Cnfused by fd nutritin labels? Yu’re nt alne. Nw, researchers have suggested an alternative: labelling the amunt and type f exercise needed t burn ff the calries.
Current fd and drink labels display nutritinal infrmatin such as the amunt f calries and fat. Hwever researchers led by Prf. Amanda Daley at Lughbrugh University say that these labels are having a limited effect n changing buying habits. Instead, they prpse a labelling system called ‘physical activity calrie equivalent r expenditure’ (PACE) (体育活动热量当量), which shws hw many minutes r miles f physical activity are needed t burn ff the calries. Fr example, a small bar f milk chclate cntains 230 calries, which wuld take abut 42 minutes f walking, r 22 minutes f running, t burn ff.
They pled the data frm 14 previus studies which cmpared the impact f PACE labelling with that f ther types f fd labelling, r with n fd labelling at all. They calculated that PACE labelling culd cut a persn’s daily calrie intake by up t 200 calries. “Public health agencies may want t cnsider the pssibility f including plicies t prmte PACE fd labelling as a strategy that cntributes t the preventin and treatment f besity (肥胖) and related diseases,” said the researchers.
The UK’s Ryal Sciety fr Public Health has already called fr PACE labelling t replace the current system. Hwever, nt everyne is cnvinced. A spkespersn fr the eating disrder charity Beat said: “We believe that anti-besity campaigns that fcus n weight instead f health are ineffective and that recmmending mre exercise is an ineffective and ver-simplistic apprach t a cmplex prblem. Mst urgently, public health campaigns must cnsider peple’s mental as well as their physical health, mving frm besity-shaming t evidence-based campaigns that build cnfidence and supprt healthy eating.”
    8. What additinal infrmatin can yu get frm PACE labels cmpared with the current nes?
    A. Exercise adviceB. Fat cntent
    C. Nutritin factsD. Calrie cntent
    9. What des the underlined wrd “pl” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?

    B. Obesity is related t eating habits and can be tackled by cutting calries.
C Obesity is n simple prblem but can be settled by fcusing n weight.
    D. Obesity is cmplicated and shuld be tackled physically and mentally.

A team in Nrway recently cnducted in-depth research n writing by hand and typing n a keybard.
The team invited 36 university students wh had t either write r type wrds displayed n a screen. The study participants used a digital pen t write in cursive (草书) n a tuchscreen, and they used ne finger n a keybard t type. The researchers used a special cap with 256 sensrs. This cap was wrn by the students, and their brain activity was recrded fr five secnds each time they were asked t write r type.
“We shw that when writing by hand, brain cnnectivity patterns are far mre cmplex than when typewriting n a keybard,” says Prfessr Audrey van der Meer, the team leader. “Such widespread brain cnnectivity is knwn t be imprtant fr memry frmatin and fr encding (编码) new infrmatin and, therefre, is beneficial fr learning.” The researchers als nte that even thugh the participants used digital pens fr writing in the study, they believe the findings wuld be similar if the participants used an ink pen and paper.
“We’ve shwn that the differences in brain activity are related t the careful frming f the letters when writing by hand while making mre use f the senses. Since it’s the mvement f the fingers carried ut when frming letters that prmtes brain cnnectivity, writing in print als has similar benefits fr learning as cursive writing,” Audrey adds. “This als explains why children wh have learned t write and read n a tablet can have difficulty distinguishing between letters that are mirrr images f each ther, such as ‘b’ and ‘d’. They haven’t felt with their bdies what it feels like t prduce thse letters.”
Cnsidering handwritten nte-taking is becming less cmmn in educatinal settings, the researchers advcate fr mre pprtunities fr students t write by hand. “There’s sme evidence that students learn mre and remember better when taking handwritten lecture ntes, while using a cmputer with a keybard may be mre pragmatic when writing a lng text r essay,” Audrey cncludes.
    12. What was the special cap used t d?
    A. Measure the participants’ brain activity.B. Evaluate the participants’ writing styles.
    C. Tell the participants when t write r type.D. Recrd the time the participants used t write.
    13. What des paragraph 3 fcus n abut the study?
    A. Its backgrunds.B. Its equipment.
    C. Its utcmes.D. Its prcess.
    14. What plays the key rle in strengthening brain cnnectivity?
    A. Writing letters carefully by hand.B. Frming the habit f taking ntes.
    C. Recgnizing letters’ mirrr images.D. Learning t practice cursive writing.
    15. What is Audrey’s attitude twards handwritten nte-taking?
    A. CriticalB. TlerantC. AmbiguusD. Apprving
