Last summer at a bkstre, my sn Henry was fascinated by the cver f the first nvel frm Peter Brwn’s middle-grade trilgy (三部曲). He then finished it in just tw days. “Dad, why did The Wild Rbt have t be s sad?” He tearfully asked me.
The stry is set n a remte island, where a rbt named Rz learns t survive and cmmunicate with the island's creatures, and becmes part f the cmmunity. Fr my sn, it was the first bk he discvered n his wn; the first t impact him with the mix f tragedy (悲剧)and jy.
When I finished the bk, I knew why Henry lved it. In ur bk club discussin, he described hw Brwn’s pictures and wrds had made the stry feel real. When talking abut its final scenes, where Rz leaves t find repairs fr her injured bdy, Henry cried again. His previus reading experiences had cheerful, “happily-ever-after” endings, but this bk intrduced him t the beauty f cmplex emtins. I tried t explain hw sadness can enhance the meaning f happy mments, but failed t fully persuade him.
Once ur discussin ended, Henry requested t buy The Wild Rbt Escapes and instantly fell in lve with it. He read the first tw bks repeatedly, s yu can imagine his excitement when we finally gt a cpy f The Wild Rbt Prtects.
We bth agree it is wrth the wait. Rz leaves the island again t stp an underwater threat: “the pisn tide.” Brwn expertly balances between breathtaking adventure and unsettling ideas-nt just happiness and sadness, but als, given the climate-change undercurrents (暗流), hpe and despair.
And, here’s smething special abut Rz: her physical clumsiness (笨拙)and cnfusin abut life, cnveyed thrugh her expressive eyes and dwnturned muth. Her stry reflects the challenges f surviving in a strange place, much like a child’s jurney. Readers lve Rz. They learn frm her. Even better, they learn alngside her. Rz gave Henry the pwer t push thrugh the first bk’s sad parts, getting him ready t appreciate that, smetimes, sadness isn’t a bad thing t feel.
    4. What drve the authr t read The Wild Rbt?
    A. Its attractive cver.B. Henry’s tearful recmmendatin.
    C. Its tragic ending.D. Henry’s emtinal reactin t it.
    5. What is ne theme f The Wild Rbt Prtects?
    A. Family and sciety.B. Explratin f the cean.
    C. Cncerns ver glbal issues.D. Man-rbt relatinship.
    6. What makes Rz in the trilgy special?
    A. Her childlike expressins.B. Her struggling experiences.
    C. Her rbtic pwer.D. Her adventurus spirit.
    7. Which message des this text seem t cmmunicate?
    A. Misfrtune inspires great literary wrks.B. Rbt stries wrk like magic n children.
    C. Bk discussins help kids survive tragedies.D. Reading literature facilitates persnal grwth.

The missin is simple. Arrive n freign sil, fit in and wait. Then, when the time is right, emerge frm the shadws and take ver. This prcedure, familiar frm spy fictin as the preserve f sleeper agents, is als the strategy f certain invasive plant species.
Invasive species that stay put, knwn as sleeper species, are nt hard-wired t d s. Their natural tendency t expand is, instead, held back by sme external factr. With the climate rapidly changing, Bethany Bradley at the University f Massachusetts wndered whether alteratins in temperature and rainfall had the ptential t activate sme sleeper species. As she reprts in a paper in Bilgical Inuvasins, the answer is a definitive yes.
Dr Bradley and her team came t their cnclusins by studying 1,795 plant species in nrth-eastern America identifiable as freign but nt yet lcally listed as invasive. Of these, 169 were unquestinably demnstrating invasive behaviur in ther parts f the wrld, and causing damage t their envirnment. That suggested they had the capacity t cause similar damage in America t.
T determine whether the cnditins cming t the regin wuld activate any f the set 169, the researchers first identified the cnditins under which these species wuld thrive (旺盛). A number f the plants n their list were held back by the cld winters that are less and less cmmn in the regin. They als fund that sme ther species required mre rainfall than is typical.
Accrding t the team’s findings, climate change is n track t awaken 18 sleeper species that culd cause serius envirnmental and ecnmic prblems. Dr Bradley estimates that they will start t make themselves felt between 2040 and 2060 if smething is nt dne sn.
The mst practical curse f actin, in her view, is t seek these sleeper species ut befre they are able t spread. Remving them tday may be expensive, but it will be far cheaper than trying t weed them ut tmrrw.
    8. What strategy d sleeper species emply?
    A. Rapidly expanding in new envirnments.
    B. Patiently waiting fr human interventin.
    C. Remaining inactive until cnditins are favrable.

    B. Their invasive behavir in ther parts f the wrld.
    C. The reasns why they failed t survive in America.
    D. Pssible ways t make them less cmmn in America.
    11. What’s Dr Bradley’s suggestin fr dealing with sleeper species?
    A. Let nature take its curse.
    B. Preventin is better than cure.
    C. Cutting budgets is a tp pririty.
    D. Delay actin until it’s necessary.

Driverless taxicabs, almst certainly cming t a city near yu, have scared passengers in San Francisc, Phenix and Austin ver the past year. Sme dcumented their experiences n TikTk, like “startled by the empty frnt seats during a ride t a cffee shp” r “we’re making a left hand turn withut using a left hand”.

And back then, like nw, Mathieu adds, there were cncerns abut the future f certain jbs. Once we were wrried abut Teamsters, wh then drve teams f hrses, being ut f wrk. Truckers tday fear that they might sn cmpete with driverless vehicles in their wn dedicated lanes.
“Yu can’t have cngestin-free driving just because yu cnstantly build rads,” bserves histry prfessr Peter Nrtn f the University f Virginia. Nw, he says, is an excellent time t learn frm what has nt wrked in the past. “It desn’t autmatically get safe just because yu have state-f-the-art tech.”
Histrians say we need t stay behind the wheel when it cmes t driverless cars, even if that becmes nly a figure f speech.
    12. Why did pedestrians shut “Get a hrse” in the 1910s?
    A. They were ppsed t autmbiles.B. They had pity n the pr hrses.
    C. They tried t warn mtrists f danger.D. They wanted t wn a hrse themselves.
    13. What is a cncern abut the rise f driverless cars tday?
