Jint-effrt in city cnstructinD. The mdernizatin f a city

Japanese scientists have created ne f the wrld’s mst unusual spacecraft, the Lignst prbe—a tiny satellite made f timber (木材). In experiments carried ut n the Internatinal Space Statin(ISS), it was fund particularly stable and resistant t cracking. Nw plans are being finalized t launch it n a US rcket this summer.
The timber satellite has been built t see if they can act as envirnmentally friendly alternatives t the metals frm which all satellites are currently cnstructed.
“All the satellite s reentering the Earth’s atmsphere burn and create harmful particles, which will flat in the upper atmsphere fr years, ” Taka Di, a Japanese astrnaut and aerspace engineer, warned recently. “Eventually, it will affect the envirnment f the Earth. ”
T tackle the prblem, Kyt researchers set up a prject t evaluate types f wd t determine hw well they culd withstand (抵抗) the severe cnditins f space launch and lengthy flights in rbit rund the Earth. The first tests were cnducted in labratries that recreated cnditins in space, and wd samples were fund t have suffered n measurable changes in mass r signs f decmpsitin r damage. “Wd’s ability t withstand these cnditins astnished us, ” said Kji Murata, head f the prject. After these tests, samples were sent t the ISS, where they were subjected t expsure trials fr almst a year befre being brught back t Earth. Again, they shwed little signs f damage, a phenmenn that Murata attributed t the fact that there is neither xygen in space which culd cause wd t burn, nr living creatures t cause it t rt.
“One f the missins f the satellite is t measure the defrmatin f the wden structure in space. Wd is durable (耐用的) and stable (稳定的) in ne directin but may be easy t have dimensinal changes and cracking in the ther directin,” he said.
It is expected that the prbe will perate in space fr at least six mnths befre being allwed t enter the upper atmsphere. If it perfrms well during its peratin in rbit, then the dr culd be pened fr the use f wd as cnstructin material fr mre satellites.
    12. Why is timber used in the spacecraft?
    A. Timber prvides a distinct appearance.B. Timber is cst-effective cmpared t metals.
    C. Timber is an ec-friendly replacement f metals.D. Timber maintains better structural perfrmance.
    13. What can be learned frm the prject in paragraph 4?
    A. The prject aimed at wd’s space-enduring qualities.
    B. The prject targeted wd’s cst-minimizing ptential.
    C. The prject cncentrated n wd’s weight - maintaining aspects.
    D. The prject examined wd’s creature-withstanding features.
    14. What is the disadvantage f timber accrding t Murata?
    A. It is subject t dimensinal instability.
    B. It’s structure is unreliable in space.
    C. It changes shape under extreme temperatures.
    D. It’s durability is affected by micrgravity cnditins.
    15. What is the main idea f the last paragraph?
    A. The Lignst prbe is expected t last fr at least six mnths in space befre reentry.
    B. The Lignst prbe’s missin is t check hw well wd hlds up in space.
    C. The Lignst prbe will help decide if wd can be used t build mre satellites in the future.
    D. The Lignst prbe’s success culd lead t using mre metal when making satellites.
