In a new study, researchers used artificial intelligence(AI) t cnfirm that an app can identify pisn ivy(毒藤).
Pisn ivy ranks amng the mst medically prblematic plants. Up t 50 millin peple wrldwide suffer annually frm rashes(皮疹) caused by cntact with the plant, a climbing, wdy vine native t America and several areas in Asia.
It’s fund n farms, in wds, landscapes, fields, hiking trails, and ther pen spaces. S, if yu g t thse places, pisn ivy can lead t reactins that require medical attentin. Wrse, mst peple dn’t knw pisn ivy when they see it.
The new app culd help change that.
“We were the first t d this, and it was designed as a tl fr hikers r thers wrking utdrs,” says Nathan Byd, a prfessr at the UF/IFAS Gulf Cast Research and Educatin Center. “The app uses a camera t identify in real-time if pisn ivy is present and prvides yu with a measure f certainty fr the detectin. It als functins even if yu are nt cnnected with the internet.”
The next step is t make the app cmmercially available, and there’s n timetable fr that yet, Byd says.
Fr the study, researchers cllected thusands f images f pisn ivy frm five lcatins.
They labeled images, and in each image, scientists put bxes arund the leaves and stems(茎) f the plant. The bxed images were critical because pisn ivy has a unique leaf arrangement and shape. Scientists use thse characteristics t identify the plant.
They then ran the images thrugh AI prgrams and taught a cmputer t recgnize which plants are pisn ivy. They als included images f plants that are nt pisn ivy r plants that lk like pisn ivy t be certain the cmputer learns t distinguish them.
“We believe that by integrating an bject-detectin algrithm (算法), public health, and plant science, ur research can encurage and supprt further investigatins t understand pisn ivy distributin and minimize health cncerns,” Byd says.

The new study, based n surveys f mre than 2,300 adults in Switzerland, fund that feelings f lneliness were less cmmn in peple wh reprted a purpseful life, regardless f their age, but the study fund a slight increase in reprts f lneliness fr peple in their 70s and beynd, an age when a sense f purpse can be especially imprtant.
“We’ re trying t get rid f the wrng idea frm previus generatins that this is simply a time fr retiring and resting.” Hill says. “There are n dwnsides t finding smething meaningful later in life.”
Still, it’s imprtant t keep in mind that a search fr purpse can be smewhat self-defeating if taken t seriusly. “Feeling like yu need t save the wrld can lead t terrible fear and wrries in life,” Hill says.
